In December 2022, Japan unveiled its largest military buildup since World War 2 - taking aim at China’s growing military assertiveness in the region. But Japan’s military expansion and efforts to contain China began long before that. Michiyo Ishida was given access to Japan’s new military bases on the Ryukyu islands in the southernmost part of the country where she witnessed Japanese efforts to put up a defence barrier in the East China Sea. Under Japan’s new national security policy, missile units capable of reaching as far as China will be deployed on new military bases on the southern islands by 2026. Officials say Japan will be safer with the new deterrence power. But the military buildup has stoked fears among locals.

@yopyop3241 11 ай бұрын
In the aftermath of WW2, the US preference was for Ryukyuu to split off from Japan as an independent country. But when referenda were held, the people of the Ryukyuu islands overwhelmingly chose to remain part of Japan. Sovereignty comes from the will of the people. Self determination. The people of the Ryukyuu islands DETERMINED for themSELVES that their sovereignty was as part of the country of Japan.

@yopyop3241
@yopyop3241 11 ай бұрын
@@jont2576 It is the will of the people that determines sovereignty. That is the current nearly universal international consensus. That is not how the world has worked for most of history, however. For most of time, stretching back to way before the dawn of humanity, the universe operated on the basis of “might makes right.” Respect for self determination is a relatively recent development and is a sign of the moral maturation of humanity. For most countries, it makes sense to date their ascension from “might makes right” to “self determination” to the date when they first applied for membership to the United Nations. Self determination is a foundational principle encoded in the UN Charter. In the case of the US seizure from Mexico of the lands that now make up the US Southwest, that seizure occurred during the “might makes right” era. More recently, the operative principle has been self determination. The US’s actions throughout have been in accordance with the norms that were operational at any given time.

@yopyop3241
@yopyop3241 11 ай бұрын
@@jont2576 Correct. But polls routinely show near-consensus support among Texas citizens for Texas remaining a US state. There is a law on the Texas books that states that secession is illegal, but that law dates back to the 19th century and “might makes right” times. In the current “self determination” era, if the people of Texas ever wanted to split from the US, it would be a trivial formality to get that law overturned. There is a huge load of precedent-setting judicial rulings out there that make it clear that that law is incompatible with current law and judicial thinking. But until the people of Texas reach the point of wanting to split from the US, that law will probably remain unchallenged. No one wants to expend precious time and money shepherding a challenge to a law that isn’t impacting anything through the courts and/or legislature. I will further note that anyone is free to lobby in favor of splitting Texas or any other entity from the Union as long as they register their activities and reveal their sources of funding. So for example, the PRC is free to set up a group in the US to push for Texas secession. As long as that group discloses its activities and sources of funding, that’s entirely acceptable. That’s entirely analogous to the US openly providing funds to the National Endowment for Democracy to advocate for democracy in locations around the globe.

Without those islands, it becomes impossible for much of the year for Russia to send ships to its submarine base on Kamchatka. That would make make that base economically untenable, because supplies would have to be flown in at huge expense by airplane. The effect would be to kill off Russia’s presence in the open Pacific. If the war in Ukraine drags out long enough, Russia could end up weak enough that the Japanese could basically just stroll in and take over those disputed Kuril islands. If that happens, that will make Japan and the USA the big winners of the war in Ukraine. Finally, you need to research the “tyranny of distance” in light of the geography of China’s critical logistical trade lifelines and the US vs China’s base locations.
@Peichen01

@@yopyop3241 You do know the Soviet and then Russia and China already built pipeline to transport those oil right? You really think you thought of something they didn’t realize for decades? China not only have the most robust pipelines to transport western and Siberian oil to the east, China also have the biggest and most robust power grid to transport renewable power from west to east. More than half the world’s HVDC links are in China and needless to say China is also the biggest generator of renewable energy
@yopyop3241
@yopyop3241 11 ай бұрын
@@Peichen01 Pipelines from Russia and Central Asia to China are dinky little things compared to China’s needs. Design capacity of less than 5% of China’s needs. You’ll also note that they were invariably built by Western companies like BP, Exxon, and RDS that developed their expertise in locations like Alaska and the North Sea. The Russians and Central Asians have not proven to be capable of maintaining anywhere close to the design capacity of those Siberia-to-China pipelines on a consistent basis. Apparently, Russia’s ability to develop and maintain pipeline infrastructure has fallen off a cliff since the breakup of the USSR. You might be tempted to point out that Russia’s big pipelines were built without much technical experience. Russia’s big pipelines were constructed more than sixty years ago on a figure-it-out-along-the-way basis. The main tool was brute force. In theory, they could do the same now. However, Russia used massive quantities of what was essentially slave labor that was provided by the gulag system to get those pipelines built. No one knows how many died, but it was undoubtedly many millions. Russia doesn’t have the ability to press millions and millions of Ukrainians, Poles, Kazakhs, Lithuanians, etc. into forced labor camps anymore. I guess China could provide the numbers, but with Chinese young people refusing to take blue collar jobs in China, I think forcing Chinese young people into Russian slave labor work camps in Siberia would probably be untenable. Renewable energy is good for what it is, but oil is often called “the lifeblood of the modern industrialized economy” for very good reasons. The Arab Oil Embargo was an extremely traumatic economic event for the US back in the 1970s. Researchers peg the magnitude of disruption to US oil supplies at less than 5%. Compare that 5% number to what we are discussing for China here. Cutting China’s maritime oil import lifelines would cut China off from around 75% of the oil it needs.

Thats not golden rule. Yall are going to look at me like I'm crazy but if you believe in the MANDELA EFFECT, I have a short story for you or make that two short stories. I was in 5th grade in (1998) and I was looking at a globe in Mrs. Akins classroom and as I was looking at the globe I saw the year 1991 on it, and I was looking at the USSR and countries around it. then I looked at Japan and Japan had half of Sakhalin, all of Korea, and all of Kamchatka. I was confused on Sakhalin because it was split in half, so I ask Mrs. Akin who owns this piece of land, one part was colored orange and one was purple, she said Russia owns one half and Japans owns the southern half, my questions didn't stop there. Next I ask what does USSR mean and she said The Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics but now it's new name is Russia which is it's old name. I said oh ok.... Next I ask her about Japan, (before I get started, this is the teacher who taught me how to read but I won't get into to that today, back to the story) What does this say by Japan, she replied The Dominion of Japan- all that was colored in purple which were, all of Korea which was in a totally different spot, Korea was north west of Japan, Kamchatka, South Sakhalin, the northern Territories. Korea said Korea but it was part of Japan. I ask, Why does this say Korea but it's Japan and Mrs. Akin told me Japan took over Korea (centuries ago) .......... So they own Korea, so Korea was not a country, just a province of Japan. I will cut the story here and say, what the heck was she telling me, but I remember the map very vividly she wasn't lying but now nothing matches. I remember the Vietnam war but the Korean war never happened. Vietnam was two countries north and south. except the communist were in the south, and we were trying to free the north from the south. Communism ended in China in like 1994 I was only 7 years old when I saw the fall of communism in China, I remember it very vividly.

First of all, let me point out that what you said is a bunch of nonsense. In the process of resisting Japanese aggression, China suffered over 35 million military and civilian casualties, while Japanese soldiers suffered over 1.3 million casualties. Do you know why there is such a large proportion of casualties? There are two reasons: Firstly, Japanese soldiers kill every person they see, regardless of the civilian population. Men, women, old and young, kill every person they see. Secondly, Chinese soldiers are facing a shortage of supplies on the battlefield, often with a company of over a hundred people and only over thirty firearms. Chinese soldiers often use large knives, wooden sticks, and steel forks to fight against the Japanese army on the battlefield. Do you know why Japan wanted the Nanjing Massacre? It's just to scare all the Chinese people. But the indomitable Chinese people have always been fighting to the death, not surrendering or retreating. Do you know the thoughts of ordinary Chinese people? We look forward to the Second Sino Japanese War.

As a Chinese Malaysian, I grew up on stories from my parents and grandparents on the brutal invasion and occupation of Malaya during WWII by the Japanese. My father was witness to weekly decapitations in the local marketplace of any Malayans that the Japanese soldiers thought were not respectful of them. It could be something as simple as not bowing quick or low enough to them when they passed by. And we are not even talking of those Malayans that actually resisted them. Further, as Chinese Malayans, we were singled out for especially brutal and barbaric treatment due the support we gave to China during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) that predated their invasion of Malaya. That is why, I and probably many others from countries that suffered under the brutality and barbarism of the Japanese during WWII, do not welcome the rearming of Japan. Remember during WW1, Japan was part of the Allied powers and fought on the side of the Americans and British against the Germans in Asia, where the Japanese Empire seized German possessions in the Pacific and East Asia. Yet, only two decades later, they were at war against the Americans and British, and invaded and conquered their colonies in Asia. Who is to say that in another two decades time, Japan would not become a militaristic nation again with desires of conquest in Asia? British historian Mark Felton claims that up to 30 million people were killed, most of them civilians: "The Japanese murdered 30 million civilians while "liberating" what it called the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere from colonial rule. About 23 million of these were ethnic Chinese. It is a crime that in sheer numbers is far greater than the Nazi Holocaust. In Germany, Holocaust denial is a crime. In Japan, it is government policy." Yet, all you hear in the West is the Jewish holocaust where only 6 millions Jews were murdered by the Nazis. You hardly if ever hear any discussion about the staggering numbers of ethnic Chinese killed in China and South East Asia.

Diesel-electric subs are better for Japan. Shut down the diesel engine, and they’re absolutely silent. Nuclear powered subs cannot shut down their nuclear reactor and so are inherently noisier. Diesel-electric subs are deadlier and more cost effective. The main benefit of nuclear subs is their range, but that’s not needed, because Japan sits right off the coast of China. Japan’s very highly-regarded fleet of diesel-electric subs is the right tool for the job. The only question is whether or not they have enough of them.

Thousands people joined a demonstration in Okinawa's prefectural capital on Feb. 26 to protest the Japanese government's plans to build up its defense capabilities on a group of islands in the country's south for a possible contingency in Taiwan. The national government is moving forward with plans to bolster the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) and deploy missiles on the Nansei Islands including Okinawa amid concerns of contingencies. Participants in the demonstration in Naha voiced opposition, with one saying, "I want the government to hold thorough dialogue to ease tensions with the neighboring country." The group's 69-year-old executive committee chairperson Takamatsu Gushiken, who has worked for many years to recover the remains of those who perished in the Battle of Okinawa toward the end of the Pacific War, told the rally, "Militarization is being pushed forward at such a speed that it does not leave leeway for the people of Okinawa to think. We must not resort to shelters or evacuation, but choose to stop Okinawa from becoming a battlefield." Hiromori Shimoji, cohead of a resident group opposing the deployment of missiles on Miyako Island, which hosts a missile unit, commented, "The GSDF camp is in an area close to residential homes, and the ammunition depot is also near the community. If something happens, residents would not be able to survive it." After the gathering, participants marched through the streets of Naha while holding signs reading, "Don't make the islands into battlefields!" and "No more military bases."

Well regardless, better to be prepared for war and have some survive the outcome, then not prepared and no one remaining.

@@rickjames18 Your data is wrong and not majority people for the data is small , but may true in the future if the heat goes up. Takahashi Kosuke March 07, 2023. A new opinion poll conducted by the Japanese government showed that the proportion of people who think the size of the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) should be expanded hit a record high of more than 40 percent in 2022. The Cabinet Office has tracked the public’s thoughts on the SDF’s every three years since 1969. The latest poll was undertaken from November 17 through December 25 last year to figure out the Japanese public’s views on the SDF and defense issues. Of the 3,000 adults aged 18 and older targeted in the mail survey, 1,602 people, or 53.4 percent, responded. Regarding the size of the SDF, 53 percent said that the current level is fine, while 41.5 percent said that it should be reinforced. The latter is the highest figure since the government began asking that specific question in 1991, though the polling method has changed. The percentage of respondents who replied that the size should be expanded increased by more than 10 percentage points, from 29.1 percent giving the same response in the previous survey conducted in January 2018.

@@happymelon7129 yeah but Japan’s public view isn’t everything. No unqualified person, especially one whose job isn’t analyzing geo political conflict, should have the ability to interpret risk. That’s what their government is for. And while yes they can protest, there are cases where the government won’t adhere to common opinion. In this case, it makes sense that the Japanese government is prioritizing the preparation for war. We know it’s coming. China has literally stated they’re going to attack Taiwan. It’s not if, it’s when.

When the radar that catches the stealth aircraft comes out, it's just a fighter that falls from a small bomb fire that doesn't mean the stealth plane at the moment, which is the main reason why the U.S. does not give up the f-16.f-15 now

Countries have been trying to build the perfect radar since the 60s and stealth has only improved. It is a constant battle but one observation to make is that China finally developed the J-20 and carriers both weapons that people thought would be obsolete by now but if China is following the US they must understand stealth will only get more important. Look at what they do not what they say. Same goes for carriers, people said, China have carrier killers now so carriers are worthless but China is still building carriers. Most still be important.

I’m not Japanese. However, I’m Asian, living in a country potentially conflicting with Chinese influence. I don’t understand what these island residents want? They prefer not to militarize, in fear of war with China? And they prefer to “communicate” more with their potential enemy? Ok, let them communicate, then. What will they communicate? To be friends? If that works, that’s fine. However, my country had tried that, and the response was, ok, let’s be friends after they strip my country of all the natural resources and annex all our land, thank you. I think, it’s possible, if thy want to be slaves to other countries to avoid war at all cost. War is terrible, its better to avoid war; but, only at a certain cost. Peace is great. Sometimes, peace is maintained through a balance of military power in the region.
