If I could choose one Latter-day Saint to participate in an interfaith scriptural discussion, similar to what Jordan Peterson has done with Exodus and the Gospels seminars, it would be Jared Halverson.

I just watched you two on mormon stories podcast and I was so proud of how you defended the CHURCH of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am from the Era of John and never felt things were hid from members or that we were lied to. You choose Jesus Christ and the plan of salvation or you do not. I love that you spoke often about praying to Heavenly Father for the answers that you are seeking. I hope John does reread the Book of Mormon, thank you for giving him the invitation. Best of luck on your channel,

I love this comment. We choose faith in Christ rather than choosing to doubt and look for evidence. I don't want to minimize the struggle people have, but it does come down to choosing to believe and seeking things to support our weak belief. The strength comes from a small faith that grows as the Spirit guides us to more faith (evidence of things not seen). Oh how I pray everyone could understand that principle taught throughout the scriptures.

To be vulnerable: Halverson’s class “History of the Restoration” filled my first journal. I hand copied every one of his slides. It also single handedly gave my then-girlfriend-now-wife the kickstart back into the gospel/being church goers after uprooting our lives and moving to Utah in summer of 2018. Growing up outside of Utah, I never had the experience of knowing someone who cared about apologetics and history of the church and his effortless teaching and incredibly loving personality in teaching contraries is needed now more than ever. So so so grateful this collab/discussion happened! Thanks TSOJ! You guys killed it!

It seems to me that many Latter-day Saints have taken the guidance to "avoid contention" to an extreme and out of context. Far too many, including myself, have for far too long used "avoid contention" as a convenient excuse to neglect covenant obligations to defend truth & virtue. The Lord wants us to do both: defend truth & virtue while avoiding contention. The following examples make it clear to me that true peacemakers boldly proclaim the truth with love: - Melchizedek - Alma 13:14-19 - Nephi - 1 Nephi 16:1-5 - Jacob - Jacob 7 - King Benjamin - Words of Mormon 12-18 - Abinadi - Mosiah 12:19-24 In each instance, these men boldly proclaim the truth, and the actual result is establishing peace! As Paul counseled, we ought to speak the truth in love.

@andriy457 "For any reason?" 🤔 Wrongo bongo, my friend Andriy. The prophet has said: "Now, I am not talking about “peace at any price.”" I would humbly suggest fulfilling covenant obligations to defend truth & righteousness are included here. We indeed have a duty to future generations to pass on a society of liberty and righteousness, or at least a society in which future generations have a decent chance of choosing righteousness.

Jared Halverson, thank you. Very well put forth to us. I have a sister who left our faith for mainstream Christianity. I love, love, love, talking with her. In our last conversation we disagreed on doctrine. I shared my own personal conviction by personal revelation. We ended our conversation with my expression of love for my sister.( She was my 13th birthday present and we have been close ever since.) I also expressed that we will differ on gospel beliefs and that I was ok with that. I want to know what she now believes. It is a part of her everyday life. It makes her who she is and I love it. I want to be a part of it but it is the very core of our love for Jesus Christ and His Atonement that brings us together. We become giggling girls when we talk of our love for our Savior. I'm nearly 55, I'm not sure if I could have had that conversation 20 years ago. Grateful that I do now. I recently moved from Utah to Oklahoma where I am surrounded by gracious and loving Christians. I love them more because of my conversations with my sister. I pray often for a soft heart. Life has been rough and we’ve been treated in ways I never expected by our own LDS community. I do not want a hard heart because of the fragility of the human experience. Because the world stepped in in-between the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the human mind. And the world won out more often. My faith in members may shake from time to time but my heart and Spirit know the peace of our Savior. Again, thanks to all of you for continuing to share incredible knowledge and insight. 😁 Stay safe in your service for our country!!!! I thank you!!! I have had family from both US and the UK serve. I deeply love those who are vets and active military. Again, thank you. Stay curious and hungry. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Some thoughts on "thick skin and soft heart" - the thick skin is having boundaries. They allow us to have healthy detachment (instead falling intoapathy OR taking everything personally), including a detachment from the outcome. For example, love without detachment becomes manipulation - you're doing things to try to create a certain outcome for your loved one instead of loving them for the sake of it. If we engage in conversations with others about faith while being attached to a certain outcome, we will stumble, take things personally, etc. Loved this interview!

This 100% gave me chills! What a great perspective on conversing with others about their faiths! I have been wrestling with how to talk to others about our church. I even came to Ephesians the scripture about how the gospel is built on the foundation of prophets and apostles. But they still have a different take away of that scripture and I’m like HOW can I help people see why we need revelation from God through a prophet? This is perfect!! Thank you for these profound examples! Wow! I’m so excited! I will be taking lots of notes. I am a seminary teacher and the student often have questions about the anti they see on social media. This is why I have been on a mission to find the best way for them to approach. They even want to memorize Bible verses to show that those revelations are in the Bible just not as clear as they are in our new revelatory scriptures that aren’t new per say but ya know…Thank you again. This is so helpful!

Dear Paul Brothers, I am a HUGE fan of your Podcast! Also I am James, Nick, Ryan, and Annie Carrigan's grandmother and also a HUGE fan of them! I have taught the one on one Book of Mormon program to the missionaries at the MTC for 5 years. LOVED IT!~ Anyway, another subject. In the late 1980's early 1990's we moved to Portland, Texas outside of Corpus Christi, right when "The GodMakers" film was released! We suffered a great deal of persecution for our religion from the effects of that film by the people in Portland during the 3 and 1/2 years we were there. However, we were reading the Book of Mormon EVERY morning and it gave us great strength snd blessings and knowledge of how to face the persecute with love and service to the people. When we left and moved back to Utah we had and still remain friends with, several nonmember people there. I have been asked to speak at our Feb 3rd Empty Nesters group in Lehi, Utah on our experiences in Texas and how we used the Book of Mormon to turn those negative experiences into good relationships. Having listened to your inspiring podcast with Jared Halverson on the subject recently , I am wondering if either of you or both of you would be available that evening to share some of your thoughts from that podcast, along with me sharing our persecution experiences and how we turned them into loving relationships. I would appreciate a response ASAP. Thanks you! Diane Till 801-473-5906

I love the gospel so much. These discussions fill my cup. I have just listened to the first 11 minutes. In a discussion with my daughter who rejects the church, I told her exactly this (choose faith) when we were discussing her view gained from anti-mormon arguments and my answer didn't satisfy her: choose faith, choose which path takes you to happiness. Both sides of the argument were incomplete. There are too many unknowns to base decisions on 100% facts. There's a reason faith is the first principle of the gospel. Okay. Going to finish the podcast now.

The interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's dream in the Book of Daniel is presented as being correct based on several factors within the narrative: Divine Revelation: The interpretation was given to Daniel through divine revelation. Daniel and his friends prayed for God's mercy to reveal the mystery of the dream, and God answered their prayers by revealing both the dream and its interpretation to Daniel in a vision (Daniel 2:19). This divine source of knowledge is a key reason for trusting the accuracy of the interpretation. Daniel's Confidence and Praise: Before presenting the interpretation to Nebuchadnezzar, Daniel praised God for revealing the mystery, acknowledging God's wisdom and power (Daniel 2:20-23). Daniel's confidence in God's revelation underscores the reliability of the interpretation. Nebuchadnezzar's Reaction: When Daniel recounted the dream and its interpretation, Nebuchadnezzar was so impressed that he fell prostrate before Daniel and acknowledged the greatness of Daniel's God, saying, "Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries" (Daniel 2:46-47). The king's reaction suggests that Daniel's recounting of the dream matched what Nebuchadnezzar had experienced, affirming its accuracy. Fulfillment of Prophecy: The interpretation of the dream involved a prophecy about the rise and fall of kingdoms, symbolized by the different materials of the statue. Historically, the sequence of empires-Babylonian, Medo-Persian, Greek, and Roman-aligns with the interpretation given by Daniel, further supporting its correctness. In summary, the correctness of the interpretation is supported by the divine revelation given to Daniel, his confidence in God's wisdom, Nebuchadnezzar's reaction, and the historical fulfillment of the prophetic elements of the dream.

I appreciate the discussion about embracing the wrestle. However, I think one important distinction is that we believe we can eventually "come to a knowledge of the truth". The scriptures are replete with examples of people who came to know (whether by sight or by the power of the Holy Ghost) that Jesus is the Christ. Don't ever doubt that God can and will make truths known unto you. By the power of the Holy Ghost, ye may "know" the truth of all things. I know God keeps His promises.

I was not taught to interpret for myself or to trust myself. I was taught and told to trust the brethren cause they’ll never lead me astray. Personal revelation only goes so far…..if it isn’t in line exactly with church doctrine or theology or policies it isn’t valid, I got the wrong answers even told I let Satan influence me and to try again. The best thing I ever did was remove all the voices but God’s voice in my life. Still learning to trust myself and not hand my spirituality to authority.

No scripture is of private interpretation. The brethren are not there to get in the way of your relationship to God, rather to signal the way. We have many examples of false angels and false spirits deceiving people. None of us would want to see you led into a harmful belief due to something like that. Personal revelation is so important. But without someone with authority to interpret scripture, it is easy to twist it

The apostles and prophets are there to receive revelation for the church. They are to see around corners and help us navigate the turbulent times we are in. But they have been telling us they receive inspiration and revelation for Christ’s church on the earth, but we, the members are to learn how to “hear Christ”, “have the Holy Spirit as our guide”, “receive personal revelation for our individual lives.” President Nelson has been pleading with us and counseling us to know how to receive personal revelation for our own lives. Learn how to hear Him(Christ). If you go back to the last 5 years of conference addresses, EVERY ONE of President Nelson’s addresses have been challenging us, inviting us, counseling us to seek a personal relationship with Christ. ❤️☀️ And he had told us how we will need that relationship in coming days. 🙏🏻

I watched the Hello Saints with Jared and Jeff, Jeff was lamenting that Jared wasn’t a minister full time and Jared said he could never give up the Book of Mormon and the Temple. It seemed to me he was trying to say additional but I thought it was strange the Jeff didn’t recognize that Jared is teaching the gospel every day and reaching out to so many struggling with their faith. ❤

I've thought about a little bit about the topic of biblical authority, partly because of this channel (which focuses a lot on ways the Book of Mormon restores or clarifies the Bible). Differing interpretations of the Bible is not the only problem, but it is related to another big problem: errors and ommissions. Sooner or later you have to admit that the Bible as we have it today is not perfect, but once you admit the possibliyof error, you open the floodgates. How can we know what if any of it is reliable? Christian detractors would lean towards the second. This underscores the need for revelation and authoritative interpretation, but it also highlights the futility of using the Bible as ultimate proof in any kind of theological disagreement whether it be with a fellow Christian or an atheist. Faith is foundational to gaining knowledge. You have to choose a framework, guided by faith, and then you act on it and find out if it's true or not. But where do we get the framework for our faith? From "the word" whether that be Biblical texts or from the testimony of someone we know or an authority. Scripture is important because it's the jumping off point for our knowledge journey that starts with faith. Also, why should God have to repeat the same things to the prophets each generation if it's already written down? Scripture is a tool we can start with but it can't stand entirely on its own?

1. Contention is attacking someone's character like calling everyone "anti-Mormon" just because they disagree with LDS doctrine or the LDS church. 2. Both Jesus and Paul tore down false doctrine. 3. Until the prophets words are canonized to sort out the difference between when they are speaking as a man or when they are speaking from God, the argument holds no weight. 4. Otherwise, this was a great video with refreshing opinions on interfaith discussions.

After watching till 42:40, I have one question: why do you trust this authority you believe the LDS church has? If we go with the idea that Scripture is not enough and we need authority to give revelation about how to interpret it, why do you trust not only the scripture that was given to us by prophetic/apostolic authority thousands of years ago but the modern authority that the LDS church claims to have?

Great conversation! I enjoyed analogy of a trial. Christ is the one on trial in people’s lives. Not the Bible. The Bible is (among other things) evidence and people dismiss evidence when it doesn’t fit their narrative or case they’d like to build. It is important that people can come to make an accurate judgement on Jesus Christ. A man, myth, prophet or Son of God? I loved the point not letting their love for the Bible be a wedge between members of the Church of Jesus Christ and our other Christian family members. I think there was a missed opportunity to share the importance of the restoring the Book of Mormon in there as well. Similarly, we should not be afraid or ashamed to reference it either. I do like the emphasis on the importance of the Prophets and find that as extremely insightful point. One point I often think about is out of the 8 billion people in the world about 2.5b are Christian and believe in the Bible. The Bible builds a beautiful case that, Jesus is the Christ, the savior and redeemer of the world and is a strong testament. Many people still doubt Or don’t believe. The Book of Mormon is another powerful witness that Jesus is the savior, redeemer of the world and will deliver his people through his tender mercies to the children of men. If there are others trying to bring people to Christ let them come! When I came back to church, I only came for sacrament meeting and left. Now, 11 years later, God and pour out many blessing for me. Not because I have been the most faithful but because of his grace and mercy. I cannot wait for the day when Christ comes and corrects us all for our mistakes and errors in judgement. May God bless us all to be humble and wise!

we still have major problems in our church that we need to address or repent of - we need courage to change those false traditions and unbelief we hold as Latter-day Saints I love and am grateful for the church but for example why won’t the leaders come out and apologize for how they stewarded their sheep during COVID ? That’s just one of many many things It’s good to point out the good and true things of the church but we also need to start really grappling with the issues both leaders and members

34:00 1) they didn't have chapters and verses 2) many knew the references, no one had to say, hey this is scroll 2 from Isaiah. And who cares which scroll or book it came from if it was from scripture? That is a very weak argument. And the fact remains that Jesus quoted from scripture a lot. Such as when answering the temptations of the devil, saying " it is written..."

@ the primary method is revelation, which comes through prophets. Scripture is written down revelation. Every time there was a prophet or apostle alive, their word trumped scripture. So no, scripture is not and never has been primary

@@jpalmer2767 You are looking through the wrong end of the binoculars. Yes, true holy scripture is generated via revelation, but that is not how most people start their journey. Joseph Smith started how? By reading the Bible. How many people were called and chosen as prophets and have written down scripture vs how many people began hearing the word by reading scripture.? 99.9% of people are not generating holy scripture. I could list out many a scripture that further illustrate this point, and expressly tells us this, but I think it should be clear.

27:00 the scriptures themselves say that we are to be judged by what is written in the holy scripture, namely the Bible and BoM. As the Lord said, they both contain the fullness of His Gospel. Now, if we receive something today, by one called of God, then we also know that it will be commanded to be written down. We should not be following any doctrine that does not follow God's established pattern. Do you disagree or disagree?

I agree with you! Parable of the sower- Jesus compares the Seed to the Word of God. Vision of Tree of Life- Nephi says the Iron Rod is the Word of God. Alma 32- compares the Word of God to a seed that will lead us partake of the fruit. Why obtain the brass plates from Laban if Lehi was already a prophet? General Handbook requires EQ and RS lessons be based on GC talks, not scriptures. I’m sure King Noah told the people to “trust the priesthood keys”… and it got them many wives and concubines.

@@jpalmer2767 Actually, that's not what Joseph taught. He taught that we should not rely on the prophet and to not neglect ourselves and our own spiritual development. As far as BY, see how "oracle" is used in the scriptures. BY didn't read his scriptures much, and it shows. BY used the pagan meaning of oracle, meaning a person, as in a false prophet. Whereas in the Bible oracle is the place of communication with YHWH and the communication / revelation itself.

I believe holy scripture contains truth sufficient for salvation. But since it was given in a language and understanding that is not my own, it is not enough for me. 42:00 if you don't spend time in the word, how do you expect it to be written upon your fleshy tablets of the heart by the Spirit? Spending time in the scriptures grants more opportunities for God to inspire me. And it leads into all my other activities and relationships. Without the scriptures we would dwindle in unbelief. How would we know about God's love? God's mercy? God's covenants? Etc.

13:32 He might be right about this tactic but Jesus must have been referring to contention about doctrinal disputes WITHIN the church AFTER He taught them correct doctrine. At that point he told them to avoid contention. This Scripture gets applied to anything and every thing absent the context in which it was given. They cry "a Bible a Bible", only a Bible yet their creeds wherein they have established as doctrine is NOT even in the Bible or Biblical. The Bible never once uses the words 'Trinity:, Rapture," which is non Biblical. They have created dogma that is not Biblical. There is no indication that Linus, the companion of Paul in Rome ever received keys of Apostleship; only Episcopate (Bishop), yet the Universal Church states that Linus was the First father (Pope) even though Jesus said call no man father but your Father which is in Heaven. Matthew 23:9, These are clear indications that manmade creeds and doctrines and Papacy has not efficacy in Biblical writ, an obvious descent into Apostacy
