I agree, Maria and I once watched an hour long special on Chicago, on pbs. It felt like it was two hours. I make this point, because the nnarrator, took an hour just talking about the city's history. Which made it feel like, two hours. Also I was once forced, to watch a season of the show, in the first season. I was forced, by my mom. Who by the way, lies about doing that.

@@jth_printed_designs so an Antebellum themed party is going to be shooting for one specific aesthetic, the plantation owner/southern belle. These were children of rich plantation owners, not your everyday farmer’s family whose clothes would be far less elaborate. You won’t see an antebellum party where the men are dressed in rather plain clothes and Union suits, and the women in more suitable working dresses. I actually don't see the antebellum term as being inherently racist, but only because there's a very unique aesthetic attached to the "old south" that can be appealing. If you have a large victorian house with a wraparound porch next to some oak trees with spanish moss on them, it's going to look distinctly southern, regardless of whether that house ever belonged to plantation owners. I realize that it's a very fine line between glorifying the southern aesthetic and glorifying the confederacy, but I'd like to think that people can appreciate period architecture while hating slavery. Throwing an antebellum themed party is bizarre though. Just stick with "victorian" and invite those black friends you tout so fervently. Don't have any? Maybe the desire to throw an antebellum party is part of the reason why.

I know that The Bachelor is looked upon by most as just another silly, “harmless” game show, but if anything, the producers, show hosts, and editors are spreading harm and misinformation with their platform. @@Autumnaul Hey, thank you for letting me know that my logic may have some flaws. It’s always good to have honest feedback, as that helps me to improve myself as a person. I suppose the point that I was trying to make boils down to the fact that white people should not explain what is and what is not racist to black people, because they are not coming from a place of experience. Those who have experienced racial prejudice should be the ones to define what it means to them, is all I meant. It’s heathy to have a differing of opinions, though, and I’ll never respond with anger to being refuted; I’m sorry that my original point wasn’t clear. Have a great day!

@@Autumnaul when did this person ever say poc shouldn't have to explain racial experiences to white people? I know thats a lot of people's pov but they certainly never mentioned it and I don't understand why op apologized to you for something they never did. Most of the people saying poc shouldn't have to explain come from a place of, "hey, poc shouldn't have to explain why actively harming them is bad, having empathy would make that crystal clear." And there are tons of poc willing to educate others on their experience, but sharing that experience, as shown in this video, leads to being harassed and talked down to. It's obvious why poc aren't willing to go there with people who don't understand their lives, considering most of those people are either aggressively racist or supporting people/laws that are taking away minorities' rights.

I ran it by my friend who is black to make sure and she said it was not racist in any way. Also I genuinely don’t think there’s a difference. Racism is racism regardless of the reason behind it
@minisn30663 жыл бұрын
@@quirkyblackenby I totally get what you mean here, tho I think the difference lies on the source itself. Racism is and always will be racism. There is no point on downplaying it or sugar-coating it. However, racism is a complex social issue that arises from different origins. Racism can come from a place of hatred and intolerance (the worst kind) and it can also come from ignorance, which is where “racially insensitive” behaviours come from. I want to believe in the best of people (and I’m aware that it can be pretty foolish). I truly believe that it is possible for someone to not be at heart a racist individual, but still display racist behaviours. There are so many reasons a person can be misguided, whether it’s family, friends, culture, religion, media, etc, and so long they are willing to change for the better, then I think they’re not inherently a bad person. I’m not saying that it’s up to POCs to “fix” other people’s mistakes however. When someone hurts another person, regardless of their intentions as Jarvis explained, they should always reprimand their past actions.
@denied76163 жыл бұрын
i would say it matters. problematic behavior have different sources and if someone's trying to be hateful or offensive it's way worse. idk if people feel the same when it comes to race but for example if someone says something homophobic because they're uneducated and then understand what was wrong and apologize, i won't feel equally offended as when someone is being deliberately homophobic. i think the intention matters
@minisn30663 жыл бұрын
@@denied7616 But the homophobic action itself is problematic. I think that’s what Jarvis was trying to get at. It doesn’t matter what the intentions were, because the action is not excusable. However, if a person sincerely apologizes for said action, then yes they can be forgiven, but not excused. You can’t eliminate the direct consequences of an action after someone is forgiven. But then again, maybe that’s just me.
