I came to see a monorail, but I stayed to watch the scenery. Rural Japan is unfathomably beautiful, every frame of this video is like a painting. Thanks for taking us along for your walk and showing the ravine and waterfall, the forest and climate feels so oddly familiar to what I have at home, yet so much better taken care of.

Thanks for the video. A monorail operates on one rail. That looks tri-rail. There are two rails on the outside with wheels resting on them and then one on the inside which may help to prevent it from tipping over and operates similar to the middle rail in a rack railway providing a geared or some other place for the motor to work against. I'll try to look at it closer. Usually on these, the middle rail is often geared or has sprocket holes, because adhesion railways would slip in gradients above 10%.

"A monorail operates..." Agree, although that's what everybody calls it. I too would like to see the mechanism and the safety systems. This looks like a uniquely Japanese re-invention of the "Cog Railway" (see Wikipedia). We had one here near Bar Harbor Maine. It ran out of money but some of the bits were sold to Mount Washington in New Hampshire. I see there is another one at Pike's Peak in Colorado. This is not the same as the Cable Cars of San Francisco. There are related systems in UK, Germany, and many steep places.

Wel, it's not a monorail, I can see three rails there. But 43 degrees is really, really steep.
I am astonished at the amount of steel scafold pols used there instead of traditional wood or bamboo.

A bit of more technical detail about the 'mono' rail and how it works would have been nice.

That is wicked cool! I believe the proper word is not "monorail" but "vernicular". Besides, what you have there are 2 rails, not one. This vernicular is almost like a kid's toy -- so small and unassuming. But it gets the job done! Wow! Thanks for sharing.

What effort and precision and dedication have been put into this monorail to bring people to this gorgious place.
I found some rare and interesting about traveling in Japan. I don’t see much foreign tourists visit here unlike Tokyo, Osaka and Hokkaido where I can watch in English language or Malay language which is my 2 prefer language. At least you provide some information in description and subtitles so at least I can know what you’re talking about in this video.

This monorail uses the cable system for pulling?? I'm not seeing any cables in the video, and there's no way that there would be enough traction on the wheels for that extremely steep slope.
Very quite in Japan. Where is the people? Greeting from Bandung, Indonesia

Technically, it is not a monorail since it rides on two rails. The third, higher “rail” in the center seems to be what the carriage grabs on to in order to pull itself along.
NO WAY. There is no way that is lifting a cart full of people up that hill, tiny weightless Japanese people or not. It's definitely SCARY looking and sounding. I'm surprised it doesn't collapse.

Like a Road Machines monorail, going by the other comments . Can't help wondering if the 'locomotive' shouldn't be at the bottom , however .

Maximum gradient of Road Machines monorail : 4.75 degrees (mk 1), 6.3 degrees (mk 2) . So this machine has that beat...

It amazes me, living in Australia, how many nice things you can do in Japan and with so little fuss and stress. You are very lucky. Everything here is so difficult to access, nice areas are crowded, noisy, and hard to get to. People are nasty and selfish. It is horrible country I hate it.
