I worked for The Boeing Company during the YF-22/23 competition and it seemed obvious that "other influence" had a major part of the selection. I was stunned when the YF-22 was chosen when so many advantages were evident in the YF-23.

@stuartwillardscreenworx403521 күн бұрын
Japan is NOT building an upgraded YF-23 that was something as was an upgraded F-22 that was discussed the latter examined more purposefully, but these ideas never in the end got off the ground due to costs as the US found in its own studies being greater than an all new design would be and refusal to transfer IP meaning that only US personnel would have been allowed to maintain some systems or they would not be included at all. Japan objected to that needing to, in developing circumstances have ultimate control of its own major defence projects. Therefore it’s very much in a partnership with Britain and Italy to design the new 6th Gen fighter with no direct US contribution. The design combining Japanese and British developmental work none of which has direct input from YF-23 while RR is developing the dual cycle engines, Leonardo is lead on the radar sensors, but wil be a further development of the new radar being developed and presently being flight tested on Typhoon which fundamentally as it stands with the F-35 radar though that too is going through an upgrade programme. So beyond that, be it this project ie fundamentally Tempest as things stand, or NGAD/FA/XX little concrete is know so isn’t possible to determine true capabilities beyond calculated guesswork. But I really don’t understand where this YF-23 misinformation has come from let alone making a video based upon this construct.
@CraigWelsh-lm3wg14 күн бұрын
It's the usual "Click Bait" bollocks, and you're correct, Japan is involved in the Tempest programme. I mean, why would Japan, or any Country as technically advanced, want to update a 30 odd year old design?
@profo454411 күн бұрын
@@CraigWelsh-lm3wg did you know russia copied that 30 year old design ? its a pretty much proven fact, watch some videos. The su-57 matches the side profile of the yf-23 almost exactly. After it lost to the f-22, we left it sitting out in a desert for whatever reason, and they got pictures of it. Every stealth jet thats flying rightnow, lets take the f-22, its basically a twin tailed, twin engine, f-15/f-18 style jet, stealthed out. Theres no leap in airframe design. While the yf-23 was a leap in airframe design. It was a fully unique diamond wing one of a kind design, with better electronics the actuators on the yf-23 are invisible, on the raptor there bulges you can see them on the wings, the raptor also uses splitters near the engines, wich is outdated. Northrop still to this day makes the best electronics for high end/stealth aircraft.
@CraigWelsh-lm3wg11 күн бұрын
@profo4544 That's what the Russians, and the Chinese do. Why go to the expense of designing weapons systems when you can just hack into a countrys computers and steal their designs. I understand the Chinese hacked into the US Treasury computer system just yesterday. They are constantly trying to hack into UK Government computers all the time as well. I sincerely hope that our Governments are trying to hack into theirs. Happy New Year from Glasgow Scotland!

@caveatlector267110 күн бұрын
It's actually the other way around; the YF designation was present in the 1970s (likely goes further back than that) with the YF-16 and YF-17 going head to head for a light and inexpensive strike fighter for the Air Force. Unlike the YF-23, the YF-17 was redesigned and reborn as the Navy's F/A-18... similar, after a fashion, to the YF-21 becoming the limited adoption of the VF-22 in Macross 7. Macross Plus' competition between the YF-19 and YF-21 was highly inspired by the ATF flyoffs and the 19's FSW configuration was due to Kawamori's fascination with the USAF/NASA's X-29 technology demonstrator, and the overall look of the 21 is mildly reminiscent of the YF-23. Then there is the YF-29 with serious Berkut vibes.

Can Japan buy the YF 23 fighter jets frame?
@Nimbus170110 күн бұрын
Rumor has it years ago, there were serious discussion between Japan and the US about at least purchasing "some" of the plans of YF-23 program. Based on these images, it is likely they got some information, probably related to the air frame and fly-by-wire systems, which sounds like it has been upgraded. The YF-23 was the superior aircraft over what became the Raptor. It was not chosen for 3 main reasons. First, it's stealth coating was more difficult to produce and maintain (although better than the F-22). Second was cost. It was more expensive overall due several issues (notably maintenance and production). Third, it was more of a political decision between top brass deciding these things, and the contractors. I think it was a miscalculation in strategy for leaders to assume that stealth would be so much of a game changer. They expected in-close dogfighting to be the norm in the skies, just like it always was. They did not expect the beyond visual range (bvr) combat to really be where stealth excelled, which is what we see in all our stealth aircraft. The military brass overcalculated the very slight advantage of the F-22's maneuverability, over the YF-23's longer range, better stealth (including the coatings back then), and beyond visual range capabilities. I love the F-22 Raptor and think nothing (we know of) can beat it in the skies in a dogfight, but I think the YF-23 is the superior aircraft in design, and would have been better (although slightly more expensive per unit) in its capabilities. I'd love to see the minds in the US tweak the design a little and build some of these (optionally manned or unmanned) with all the advanced and new upgrades that are available now. Both these aircraft were designed and tested about 40 years ago, so we actually had multiple exceptional and functional stealth designs that worked and were airworthy way back then. It was just a very new technology back then with really the F-117 Nighthawk being the first (publicly known) stealth aircraft.

@markfischer362621 күн бұрын
You could call the YF23 upgrade a 5.5 generation fighter. It will have many of the features of what we expect of NGAD and FA/XX but not all of them. Using a turbofan engine its top speed will be limited to no more than Mach 3. Using a combined cycle engine, SR72 will achieve at least Mach 6+ and with the new GE/DARPA/USAF Labs rotary detonation combustion chamber could achieve Mach 10 or greater. NGAD might have no vertical elements. Despite YF23s much flatter tail NGAD and FA/XX might have no tail at all. There are still secrets about F22 that are so classified that no other nation knows about them, one reason why F22 was never exported. Will YF23 have the same class of avionics as NGAD? Many of them but not necessarily all. Nevertheless, YF23 will be a formidable aircraft at least on a par with F22, probably better. There will be no doubt that YF23 will be able to meet any challenge China or Russia can throw at it. The decision to choose YF22 over YF23 was in part due to problems the military was having with Northrop over B2 and because for some reason I don't know, the Navy rejected YF23 Either plane was very advanced not just for its time but today F22 beats every other fighter in most respects, the only other contender being F35 with more advanced avionics. What's surprising is that the Air Force was wowed by thrust vectoring. It was reported that the US had experimented with thrust vectoring supermaneuverability decades earlier and concluded that it was of little or no added value in combat. However, planes like F22 and SU57 are a lot of fun to watch performing their aerial acrobatics at air shows. Evidently SU57 still doesn't have the engines intended for it and most likely J20 is no match for F22 or F35. Both countries overstate their weapon's capabilities which is only fully revealed in actual combat. But we know that neither Russia nor China have competent military forces. They are both plagued with many problems. The US can rest easy but not rest on its laurels.
