The fact this was released in 89/90 and it's still ahead of it's time almost 30 yrs plus later over 3 decades later like dang. Soooo...credit for the 'whoever helped with the knowledge song in general' as well as for the whole album goes squarely to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the same dynamic duo who produced her 'Control' album. In the mid-'80s they were an unstoppable song writing and producing pair and worked not only with Janet but with New Edition (listen to the whole 'Heartbreak' album) in helping all of these young performers find their 'voice'. All of the songs on the first side of 'Rhythm Nation' are semi-dystopian in that they portray a world that requires change, but the first song on side B of the album/cassette is 'Alright', a full-bore dance-floor banger that seems to release the anxiety of the 'A' side of the album. Jam and Lewis were the masters of these great story telling albums. If you listen to 'Heartbreak' from start to finish, it's the struggle of young men trying to grow up in the entertainment industry. If you listen to the "Hearsay' album by Alexander O'Neal, it is your standard adult house-party with lots of energy at the beginning of the evening, people talking about people, and then people starting to pair-off towards the end. Get yourself some Jam and Lewis 'knowledge' and you'll have more strong songs than you know what to do with that sound just as fresh and relevant today as they did back in the '80s, '90s, 2000s and beyond!
