Well, Janet borrowed and reworked the Riff from "I Hate Myself for Loving You" by Joan Jeff and the Blackhearts. She has a rock hit because she copied an existing rock song.

@zmbdog
@zmbdog 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah she said as a teen she was a big fan of Motley Crue, Poison and the like. She obviously knew what she was doing here. I don't think any other pop artist besides Janet or Michael could've pulled this off. Especially to the extent of hard rock/metal fans liking it. We will _pounce_ if a crossover comes off as pandering or inauthentic, which is probably why few attempt to dip their toes in the genre to begin with.

@@zmbdog I think Lenny Cravitz, Prince and maybe even Bruno Mars could have done a great job at it, too. Especially Lenny & Prince and especially as a duet. I could also see Sheila E. on percussion and and back- up vocals on this track. Whatdayathink?
@zmbdog
@zmbdog 3 жыл бұрын
@@virgilwyatt4632 I'm not familiar with Bruno Mars. Prince or Lenny Kravitz I could see but I've never thought of them as purely 'pop' stars. Lenny's always had a rock edge and Prince is like...experimental is what he does. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't ventured into metal. He actually commissioned Warrant's demos! They were done at Paisley Park and led to the band getting signed with Columbia.
@zmbdog
@zmbdog 3 жыл бұрын
@@virgilwyatt4632 Okay somehow the second half of my comment is MIA. Weird, here's the redux... As far as someone firmly in mainstream pop...it's hard to imagine. Like, Madonna or Paula Abdul couldn't do this. You can just tell, they don't have it in them. Cher might. I can't seem to gauge her. I just see a game show mystery box. I'd say the closest to maybe doing it well would be Tina Turner or Bonnie Tyler. Vocally, no problem. I just question if they could write it. This one isn't just good, it's appropriate, lyrically. And I'd bet it happened naturally, she just wrote what she felt. I like "Escapade" but if this song had the same subject matter, it wouldn't gel. I think with Tina or Bonnie we'd probably get something along those lines at best and it would just seem disingenuous. I'd love to hear them do a metal cover. Especially Tina, I could see her getting up on stage even with something super-heavy and just blow it up!

Perhaps I'm ignorant, but at what point was it taken from them? Modern "rock n rock" has without a doubt been heavily influenced by the early blues artists that were predominately black, there are a lot of similarities between the two genres. Song structures, chord progression and so on, but they are definitely their two different genres. Black Cat is a full on Heavy Rock song and that isn't typical associated with black artists. So as far as "reclaiming" rock and roll goes, it was never taken from them. The beauty of music is that people tend to reflect their musical heroes and you can hear it in their music, but that's not the same as taking something from someone. How many black artists can you name from the last century that wrote/performed rock songs like Black Cat? Janet just took a chance on something different from her norm and wrote a great song that I still love after all these years.

Janet is one the best singer/dancer to ever exist. Black Cat is fire, the energy it produces, captures your body and you can't help but move to the beat. Before you know it, you feel enraptured by it caught up in its grasp. You feel powerful and you feel like you can take on anything. And when they hit you with that guitar solo. You are headbanging to it. Janet this one of the best songs you have ever done. Female singers take notes this how its done.

I am 42 and I could literally overdose on nostalgia. The 90's was the last decade where there was still an innocence to life. They had the best movies, tv, and music. I sometimes sit and just close my eyes and go back to this time on my mind...just immersing myself in all the memories. I cry a lot just yearning for those days that I can never get back. The world is such a 💩show today and I just wish I could be a kid again. Just wanting to relive all those precious times 😢. I thank God for KZbin...one of the only online platforms I really look at. She probably wishes that too. It's been said for years that Janet (and to a lesser extent, Michael) would've rather pursued hard rock/metal if left to their own devices. But being part of a pop establishment like the Jackson family your path is somewhat predetermined, especially with Michael and Janet being the youngest.

Because Janet and Michael have a lot of the same on mannerism I sometimes feel like I'm watching Michael from the Dirty Diana or Another Part of Me video. It's also because of the outfits. Two amazing sibling performers.

+Letissia Scott Especially during this time. MJ wore the same pants, shirt and boots and his hair was longer. Couple that with those "looks" and snaps of the head and every other body part, it really is like watching either one of them. Janet brought the house down with her first albums.

+Letissia Scott I agree, I know in an interview--not sure which of them said it--but they said they often felt like they were in a playful competition together with each other
