Jami Ray Vintage The one funny thing I remember, is when he told me not to jump on the pile of insulation. I'm sure upon reflection, he was warning about the fiberglass in it. I helped him, along with my sister....to lay cinder blocks for the building he was building in front of our house. When he was laid off from work, he would sell and make bicycles in that building. I never had a new bike, but that never bothered me. I was just glad to have one.

So cute! We got our first chicks in February and a Craigslist coop for 20 bucks, which my husband hacked it to be a bigger size and built a run for me with some lumber and a beadboard panel. I just got finished painting it today because it's been raining nonstop since we moved them outside last month. Definitely coveting your windows. If you make the OSB on the floor a slide-out tray, then it's easier to change the straw, and you can still swap out the board whenever it gets beyond gross, which will be way sooner than you think.

Super cute coop! You actually could remove the second set of nest boxes, chickens need a certain amount of nest boxes...but they always end up using less then half. (They like to lay where other hens lay, so you will find most eggs in one or two boxes) This will give them more floor space to sleep. I raise Silkies so I’ve learned over the years a few little tips from my girls. I think I might copy your coop plans for my Showgirl Silkies (Naked Neck/Silkie breed).
@Sabrina-wn6ey4 жыл бұрын
We are building a chicken coop as well. So far I just have the frame and floor in. Thankfully most of my materials were free as well. I used to be a crew leader for Habitat and would take home the good scraps. So far I have about $80 in materials like hardware, window, and floor tiles. I am going with the deep litter method and it is recommended to use a slick floor like linoleum. I went with cheap sticky tiles and I am definitely going to need some floor adhesive to make them stay down but they were cheap and easy to lay. I am also installing a removable roosting bar so I can change it as it gets yucky.

I recommend covering the floor with a sheet of rubber or something the urine won’t soak into. That particle board will hold the ammonia. Which is bad for their respiratory system.

Did you paint the pallet chicken house with DIY paint? Do you have to seal it or will it hold up in the weather?
@JamiRayVintage4 жыл бұрын
We did paint it with DIY paint. It’s recommended to seal it, especially for outdoor use, but we didn’t see it. We’re going to let the weather work at it and see what happens. 😊
@mandybewkes53004 жыл бұрын
Hi guys love it. Did you seal it?

We didn’t, we’ll let it age and chip and repaint if needed but probably not lol.
@diywithcharlie30184 жыл бұрын
Looks great! Do you not need to seal the paint?
@JamiRayVintage4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You could seal it if you wanted it to weather better but we’re going to allow the elements to work at it a little and get that good chippy farmhouse look. The DIY clay based paint should cure hard in about 30 days and withstand the weather on its own pretty well. 😊❤️

Your hens lay with their coop that light in it? I thought chickens won't lay unless it's dark.
@JamiRayVintage9 ай бұрын
They need light in the winter. You can set it on a timer so they do have some time to rest.
@kayladionyssiou36364 жыл бұрын
That's way too many nesting boxes. You only need 1 box per 4-7 chickens. They all want the same box. & They'll just poop in the other boxes. Where are you going to put the roosts?

We’re getting 15 birds and Zeb will run dowels across from each side of the boxes. 😊
