I remember watching PC on Room 101 and I thought he handled the Oasis thing with good humor - he didn’t stick the knife in when he could have done. People forget that around the time that episode of Room 101 aired people had in general grown tired of Noel’s rants and Liam’s behavior. A backlash of sorts against Oasis was underway then. Both Noel and Liam have calmed down a lot since then. The Oasis split humbled them a bit and both N&L had to start their separate careers in the music business. They split up long enough to become legendary to younger generations who weren’t around for the average albums and average shows. What goes around comes around for everyone. Phil Collins was a world wide superstar who cracked the USA which Oasis never did. I’m not a fan of PC music, but he was an incredible drummer who worked with some incredible artists. PC “problem” was that he was so successful that a huge backlash was inevitable - and Noel spearheaded that, which he might find tiresome today. All this started 30 years ago! Cool video.

Agree with all of that. If Noel and Liam had only done this kind of thing against Collins once or twice and only him then I'd have maybe let it go, but they did this a lot to many artists. Don't get me wrong I love their music, was a fan from the start, but as people, they thought it was clever, and I think egged on by certain sections of the press and at the height of lad culture I just think they thought their behaviours was acceptable. Even as a fan of the music I thought they were massive knobs, which came a culmination in them disrespecting their fans by falling out and cancelling concerts on the night and tours at very short notice towards the end. I hope they've matured a bit now and the reunion tour goes well and we can get some more great songs.

I think Noel sort of missed the bit where he ceased to be the anti-establishment and became, well and truly, the establishment. Beyond that point, his bizarre compulsion to slag off the old guard, which some may have found vaguely charming when it was a cheeky upstart tilting at windmills, had lost any semblance of “punching up” and just looked like the weird and graceless bullying of elders that, in truth, it always was.

The best part is that Phil was out there touring in a transit van while the Gallaghers were still in their nappies! Years of living out of a suitcase & collecting green shield stamps were the rock n roll foundation of his later success. The Gallagher bros think they invented rock n roll, but sadly, they've only re-gurgitated 60's music & gave it a punk edge. Throw in a bit of Uk flag waving and it sells. The price of their re-union tickets signifies that they too have become over-bloated and out-of-touch, everything they once thought about PC. Whatever anyone thinks of Phil Collins solo singles, he was one of the top ten drummers in the world, no question.

@@JJPwfelli As much as I love the music of Oasis I always thought they were, well, a bunch of tw*ts, and that was in their heyday, not when they became a bit mediocre and not at all the music they did in the first two albums. I think it sums it all up that he said what he did about Phill Collins when stoned and it just stuck. He'd have more respect from me if he'd just kept quiet about that artists of the past, whether he liked them or not, but I guess him and Liam just thought they were being clever. I wish Noel and Liam the best for the future and do hope they can stick it out and actually their world reunion tour, it'll be a sign that they've matured if they can finish it without one of them walking out after a massive falling out and having to cancel the rest of the tour. I do suspect though that this won't just be plain sailing.

We all experience every emotion, including hate, psychopaths and occasionally sociopaths, excluded. It’s just who is honest and speaks in good faith about what, who or when they hate. Everyone else is a hypocrite and/or a certified member of the categories who can’t experience such emotion. So, by logical deduction, we can at least assume Noel Gallagher is not a psychopath, and probably not a sociopath. Thankfully, I’m not embarrassed to tell people who, what or when I hate. The Kardashian’s, marmite and the 1950’s, for some examples, amongst others.

Whereas the thing with Blur was obviously a concocted marketing ploy I don't think you can say this was the same. Noel didn't like Phil's music, which is fine, he's entitled to his own opinion, but it does seem he went on about it a bit too much, and the story about being in the bar in Mustique I think says it all. Just no need for it imo, just keep quiet. Maybe he was stoned every time he comments but just let it go. I did find it obnoxious how often they this, not just about Collins, but many artists. Love their music but as people not so much.

He also drummed for everybody during his time, the likes of Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Peter Gabriel, Led Zepplain etc. He was a go to guy and very trusted. I'm of the same generation as Noel, and I can relate to his ire toward whoever was topping the charts in the late 80's. Popular music had gotten so absolutely dreadful and listening to the radio was an exercise in torture. They were dark times for rock fans. Being North American, Bruce Springsteen was my Phil Collins. A symbol of everything I hated about radio. Then Appetite For Destruction came out, and the musical poles started to shift. I enjoy me some Phil, but hearing Another Day In Paradise as part of the rock-radio rotation in those days, made me want to un alive myself.

I'm totally with him on Sting - During Quadrophenia he said he thought Paul Weller was unoriginal and the whole mod revival was outaded - which is ironic coming from a man who forged a career making anodyne cod reggae. If Phil Collins hadn't been in Genesis I probably would feel an equal amount of disdain for him as Noel Gallagher, but my respect for Genesis and his drumming work in both that band and Brand X have made me give him an unconditional respect. For his solo music though, I am less enthusiastic, albeit liking a few of his solo songs. I don't think there's a single Phil Collins album that is actually considered a classic, despite the massive amount they may have sold. All in all, he was more of a singles' artist. Peter Gabriel, on the other hand, is a genius and should have been riding the wave of British music during the '80s instead of his old bandmate. But Gabriel was always a bit more slow coming up with new work and a bit more shy behaviourally. Collins seemed to come up with a new album either solo or with Genesis every year and selling tens of millions in the process, whereas Gabriel seemed to come up with an every couple of years and only selling a few millions each time. That is until So, where Gabriel finally reached the pop stratosphere for the first time, though it was destined to be his last time also, never quite reaching the level of media saturation and quasi-monopoly that Collins held during the '80s.

Not for nothing, during the height of britpop, I remember Phil Collins being interviewed by Howard Stern on his radio show/E! TV and him going off on Oasis. The only reason I remember this is I remember Phil being asked who he liked in music at the time and he said "There's this band called Dodgy who's like Oasis, but with good songs." Phil produced a cartload of music that was especially irritating at the time, but will always hold a place in my good graces for financing and promoting the reunion of one of the best bands of the sixties...The Action. He gave those guys one last swing at getting the original band back together and putting them in front of a loving audience. For that, I would pull him out of a burning building, but I wouldn't listen to his music while doing it.

Phil Collins was a proper front man to be fair, him and Rutherford were managers at Parr street studio where oasis recorded one of their albums, if you listen to the genesis albums then they were a great band, Phil made catchy hits but he also made ballads like against all odds and I wish it would rain down.

People can rant about Phil all they want. But why not pick up some sticks and play the whole of Suppers Ready or the Lamb. I'm sure Noel was just a publicity genius. Doing a bit of Johnny Rotten to an eager press in the 90's. It was all about celebrity gossip back then. Noel is way too intelligent to criticise Phil on technical ability. I just think he enjoyed getting a rise out of people. Made good copy.

I thought you were also going to mention that one thing Noel said at Wembley in 2000 during that famous disaster concert. "Hey, don't f--king knock Genesis. Any bald-headed drummer who looks like a tw@t who can sing, I'd love him live. I was talking about Phil Collins." Anyone remember that? He kind of sounded somewhat complimentary there...
