One of my absolute favourite games on the system. You need to listen to the townspeople though, cause otherwise it's gonna be like Simon's Quest. But in this game, the townspeople don't lie and you're not dealing with a terrible translation. I learnt a lot of English off this game, piecing together what I needed to do from all the hints =)

It's actually possible that the developers of this game stole at least some code from Zelda 2. Notably, there's an acceleration glitch present in Zelda 2 that lets you move at crazy speeds. That exact same glitch is present in Battle of Olympus.

Integrating multiplayer aspects into single player games, nontraditional storytelling largely based on level details and lore, a unique risk/reward bonfire save system, and losing something upon death that can be regained. This is a tough game but a great one. You do not play it like a Mario game. it is a game of advancement and using information and tools you gather. You cannot run right through it. It is a RPG. It does take time and patience. I have played it 3 times and it is rewarding to beat it. You are given save codes in all the temples and you will not lose anything you have gathered or won. Great early NES game.

It's actually my favorite NES game, awesome controls, awesome soundtrack, awesome theme, 80s hard but fair and NPCs give you useful hints. The only bad thing about it is that occassionally you have these grinding sessions for olives or salamander skins to go on. (Grinding olives btw is easiest done before the temple of Athena)

Loved this game, but it is hard. Extremely hard. It isn't unfair in terms of hardness. There is never a point where you are beaten by broken mechanics. Enemy movements are harder to predict than many of the other games of the era, but with enough practice you can reasonably predict how they will move. Spend enough time farming slimes and bats for olives and they become a breeze to predict.

There is a trick to the Hydra, just crouch in front of the bubbles and keep stabbing, he won't be able to even get out of the water, you'll always hit him. As for the shoes, you hold A as you walk to get on the ceiling, I always thought, and still do, that that was the coolest sh*t ever. As for things like the pits, and getting weapons, almost everything is being told to you by characters in the game.

My heart is bleeding when I see this. You don't stand and strike all the time when facing the hydra. There is also ambrosia which enlarges your health bar. NPC supported you with hints so you knew where to go. This is a though game, but also a good one. You just need to figure it out like Zelda 2.

Guys, this is a really straightforward game to beat. You just need to take a second to figure out the jumping controls and, above all, keep track of where you're going (counting doors can't be that hard). Hydra is easily beaten, you just have to keep a healthy distance and preferably kneel while striking. This is a great game once you get into the groove, but you have to work for it a little bit (not much actually). Nowadays most games hold your hand from the very beginning, so I get why you were struggling.

Only if you choose "continue" rather than "retry." "Retry" keeps your olives and starts you back at the last place you got a password. So you need to always get a password before setting out into challenging territory with your olives.

I always really liked Battle of Olympus. It just has a unique, cool atmosphere to it, and being set in Greco Roman myths is perfect for a game like this. Things like monsters, magical weapons, gods and demigods are all built right in. Also, why NOT make more action RPGs in the vein of Zelda 2? That game has plenty of flaws you could improve upon if nothing else. This specific style of action RPG is surprisingly rare, too. For instance, Wanderers from Ys is somehow the only sidescroller in that massive, long-running series (and the enhanced port(s?) of it aren't even available outside of Japan.)

I love The Battle of Olympus. There are little tricks you have to do to defeat each boss. It's still a very tough game, but it's a lot more fun once you get better weapons and upgrades. When you get used to the patterns to beat the bosses it's really not so bad. Also, talking to people is very very helpful in this game, unlike the useless townspeople in other games like Zelda 2 or Simon's Quest. This is a game I have to concentrate on though, because It's hard to play and talk to people at the same time. You have to get into the zone.

TIPS: Hold over to left or right while jumping to get off the trees or off ground to trees. Talk to any gods like Zeus to get a password except for the ones to tell you to leave. Kneel down and press B to talk to them multiple times for different Passwords.

You don't need the shield of athena to block her arrows, IIRC. You just need to be really fucking fast. After you hit her she gets knocked back, so reposition yourself quickly. You would had a heart attack during the later sequences of this game, particularly when you have to get the golden apple.
