No other show has captured the stress of cooking and working in a kitchen better than this one. Sometimes I forget they're acting a pre-written script.

The restaurant nightmare was the part that really sold me on this show early on. I was in the industry for 17 years but have been out since 2013 and I still get the occasional "I'm stuck in the weeds while the shit is hitting the fan and everybody around me is yelling something different," nightmare. Also, every family run restaurant/tavern I've worked at had a Richie-type. That character is too real

The very first minutes alone tell us why Carmy is the way he is. When you're verbally abused into being the best, you feel like you can't afford to to be less than that.
@pabloc8808
@pabloc8808 Жыл бұрын
I really appreciate how they made it so despite the the New York kitchen being pristine and spacious, and despite Carmy not being weeded, it feels much more claustrophobic and frankly horrid to be in, whereas the Beef is cramped and dirty and the lighting is shit and Carmy is clearly in the shit but it still feels like you're breathing fresh air once the scene moves away from NYC and to the Beef

Richie let the crew think those were his cigs on the stove, causing the C rating. Another example of Richie taking the fall to protect the people he loves. Cuzzin is my fav character
@hellfish2309

Maybe, but I Richie really doesn’t like or respect himself, and as defensive and insecure as he is, I legit think he believes it was him Which is not to say it’s both: there’s clearly more broken with the restaurant than a hole in the wall or cigs on the cooktop, but Richie feels powerless to address it after having been unable to save Mikey

Ritchie really thought they were his cigarettes so he wasn't taking the fall. You don't have to create a perceived goodness. Ritchie is a great character just as he is. He's a real asshole, but you don't have to look far to see the depth of his character.
@ShelbyBaby27
@ShelbyBaby27 Жыл бұрын
@marthasharp4943 Do you think Richie didn't smoke for rest of the day? He didn't gather the crew together to say it wasn't him, he presumably wrote Carmy on the C rating in the window. The bachelor party brawl, Carmy should have also been locked up, but like the Jawbreaker fight Richie is jumping in for Carmy.

This is legit the only piece of cooking media that properly adapts, not just the feel on the line during a rush, but the *DREAMS* that all cooks have of being absolutely fuckin’ destroyed by that ticket printer. I’ve been out of the game for a couple years at this point, and sometimes that little fucker will still show up randomly in dreams, start printing orders for me, and I’ll listen to it. Like, I’m at a house party from high school, flirting with the one who got away, and the ticket printer shows up and starts spitting out drink orders! “Oh fuck, where they do they keep their schnapps in this fucking kitchen!? Fuck, another Highball?!”

Joel McHale (the New York chef) is based on Charlie Trotter (a notoriously verbally/mentally abusive chef who had a famous restaurant in Chicago). Grant Achatz (of Alinea (also in Chicago) worked for Trotter and almost gave up his life in the food industry for how miserable his experience was.

So glad you're watching this show James, it's absolutely phenomenal! My favorite moment this episode is with Ritchie in the car, talking to his family. You're completely right about the eyes, they composed that shot perfectly and the actor was extremely compelling, showing the pain the character is going through. It really turned me on Ritchie, you see how much love he has, and can understand that he's lashing out and railing against everything because his world is in freefall, and I think he's terrified. Excited the next episodes! Thanks James!

Mid 2000’s, I became a line cook for a busy hotel. I say ‘became’ because, originally, I was supposed to be a bellman! My boy hooking me up could only get me into the kitchen so, I took it. Never in my life have I been more on edge. I’ve worked with kids, I’ve worked in a steel mill and never have I been more stressed out. I learned to smoke a cigarette in 60 seconds! I only lasted 6 months and it’s a miracle I made it that long. The final straw was the head chef being called at home to come in because I had a dining room of 150 people waiting on food!…That was the second time that happened. It was a complete nightmare and watching The Bear and it’s accuracy brings it all rushing back but the show is so good it’s still worth the watch!

This show is a roooooooollercoaster. Holy shit. I worked as the head waiter at a small 50 seat restaurant. Allways worked alone during my lunch shifts. Remember the feeling of never ending orders and having to just not...stop...moving,cleaning, taking and managung new orders not too quickly not to fuck over my chef, while keeping my cool and "working" the guests and having to step in the kitchen all the time to finish up stuff, just me and the one chef for several hours This show captures that stress, adrenaline, joy and fear like no other. I sometimes miss those times, but dont know If i would be able to handle that shit no more...

I think the thing that sucked me into this show was how fast paced it was right at the jump. I feel like a lot of shows now try to make it a big slow burn and draw it out so much that it’s easy to get bored at the beginning. But this show just started out at a lightening speed and it worked so well. Because if you start out at that speed, you can continue at that speed but also slow it down once you have an audience who is invested in the characters already One of my favorite romcoms ever is When Harry Met Sally and it’s for the same reason. The humor is fast paced and it doesn’t let you breathe.
