Just installed clock spring in 2006 Matrix. Followed your instructions step by step-a truly excellent how to. I would add one thing: If you rent a puller, check it to make sure it is in good shape. I had to take the first one back to autozone as some silly completely roached it.

Thank you for the great video. I followed it and replaced my 2005 Corolla with a new clockspring. However, the airbag light is still on. Do I need to reset the airbag light after the replacement? How to reset if necessary? Or are there other problems? Thanks
@javosgarage

Hello, I apologize for extreme delay in responding. I didn't run into your situation, but if I did, I would first disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and then see if that reset the system. Next, I would get the vehicle scanned for codes to know precisely what is causing the light and ask them to clear the codes. If that didn't resolve the problem (I hate to tell you this but...) I would return the part and exchange it for another one. If that didn't resolve the issue, I would return the part altogether and go with a different part manufacturer (probably a factory part, it's more expensive but may fix the problem). If that didn't resolve my issue, I would have to break down and get the dealer to use their factory scanners and experience to find the solution. I hope that helps you. Sorry again for the delayed response. Thanks for stopping by!

Thank you for your video! I was able to replace the clock spring successfully, which corrected the original problem of the cruise control not working. The old clock spring had a ground, but the new one did not. I didn’t feel that would be a problem, but now the air bag stays on all the time. Could the lack of ground be the problem or should I consider something else? Thank you for your time! Lynn

So..i have an 03 corolla. for a while the air bag light was on. Then one day the horn wouldn't shut off, so I disconnected the plug at the horn to shut it up. A few weeks later I discovered the cruise control isnt coming on either. Does that also sound like a bad clock spring? They want 325 bucks for a new one at O Reils', so im trying to make sure that's what's wrong before I commit to the order.

I apologize for not seeing your comment earlier. I hope you found the solution. I don't know your entire situation but I would start with verifying all my connections were good, if that checked out I honestly would jump straight to returning the clockspring and getting an exchange. Hello Marco, I'm sorry for the delayed response. Unfortunately, the solution will be removing the clockspring and ensuring it aligns with the pins on your turn sign signal switch. There are pins that should set your blinkers back to the neutral position when the steering wheel is returned to the neutral position (wheels straight) after making a turn. Look for those down inside the column. Fortunately, I didn't run into this issue during my replacement. I no longer have this vehicle; otherwise, I'd shoot a quick video for you. I wish you the best. Hey there I'm only part way into your video and it's so informative already! I have a 2005 Toyota tundra that needs a new clock spring because of non-operational horn. When the horn area is pressed it works intermittently and very rarely at that. I've already changed the relay. I'm pretty darn sure it's the clock spring from other research I've done. Would this video be the same guide to a 2005 tundra? And I see that you haven't made videos for a long time so maybe you won't even see this message and question. If you do happen respond to this message I thank you in advance! And I appreciate your video! Thanks again!

Unfortunately, I'm not going to be of much help to you here. I have not done a clockspring in a Tundra so I can't say how much this video would help. Now the ideas and concepts are probably the same but the process I'm sure is going to be different. I'm sorry, I wish I was of more help to you here. I wish you the best on your project. how is your airbag after 3 years? is it still working? I bought a cheaper $36 one. And after 2 months, this airbag sometimes works, sometimes not. I wonder if it is becasuse of cheap one? hope yours last many years, but mine only for 2 months. The one original from my car working from 2007 until July 2022.

I no longer have this Corolla so I honestly can't give it a long term review. It worked for the few months I had the car. Your right though, sometimes it's worth the extra investment to go with a factory part. In this case a factory part was substantially more which is why I went with this one. I didn't have any issues and I'm sorry yours did after a short period of time. Thank you for stopping by and taking a moment to leave me a comment and I apologize for responding sooner.

@javosgarage 4 жыл бұрын
@James Donovan - Hi James. If you had not replaced the clock spring I would say you have all the symptoms of a bad clock spring! The best thing to start with would be to find out what codes you have and it will point you in the right direction. If that’s not an immediate option I would try a few initial things. Do you have the airbag simulators? If so, I would remove the airbag, disconnect the battery for 15-20 minutes, insert the simulators and see if your airbag light goes away. If it does, it would point to a problem in your airbag. If it doesn’t it would point to a problem with the new clock spring (I know it’s new but they are man made so it’s possible), you could have a ground issue or a broken wire. When both the horn and airbag still have issues with a new clock spring I would begin looking into the wiring, especially the grounds. If the simulators aren’t an option you could simply test for continuity or resistance before and after the clock spring to test it. Whenever I have an issue like this I will start at the beginning (in this case the steering wheel) and work my way down the line from there, testing everything as I go in sections. You could be dealing with two separate issues here, not necessarily just one. What I mean is I have seen corrosion on the contacts for the horn cause problems so while the airbag is off make sure to clean the contacts with something abrasive to make sure you’re getting a good connection. I hope this helps point you in the right direction. Please feel free to ask more questions and I’ll do whatever I can to help you.

Wondering if you have come across any issues with the airbag systems on the Dodge Caravans. I have a 2006 3.8L that the airbag light on the instrument panel keeps coming on and going off pretty routinely. Read some forums suggesting some connections under the seat, some suggesting clockspring. Also, I disconnected the battery while checking these items prior to an inspection. Now I need to go through a drive cycle so there will be some emissions details available for inspection. Do you know the correct drive cycle procedure for these vans?
@javosgarage
@javosgarage 4 жыл бұрын
@Simon Suso - I have had virtually no issues with the airbag system on these vans. I've never even had to replace a clock spring in one! To properly start diagnosing the SRS issue I would scan for codes. There are many variables that could be causing your issue but a quick scan can narrow that down for you. You can always check your connections under the seats but these connections have a locking tab to prevent them from coming loose. Is it possible? Sure, but I highly doubt it. Since you've disconnected your battery I would drive it a bit and see if your light returns, if it does then you can check for codes. Honestly, I don't have the exact drive cycle procedure handy. Whenever I've had to do this I basically drove the vehicle in combination of city and highway driving for about 15-20 minutes and that did the trick. What I can tell you is the road test of a "typical drive cycle" involves a highway and two road (or city) driving sessions. The first phase will be a short city driving test. In this first step, you’ll slowly accelerate to roughly 25 miles per hour. Anytime you stop the vehicle - for stop signs, traffic, or other reasons - come to a complete stop before proceeding. The second step involves a highway test. You’ll want to accelerate to about 55mph and hold that speed for at least five miles. The third road test is a return to city driving, where you repeat what you drove in the first city road test. I hope this helps you, let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for stopping by!

I recently had my clockspring replaced with a non-toyota oem part. The light is still on. The mechanic said my computer is bad. However when I brought it to toyota they said the computer is fine and the lock on the clockspring is broken/missing because I didn't buy a Toyota part. Is this something you have dealt with before?

Great video!! Is this the same process on a 2015 corolla? The hardest part of installing the new clock spring is when you made the 5 turns, I can't process it yet?
@javosgarage
@javosgarage Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry Gustavo, but I haven't done one of these in a 2015 so I can't give you an informed answer. I would guess they are similar in the function of the clockspring. The reason for the turns is to enable movement of the steering wheel in both the left and right directions that will either "tighten" or "loosen" the spring and still keep the wires intact. Wish I was of more help to you. Good luck on your project and thanks for stopping by.

I have a 08 Toyota Matrix the only problem I have is no horn I’ve checked the horn the relay the fuses no problems with any of those so I assumed it’s the clock spring I got one ordered do you think that’s the problem?
@javosgarage
@javosgarage 5 жыл бұрын
Nathan Randall - Let’s see if we can help get your horn working again. My first impression would be it does sound like a clock spring issue. Does the cruise control work or airbag light on? That could also point to the clock spring and it would be another way to verify that as the cause. HOWEVER, I would try to rule out other possibilities as I would hate to have you just throw parts at your problem. Here is how I would go about diagnosing the issue if it were me: 1. Verify the fuse is good with a tester, not just visual. 2. Swap out the relay with another one to verify the relay. 3. Make sure the ground to the horn is good. 4. Run a jumper straight to the horn to verify function. 5. Use a volt meter at the horn while having someone try activating it. I understand this is a bit redundant but it’s just more data. If my horn beeps when I jump it, the fuse and relay are good and my meter verifies no power then I would go back to the source of the “signal” where it all begins. I have seen corrosion at the contact (or pressure) points cause issues. I would clean those with something a bit abrasive to make sure your getting good contact and then try the horn again. There are three contact points once you remove the airbag and they are copper so that will make them easier to find. They are located top right and left with one on the bottom. If that doesn’t resolve your issue you have two options: 1. Replace the clock spring and see if it resolves the issue. 2. Start tracking down and testing the wiring to make sure that isn’t causing the issue. Hopefully this will help you get started. Let me know if I can help with other questions.

Hey on my 2010 Corolla S the Volume buttons Bluetooth Buttons on steering,Horn and Cruise Control buttons do not work. No Airbags Light or any light. Does that mean its the Clockspring for sure? Could it be a Fuse issue? And how important is using the exact force to tighten the Steering Wheel nut and screws? Help will be appreciated.
@javosgarage
@javosgarage 4 жыл бұрын
@TravelWithoutMoving - Thanks for stopping by. Honestly, I highly doubt this is a fuse issue. If the fuse to the radio were to be out then the entire radio would not operate, not just the steering wheel controls. Based on the symptoms you're describing I really believe your issue is the clock spring. It is the one central point all of these things have in common. So, if your radio is working except for the steering controls AND the horn is not working if it were me I would be replacing the clock spring. Now, before throwing parts at the problem I would: 1. Verify all of my fuses were good with a tester - this one from Harbor Freight is inexpensive and works great: www.harborfreight.com/computer-safe-automotive-logic-probe-63597.html 2. Have someone activate the horn for you while checking for power at the horn. If no power, run a jumper to the horn and verify it's function. 3. If all fuses are good and I can get the horn to work by jumping it then I'm replacing the clock spring. In regards to torquing the fasteners for the steering wheel and airbag, there is NO option but to properly tighten them to spec. We're talking about being able to steer and control the vehicle along with a charged airbag system. It has to be done right! If you don't own a torque wrench you can easily get a loaner for free at all the major auto parts stores. You can also buy one for $20 at Harbor Freight then you own the tool for future use: www.harborfreight.com/12-in-drive-click-type-torque-wrench-63882.html Hopefully this will help you get started. Let me know if I can help with other questions.
