The total area of the United Kingdom is 94,000 square miles its quite small in area but you can go a very short distance and it dramatically changes, food, accents, history. Like everywhere we have some lovely bits and some places that are not very nice. Brits in many ways have more in common with americans and canadians than mainland europe brits tend to think of americans as a bit loud but thats a bit unfair - brits dont say much until they know you then you have a friend for life first impressions for brits matter .. usually they will wait until they figure you out first. Most brits see americans as good allies and in trouble would turn to america - after maybe our older friends australia canada nz. England is odd small country but in terms of culture, science, music, books, indeed many things we seem to be able to produce many academic and cultural things that are exceptional considering how few people live here the universities and education has much to do with that with oxford for example the second oldest university in the world after bologna. On the other hand we have also produced some of the nastiest lunatics, some of the worst criminals in history - fortunately guns here are not normal which is just as well. UK if visiting London is like Manhattan it is not England - do your research, cotswolds, peak district, scottish highlands, lake district, northern wales - devon extremely beautiful - but every area has its bad bits - eg central london very safe but london is 70 miles across in all directions and the worst parts are grim. I have visited usa a few times liked ohio and NY and the coast .. england worth a trip what people miss is the history they often walk past places that are interesting but you wouldnt know unless you've read up a little. National Trust is good value for historic houses, parks, landscapes - guided tours in London are much better than wandering. Black taxis for 2 or 3 people are cheaper than buses. Food here has improved over the years - now you can find good food pubs, cafes, etc before it was just good or bad luck. Best way to see England is what is your interest - sports, heritage, history - you could spend a year in central london and still not really know it. In UK many things are free dates back to Queen Victoria - we even have free lists you can see shows, museums, guided walks, even eat free but you need the list - or unlimited budget historic small hotels, tiny theatres and nightclubs where you will see footballers or movie stars.

@@coffeebrown9371 we refer to London as a boiling pot of nationalities, the centre of London itself is basically new York it has the old building the mix of skyscrapers and is very very commercialised. The large majority of England is countryside with rolling hills small villages with small local pubs with fireplaces and home cooked meals. Outside of the tourist places in the other cities and even outside of Central London we have a lot of what we call council estates which are similar in a sense to what Americans refer to as the ghetto its full of working class people in government funded housing tends to be run down and theres quite high crime rates however they have some of the best sense of community spirit in the world.

The thing is, even non-posh English accents sound either more sophisticated, or at least more "pleasing" and nuanced and interesting to an American ear (than most American accents do). A Cockney, or northerner's accent is just as cool and fun to us as a posh one. And many of us don't recognize the different regional accents to begin with. The craziest thing I ever heard when I lived in the U.K. was, "you have such a lovely American accent, don't ever lose it." Me: Wut?

Thanks for watching it Martin. 22 years is a good chunk of time! I’d say you’ve got a pretty solid understanding of the USA. I would like to work and travel around the UK for at least a year to get a better feel of how things are there myself. @TheManMan international travel is educational. Like a long distance field trip. Obviously, the longer the better because just sticking to the tourist traps won’t teach you much. I’m an American, and I know for a fact, that if the majority of People, instead of spending soooooooooo much money in gadgets and frivolous things, would choose to travel to other continents, visit other countries and get to know their traditions, culture, food and drinks, (my favorite part of traveling), (it is really not that expensive to travel to other countries compared to what we spend here), maybe, and I say maybe, we could be waaaaaaaay better human beings, be more connected and respectful to each other, it’s a normal behavior for a human being, to be afraid and skeptical of what and who we don’t know, and we make assumptions without knowing, people, remember that knowledge is power, and if you are an American, please, please, don’t go to Europe to end up eating at a McDonald’s, that’s the worse way of wasting your hard earned money, be adventurous, improvise, don’t judge food and people for their looks, (you’ll be surprised of what you are missing), be courteous to others while traveling abroad, represent your country and values with pride, stand tall and smile, (remember that we all smile in the same language). For what is worth, I just wanted to throw that in the comments.

Most Americans don't have passports because they aren't needed to travel to Mexico or Canada. And US is pretty big so you could travel for years and still not see everything. Could be wrong but I think that's why a large portion of us aren't interested in other countries enough to learn much about them or travel to them. The cost has a lot to do with it also, take a mediocre vacation in Europe or Asia or take a really nice vacation in the US for half the cost.
