Janis was a hell of a woman, one of my past friends, now deceased played guitar for The 4 Seasons long ago, he was a tea totaler. Janis called him a Pussy because he wouldn't share a drink of liquor with her at an event long ago. What a super, hard headed girl. And talented beyond all others!

Love the shots of Cass Elliot with her jaw dropped. The Mamas and the Papas were some of the organizers of this festival so she heard the name, but this was her first experience hearing the singer. Like the rest of us, she was mesmerized.

Janis Joplin put 100% of herself into every performance. Kudos to the cameraman who zoomed in on her feet when was literally coming out of her shoes, and also to the one who zoomed in on Mama Cass (whose stunned expression captured the effect that Janis was having on the entire audience).

This performance was an historic moment in music. I saw Janis on O"Farrell St in SF back in 69 and later that day down near Union Square in her multi colored Porsche as a passenger. One of a kind never to be duplicated. Hard drinker and hanging out with the Hells Angels. Died to young.

Mom used to play Pearl album all the time in my childhood so I've always had a love for Janis. SUMMERTIME studio version is my favorite and sublime. I have her along with SRV and Joe Cocker in my all time passion trio. Momma Cass did a lot of momma like stuff for a lot of the young music stars of the time like James Taylor, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Joni Mitchell and more. The Topanga Canyon documentary is great information.

This was Janis first major public appearance. She was not known yet, her name was not even the advertising. ❤❤ The filming of this song::::: The most amazing thing of all is that it nearly didn’t happen at all. Big Brother and the Holding Company, one of the new breed of San Francisco bands being featured at the festival, had actually performed once already at the fest, the day before, on June 17. Their new manager, Albert Grossman, had only met most of the group for the first time at the festival and had refused to grant the filmmakers the right to film the band’s set. When the audience reaction was overwhelmingly positive, he was convinced to have the group perform the following day June 18th, as well-to film it. The only act to play two sets at Monterey. Janis was 24 at this performance, her candle only burned another 3 years.

Janis sang this at Woodstock in 1969, 5 days in the summer June 1970 she was on the Festival Express, a 14 coach traveling music festival train, that went from Toronto to Calgary, Canada. The movie Festival Express 2004 showed footage of Janis performing and having fun on the train.😅 It's hard to believe 3 months later she would die of an overdose 😪 Oct.4,1970! 3 months later Jan.1971 was the release of her Album Pearl it went to number one on the Billboards, to bad she didn't get to see it😢 but in the 1974 hit the Righteous Brothers "Rock and Roll Heaven" they sang Janis gave us a piece of her heart❤️ 💙 💜 😊 RIP Janis keep singing with the best in heaven. ✌️ ☮️ Peace and Love Gary 😊 a good reaction would be Righteous Brothers" Rock and Roll Heaven"😂

Ive watched this video countless times and it never fails to give me chills! My favorite part is watching her feet, and the way that she almost levitates herself with emotion and feeling. Her passion pours out of her soul and straight into ours. She wasnt well known, and neither were Jimi Hendrix or Otis Redding. You might want to check out Otis Redding's performance of "Ive Been Loving You Too Long" from the same concert. Another one that just pours out the passion! Janis's star still shines brightly!

I read that this was a 2nd performance at that festival. The first time, she wasn't recorded and she knocked everyone's socks off, so they arranged for her to come back and this time they filmed it. Thank God they did capture it! 3 years later, my 16 yo step-sister and I ran away from Toledo, OH to go see Janis at the Monterey Fest in 1970. We got there but she died 2 weeks before the festival. We still went to it. My favorite Janis song is Summertime, performed in Germany in 1969. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ-YhYGnn9p7n7c&pp=ygUVc3VtbWVydGltZSBsaXZlIGphbmlz

Janis was relatively unknown at this time. She was only about a year into her professional music career. But she blew everyone away with her rendition of Ball & Chain". Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.

I wish you and so many others - would watch a version of this song OTHER than Monterey. It was one of her first big shows, and she was not yet a mature singer. Listen (audio only) to the version on her first album ("Cheap Thrill")- which is live, or the one from Frankfurt, Germany years later. The difference is astounding. As good as this is . . . it pales. And there are live versions of "Summertime" that are magnificent, too.

Just want to state that while Janice was the star, this and so many of the performances reacted to on KZbin is by Big Brother and the Holding Company, the vehicle that brought her to fame. Their intro and backing playing greatly contributed to the impact of their recordings. Yet, they never receive an iota of credit, even to the extent that the actual name of the band is never included. As for Janice, there were none before her or ever since to match her brilliance and intensity. Check out their rendition of Summer Time and Turtle Blues (written by Janice), the album version (Cheap Thrills). Thanks for the reaction!
