@@msdgroup9164 No duh. Buying the world's greatest jets is a no-brainer for a lot of these wealthier countries. Japan in particular manufacturers these jets, and makes them slightly better in specifications like the F-2. The US may do many things very wrong but one thing they do right is fighter jets. That type of manufacturing always moves to less developed nations, not more developed nations. You're going to see things that used to commonly be made in China move to places like Vietnam, Malaysia and India once enough factory infrastructure is in place. Maybe Mexico is in that category too. Japan, the US and Western Europe are never getting low skill manufacturing back, and South Korea will be in that category soon too if they're not already.

Looking at what NATO countries spend on their military nowadays, China and Russia can't keep up. Japan is a very good ally to have. Thanks to Russia and China for doing joint military training close to Japan. You woke up one of the biggest and advanced nations of the world. They also make semiconductors and weapons. All you need to become a superpower like the US. If they spend enough we can just laugh when Russia and China make threats. Europe would be much safer too when Japan is on their east coast.

Japans GDP has been regressing for decades, they were on their way to become a superpower in the 80s, the US and EU forced them to sign Plaza Accord, now Japan is in "The Lost Decades" and became quite literally a US vassal state, no superpower has another country's military bases on their own soil. Japan doesn't really have its own foreign policy, when countries want to make deals with Japan they talk to the US, because every serious player on the international stage knows who is the real master of Japan.

@@TheRealIronMan China is exactly in the same scenario as Japan was in the 1980s. The biggest real estate bubble ever. Aging population. Very low birth rates. Too much debt. The only difference is that Japan was a developed economy with a relatively high consumption rate. People in Japan actually made decent incomes. China is still developing and most people are dirt poor. The U.S. is sanctioning China every weak. The U.S. is putting the boot on China's neck to release that last bit of breath. Then it will beg the U.S. for help. China is already asking the U.S. to improve relations. It's too late...

I agree Japan has a right to defend itself, they have no choice. But they have never really apologized to all the neighboring Asian countries they invaded, murdered, and raped during WW2. They admit they invaded other countries but deny that human rights violations ever happened. Years ago I dated a girl from South Korea. The history books they used were printed in Japan and never mentioned any human rights violations. Japan, like many oriental Asian countries, is a culture of shame and honor. Unfortunately, this means Japan will never admit what happened and sincerely apologize. Germany is better, at least they admitted what they did was wrong. I say this because Japan has a bad history of starting small and then letting their egos get in the way and before you know it they are invading neighboring Asian countries.

Huntington was wrong (book "Clash of Civilizations") when he surmised that Japan would be subsumed by Asian culture even if under the regional power of China rather than side with the West. Just remember the greatest trade alliance that ever was between Japan and the US didn't come to be through the efforts of government. You can thank the video game community of both America and Japan for that and no I do not mean Nintendo, capcom, Sony, or Microsoft. The true driver for so much of the tech we enjoy today is the completely aloof gamers that just kept everyone interested for so long. A community between communities speaking the language of video games gave us LED screens, HDMI, wifi, touch, solid state memory, USB ports, and literally everything on your cellphone aside from the headphone jack(if you even have one). So don't thank our governments thank those lazy, distant, and perpetually uninvolved citizens that drove demand for better graphics and hardware.

Japan's upgrading of its defense posture is a step in the right direction certainly, but it will struggle to play catch-up and time is not on its side. The LDP's pro-business attitude towards China remains, and has the potential to undermine perceptions of Japan as a reliable ally. USA and partners need to demand real, substantive structural and governance reforms from the Japanese government and ruling elite in return for enhancing security support.

I can see why Japan is arming themselves, but make no mistake, if Japan again becomes the dominant power in the East, they will become the new enemy. That's just the nature of geopolitics. Just look at WW2. China and Japan's positions were pretty much reversed, and China was the ally. Not to mention that at this point in Japan's economic development, they were already invading and brutally suppressing other Asian countries. I wouldn't be so sure about peace.

They need to urgently modernize all equipment to the best available right now. Place urgent production at higher priority than long term development projects. Older armored vehicles, rifles, and aircraft all have immediate production alternatives available now. Just accept the current products and pay for the production. All tanks should be replaced with Type 10. In near future - an active protection system should be added as one of the modular armor kits. All F-2 and F-15s should be replaced with F-15EX. In near future - build a semi stealthy airframe with similar equipment and features to replace them. All rifles should be replaced with Type 20 plus some additional war reserves in storage. In near future - update the standard color to neutral brown or khaki.
