I ran out of water on Spetses, a much smaller island, while trying to take a short cut back to the coast road. That was a very big mistake. Every time I came out of each mini valley, I thought I would see the road, and every time I realised how lost I was. As panic set in, I got more thirsty and it was very scary. The way to the coast was impassable and I had to turn around and go back the way I came, hoping I was not completely lost. I have never been more scared of bringing about my own demise and very quickly. This happened in the middle of the day on the tiny island of Spetses. I was about the same age as this boy and I had taken a litre of water with me on my trip. Luckily I had a rental bicycle with me, so once I got back to the road, I could return to town relatively quickly. That night I had sun stroke, threw up, I was shivering with cold and my skin was on fire, so I couldn't have a sheet touch me. Always take far more water than you think you need, and do not ration water. When you start to get dehydrated one of the main results is confusion. You need to stay sharp to get out of the situation.

I had a family holiday to the Island of Kos when i was about 13yrs old. My brother and me hired mountain bikes and went for a ride. We stopped at the bottom of a small mountain similar to those in the footage of Tenerife. We decided to try climb it. After a couple hours or so we were both shattered and realised we needed to make our way back down. By the time we got back down i was shaking from exhaustion due to the heat and dehydrated, and struggled to make it to the nearest cafe to get water and food. So i can easily imagine the trouble he could get in after drinking alcohol and partying for a few nights. This is almost certainly a case of a young guy making poor choices and severely underestimating how quickly the elements can take you.

If Jay was walking in the wrong direction, he can be anywhere. He could not survive without water, or food. That is not terrain anyone should walk into without proper knowledge of the area, and especially without provisions. He was not prepared for that environment. He had to become disoriented, and fell.
