Look for this song to get the "cover versions" treatment in the days to come, from said communities. As good as they will be, they'll never be able to touch the original song.

Janet did this song because She stated She'd always wanted to do a Rock song! She pulled that off big time!
@zmbdog3 жыл бұрын
Yeah she said as a teen she was a big fan of Motley Crue, Poison and the like. She obviously knew what she was doing here. I don't think any other pop artist besides Janet or Michael could've pulled this off. Especially to the extent of hard rock/metal fans liking it. We will _pounce_ if a crossover comes off as pandering or inauthentic, which is probably why few attempt to dip their toes in the genre to begin with.
@virgilwyatt46323 жыл бұрын
@@zmbdog I think Lenny Cravitz, Prince and maybe even Bruno Mars could have done a great job at it, too. Especially Lenny & Prince and especially as a duet. I could also see Sheila E. on percussion and and back- up vocals on this track. Whatdayathink?
@zmbdog3 жыл бұрын
@@virgilwyatt4632 I'm not familiar with Bruno Mars. Prince or Lenny Kravitz I could see but I've never thought of them as purely 'pop' stars. Lenny's always had a rock edge and Prince is like...experimental is what he does. I'm kinda surprised he hasn't ventured into metal. He actually commissioned Warrant's demos! They were done at Paisley Park and led to the band getting signed with Columbia.
@zmbdog3 жыл бұрын
@@virgilwyatt4632 Okay somehow the second half of my comment is MIA. Weird, here's the redux... As far as someone firmly in mainstream pop...it's hard to imagine. Like, Madonna or Paula Abdul couldn't do this. You can just tell, they don't have it in them. Cher might. I can't seem to gauge her. I just see a game show mystery box. I'd say the closest to maybe doing it well would be Tina Turner or Bonnie Tyler. Vocally, no problem. I just question if they could write it. This one isn't just good, it's appropriate, lyrically. And I'd bet it happened naturally, she just wrote what she felt. I like "Escapade" but if this song had the same subject matter, it wouldn't gel. I think with Tina or Bonnie we'd probably get something along those lines at best and it would just seem disingenuous. I'd love to hear them do a metal cover. Especially Tina, I could see her getting up on stage even with something super-heavy and just blow it up!

Alise Thompson Both of them aren't very musical. And Madonna would totally kick ass in dancing. She practices dance moves, old and new, for hours every day and she's 7 years older than Janet.
@sergiocabezuela97139 жыл бұрын
+Phillip Daniel Janet has proved in the past as well recently in her concerts that she can dance stronger, sharper and smoother even if she's 7 years younger than Madonna. Watching her technical dance routines in her music videos and concert footage is more than enough proof she's way ahead of the rest. Now, don't get me wrong, I was also a huge Madonna fan growing up and still to this day listen to her past work. Janet was and still is a force to be wreckon with when it comes to her dance skills. ,
@billrandolph53759 жыл бұрын
+Phillip Daniel uh, no. Madonna may have practiced dance moves, ect...but, in her videos, as well as in concert, she has YET to display much of it. @@davidhabert Considering the attitude of the band members back then, I'm pretty sure the last thing they wanted was to have something to do with a pop star as much as they respected her. I remember her performance of this at the 1990 MTV VMAs and fell in love with it. Less than 2 months later it went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marked the first time that any artist had #1 hits from the same album a year apart (she topped that when Love Will Never Do Without You hit #1 in early 1991 giving her #1s fro the same album in 3 different calendar years. Rhythm Nation 1814 is imho a very underrated album -- 4 #1s, 6 top 2s and 7 top 5s (she likely would have had an 8th top 5 if A & M had released State of the World as a single).

For the album version of "Black Cat", most of the guitar lines were played by Dave Barry, including the intro, main riff, and a memorable thematic solo. Barry consequently became Janet Jackson's longtime touring guitarist. John McClain, A&R executive for A&M Records, provided the slide-guitar part, while Jellybean Johnson played the funky guitar part that punctuates the album version of the song. Although credited on the album, Jesse Johnson provided a guitar solo that was not used for the album version, but is featured in each of the remixes. The video edit of "Black Cat" features Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme on rhythm guitar, while the 'Guitar Mix' features Vernon Reid of Living Colour.
