The most beautiful soul I have encountered lost her life in a freak accident one warm June evening. I was beside her as she experienced her last moments of consciousness, curled up on the asphalt. We were about the age of the girls in this video. We were inseparable friends, getting into all the trouble we could find. She spit fire and made flowers grow all in an instant. Half blade, half silk. Star spattered diamond soul all encased in silver. She died badly. I spent most of my youth in a feverish haze born of shock and grief in the years that followed her loss. Though it has been many years, the way she died haunts me still. I still feel her in moments of stillness and quiet. I’ve spent all this time wondering where her soul may have drifted on to, what adventure she’s been on out there in the heavens. And what words she would give to me in a laughing lilt to recount it all. This song awakens my grief and exaltation like stoking a smoking fire. I am honored to hear it in my heart and feel it for her. I will mourn for her all my life. Thank you Jason Isbell.

Thank you for this song. I went through severe abuse as a child and blocked most of it out with alcohol and prescribed pills. I've gotten sober, I've been married to a good man for years now, but thinking of my childhood, esp my messy and complex teenage life- breaks my heart. No one should have to go through such abuse, esp all alone. This song and video reminded me that I was much stronger and capable then than I had imagined. It was rough, but your song reminded me that I've always been a strong person with a huge heart- even at my lowest. This song still makes me cry, but I've found peace in my tears as I release the pain and grow in gratitude and self-acceptance. Thank you, and thank you to all the good men out there trying their best for the complex and beautiful people they love- And a huge shout out to anyone alone and unable to trust due to so much pain.... you're not alone and you deserve love. Please keep going- the good will find you when you least expect it dear one. God Bless us all

Seen a few people share their interpretations of this. I find it very interesting how a song can spark different stories in people who listen. To me this is Jason reminiscing an old friend. Maybe to substance abuse or accidental overdose. Certain lyrics lead me to that, like, "Fighting my appetite," for his own admitted history with alcohol, and then nudging toward the possibility of the person he's writing about lost to a difficult time with another substance, "hydrocodone in your backback... maybe these words will hold the beast back". I can't know for sure, obviously, but regardless of how any of us see it this song is a work of art without a doubt. Any song that works on the imagination of the audience and touches their own real world scenarios is real work of are. Plus I think the choice of video is fantastic. It made sense to the way I understood the lyrics, but gave me a broadened way of how to think about the story, so hats off to the producer on there.

My interpretation is that they actually got hit by that truck (the battered look on the surviving girls face after getting 'headbutt' by the other girl), and the surviving girl has been in sort of a dream state ever since. The essence in the backpack was heaven and the other girl kept fooling with it. The survivor kept looking longingly at the her, like she missed her. She finally became an astronaut.

I thought something along those lines also. I think there’s some aspect of addiction in this too, with the lines “Hydrocodone in your backpack / Maybe these words will hold the beast back”, with the glowing backpack representing the alluring escape from reality that drugs give her. When she “wakes up”, i.e. comes down from the high, that feeling isn’t there anymore. I’m not totally sure yet. I’m gonna keep thinking on this one. In any case, this song is a tearjerker for sure. And gorgeous as always.
@texasplumr4 жыл бұрын
I thought it meant that her friend overdosed and died. They were lifelong friends and were trying to make it in this business. And the business swallowed her friend up. "Cold coffee on the fire escape, we bet it all on a demo tape, when we still had something left to steal" "Remember when we took too much? To get a little of the human touch. Hand to mouth and reel to reel." [Chorus "Are you still taking notes? Hydrocodone in your backpack. Maybe these words will hold the beast back." Then of course: "Heaven's wasted on the dead. That's what your Mama said. And the hearse was idling in the parking lot. She said you thought the world of me and you were glad to see they finally let me be ab astronaut." But then, reading your interpretation could make complete sense too. I think that everybody agrees that one of them is a ghost, one of them is now dead. No matter, he is a masterful song writer and makes me feel with many of his lyrics. Watching the video from ACL and he sings "Cover me up" with Amanda on stage always brings a tear to my eye. I've been clean 27 years and I know how fucking hard it is to get clean and then stay clean. Without support you just can't make it.

What a real treat from a brilliant writer like Jason Isbell. I am so glad he took the opportunity to let a visual artist interpret one of his songs, and did not slavishly churn out a 4-minute commercial of the band playing the song. This touches on real art. . . . the filmmakers vision-- and that is what this is, a short film, of what images and drama the lyrics and music evoke. It does not try to match the lyrics, or follow the plot of the song. it is something else entirely. A little slice of wonder.

Sorry to see the comment section closed on some videos lately. Sad situation when the people you try to reach turn on you, but it seems to be the norm these days. Thank you for caring for your fans, and trying to keep them from infecting each other.

My brother's best friend died last year. I mourned, but knew he'd been an alcoholic for years. I didn't blame him, his parents were both violent alcoholics, and for years he seemed fine, that maybe somehow he'd beat the genes. He was 46. This past holiday weekend, my brother called again. His friend's 23 year old son had died Friday night of an opioid overdose. I was addicted, I am now no longer. One girl makes it through, the other one doesn't ... and that's all there is. Thank you for always being as honest as possible.

I see this song as 2 unwanted girls who are homeless. They have found each other. At the departure of one, the other must go on alone.

I thought we were both immersed together, I got out… I failed him, I left to save myself and our son, he was stronger when we were together, now I know it was his love for me that kept him above water, I held our person we made together above all else, he fell because I left him. Dead. Now he’s an Astronaut. Like he always wanted and dreamed… RIP Kyle, I love you so much, the mere mention and thought of you wrinkles my top lip and squeezes the water from these green orbs, I’m sorry, but I will NEVER leave our creation, this blend of emotions and seeking a higher self, he is us
