Long notorious, the original death scene for young Alex Kintner in Jaws was far more extreme and graphic than that seen in the final cut of Spielberg's masterpiece.
Uber-fan, Kilt-Man, goes through what really happened, what was intended, what was shot and just why we never got to see this savage original sequence as initially planned.

Definitely. Whilst Verna Fields and John Williams justifiably won, Shaw was snubbed. It was 80 year old George Burns who got the Oscars for his role in The Sunshine Boys. We all know who deserved it more.

The bit where Cartwright jumps back at the gore and falls over the back of the banquette is in the Chestburster Multi-Angle feature. It looks like a genuine, unscripted on-set accident. The actors didn’t know where the blood hoses were positioned in the scene. They all knew something was going to come out Hurt’s chest. Back on topic, I’ve been long wanting to see the 1979 ABC television airing of JAWS get a home video release - it’s a missing piece of JAWS history - it was the way in which I first saw the film (in 1983), and I’ve a lot of nostalgia for it. The JAWS 2 expanded television airing would also be good.

3:30 - Actually, Pipit running across the beach to welcome Brody and Hooper home would have probably been seen as Brody and Hooper drowning at sea and arriving in the afterlife. Kinda like the scene at the end of The Iron Claw where Kerry Von Erich arrived in the afterlife and is greeted by all of his brothers.

@@Kilt-ManChris One thing about that scene from The Iron Claw. Not all of the brothers would have gone to heaven. Kerry and Michael committed suicide. That's a mortal sin. Dave and Jack would have gone to heaven. Their deaths were accidental. The others all would have ended up in the other place. It was a beautiful scene, and I love the sentiment. But for people as religious as the Von Erich's mom, the truth is that not all of her sons found their way into heaven.

@Thundarr100 Just so you know, but I promise I'm not trying to be rude. If you listen to a church series on KZbin called Unhook The Book, you'll see that all sins were forgiven when Jesus said "It is done". Not that we still shouldn't strive to be our best selves or try to teach others about the Bible, but God knew we could never measure up after the fall, which is why Jesus was born onto this Earth to begin with.

Spielberg would use the dolly/zoom Vertigo effect two more times in his career, in E.T., up on a hilltop looking down on Elliott's neighborhood, and in his unofficial co-directing of Poltergeist, when Mom Diane tries to venture down what seems to become a neverending hallway to get to her children's bedroom door.

So glad you covered this myth. Indeed, we actually ended up seeing MORE of the shark than Alves wanted to show. I've lost count how many times people have mistakenly thought that the "original" scene showed the shark much more during the Kintner attack but was cut because it was too gory. On top of what you already argued, it would have made the pier scene where the shark is completely hidden redundant. To show the shark fully in one scene then completely hide it again in a following scene would have been ridiculous. For the Kintner scene we just see a bit but not enough. Only when we've watched it repeatedly on video, DVD and Blu Ray can we tell what it is. At the cinema for the first time, we didn't. People watching it now for the first time still say "what was that?". 😉 I have always assumed Brody wasn't fixated on Alex when Alex was taken and probably looking more at Michael, so he didn't see the fins clearly but he did see Alex erupt in a fountain of blood and that's what shocked him. Cheers. Loved the Quaver attack. 👍
@Kilt-ManChris
@Kilt-ManChris 3 ай бұрын
The Quaver/Wolfman attack genuinely worked SO much better in rehearsal! Aye, the pier scene would, indeed, be redundant. Many thanks 🦈🦈🦈💥👍👍👍

@@Kilt-ManChris Especially as the pier scene was the first shark incident filmed by Spielberg, in May '74, and with a deliberately unseen shark. Id like to know what they originally did for the Kintner scene, seeing as the pick up shot by Alves in Katama Bay was filmed in the September while the rest of it was filmed in June. Was it just the fountain of blood. Must have initially had something else in mind on top of just that. Hope you enjoyed eating the quavers 😂.

Not buying "the sun wasn't right." This was the movie's money shot, its "chestburster." Alex's death scene is never filmed, only glimpsed in the awesome storyboards - he's blown out of the water floatie and all and like the footage of so many seals during Shark Week he goes into the shark's mouth and is crunched. I think he walked away from it because he wanted that coveted PG rating for a much wider release, which he got. But lets be frank: JAWS was never filmed. This movie is not the novel in any way, shape or form. The novel is blacker than David Finch's "Se7en." Everybody is guilty... Brodie's wife starts an affair w/ Hooper (which would've been an R rating - adultery/sex), the reason the mayor is adamant the beach stay open is because the town is financed by the Mafia running gambling dens (he flees the town when they have to close it), and Brodie is a cuck stewing with insecurities about his younger good-looking wife but also fantasizing about the nubile young girls on the beach. Brodie tries to kill Hooper on the boat and "accidentally" shoots him in the head when the shark has him in his mouth. The shark IS Brodie, Brodie IS the shark in the novel, same way the birds in Hitchcock's THE BIRDS are the psychic id of the clingy mother played by Jessica Tandy - manifestations of her fear her son will leave her for Melanie (played by Tippi Hedren). In the opening Brodie is fantasizing about the bouncing breasts in bikinis of girls on the beach and then we cut to Chrissy's (first victim) thorax being discovered by the deputy and the author notes one breast is sagging and deflated on the torso "as flat as a flower pressed in a memory book." Notice how Spielberg doesn't show the thorax (which can't be explained away with "well the shark didn't work") - again, they want the PG rating. All of this is typically explained away with "Well it's more horrifying because your imagination blah blah..." No, I assure you, showing it is more horrifying. Pauline Kael wrote the best review of JAWS and she called it a comedy, not just any comedy, but "funny in a Woody Allen way" - which it is. JAWS still waits for its director. And Spielberg be damned if he lets that happen: bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3670649/steven-spielberg-reportedly-still-determined-prevent-jaws-reboot-happening/

So, they shot the first bit of footage on the east coast then thought they could cut in footage shot on the west coast with the sun setting. That makes zero sense.

No. All the Alex Kintner footage was filmed off the beaches of Martha's Vineyard. Spielberg had completed all principal photography and gone back to LA where he shot the Ben Gardner's head sequence in a swimming pool. Joe Alves stayed in Martha's Vineyard to film the Kintner scene - which then got cut.

Okay but didn't you say they were trying to get the shot as the sun was setting?

I listened closely in case you had news of JAWS 3D blu ray transfer of the 3D elements they have already processed. One of us will get that news. I don't mind which of us gets it, I just wanna hear it! O God I hope they don;t recruit you-know-whos to make a new commentary... *RIGBY* So now look at that, the shark's nose - - *LYONS* Yep, yep, the nose, that's right - - *RIGBY* - - actually breaks the 4th wall - - *LYONS* The wall! *RIGBY* - - & my word you really do feel that bite now - - *LYONS* Ouch! *RIGBY* And look at that, as Hooper's lowered in the cage, you get a much more visceral idea - - *LYONS* Visceral exactly, uh huh, yep, I feel it! absolutely - - *RIGBY* - - of the risk he's taking - - *LYONS* The risk! indeed, yeah! the risk! *RIGBY* - - because now it really looks like the threat could attack from any side - - *LYONS* Any side at all, exactly! behind, frontways, either side, yep! *RIGBY* And of course the other factor - - *LYONS* The other factor yes! *RIGBY* - - the other factor - - *LYONS* The other factor, exactly! the other one! *RIGBY* - - the other thing to factor into the 3D mix, into the soup one might say - - *LYONS* - - in the drink yes! the factor in the mix as you say! *RIGBY* - - we might even venture to say into the soupy drink, & indeed why not? - - *LYONS* Indeed! why not? why on earth not?!

There already is a Jaws 3D transfer it came out like 5 years ago. Thats all the blu-ray that comes with the 4k release at the end of July is, its just a reprint of the old blu-ray where the 3D version is a special feature. Its not 3D on the 4k disc

It's a bad movie but still enjoyable. And the 3D is actually very good with quite a huge depth of field and some genuinely impressive pop-out FX. It's definitely the best way to view this installment.

@@lutherheggs451 Just to be clear, I;m talking about wanting a blu ray 3D transfer of the original 1975 JAWS, not a sequel. 3D elements already exist because the original JAWS had a 3D theatrical release a cpl of years ago.

@@Kilt-ManChris I missed seeing Jaws and Jaws 2 in the theater since I was a little kid. Though the novel Jaws was the first grown up book I read when I was 6. I did watch Jaws every day for a while on VHS when I was 11. Then finally Jaws 3D came out in theaters and you know it didn't really matter that it wasn't the greatest movie, the 3D was pretty amazing, much better than anything I saw years laters in the 2000's. And it was Jaws, music and water stunts and photography it was definitely a spectacle. Now Jaws: The Revenge despite its beautiful locale and great actors and fairly decent character continuity was more of a disappointment but still acceptable summer movie fare.
