Beautiful job! I had a 5000 sq ft sauna factory where we used inland red cedar and redwood exclusively. When that dust gets in your lungs it never breaks down so dust collection is imperative. We hired a professional company to design and build the system. They used two 10 hp motors each with its own cyclone that even shook down the cylindrical paper filters every so many hours to keep them clean. The motors, cyclones and collection boxes were all housed inside a metal cabinet that was 10’h x 6’w x 3’ d. All piping to each station was reinforced galvanized metal starting at the machine at 12” diameter and being tapered down to 4” at the blast gates to keep the suction even over the long runs and all metal to eliminate any static electricity. Dynamite uses sawdust to increase the explosion power so grounding is very important! They had to be emptied once a day but it was a small price to pay for your lungs!

Great Job! I have my PVC dust collector set up and used the foil tape on the inside of the connection and then wrapped it around the seam for a seal, originally intending to run a insulated wire along the piping and then ground the system to a connection (which was one of the bolts that held the framing to the cement slab) to make the ground. I have used my Clear view Cyclone setup for over 3 yrs and I have NEVER gotten a static electric shock from touching any part of the system while it is in use! Nice work on your installation, Very Professional, and I am still getting used to wearing a respirator, course I have to wear glasses, and that bothers me more than anything, I am thinking of a tilt down fresh air face shield unless that fogs up and gives me a problem. Hate wasting 2-3 hundred dollars for fresh air but sometimes you have to do what you have to do!

Regardless negative comments that is the best way to keep your shop the safest as possible for you. Can't wait to see you back in the action. Have a great day Jay!!!

Jay very detailed, very informative and GREAT video - I know the risk my elder brother was a woodwork teacher and died a couple of years back at 71 - healthy except his long were stuffed WHY - he wasn't aware and perhaps ignored the risk of dust as an apprentice carpenter as back in the 60's and 70's - then spent the rest of his life trying to avoid dust. My view is you have probably saved lives - ignore the idiots - great job I going to doi similar in my new shop - THANK YOU

Looks great Jay. I installed the clear vue when I built my shop. I was not having difficulties, but did not want to develop any issues that could be prevented. The greatest add-on for me was an alarm for when the bin fills up. I have never had to clean out my filters from a dump due to a full bin. The bin fills up quicker than I expected, so I am sure I would have let it overflow at some point without the alarm. Also, I have not had an issue with static electricity on the sewer pipe ducts.

I have a sinus condition too and built my collection system with 4 inch PVC pipe. I didn't believe the stuff on KZbin that said you needed a static ground if you used PVC, so I didn't use it. Guess what....you need it or over time the static will cause the fine dust to build up on the inside of the pipes clogging them and having a potential for fire. I used a fine bare braided wire (18 guage I believe) and wrapped it around the outside of the pipe in long wraps. Using crimp on connectors I attached the wires with SPACKS screws at the pipe connectors, The screws were just long enough for the point to protrude through the inside so it didn't catch dust but would pick up the static. The other end was grounded to the dust collector motor. This has stopped the dust buildup from static. By joining the wires at the pipe connectors, I can pull the pipes apart and reconfigure if I want. I used foil tape to make the connection seals like you did, so when I added a new machine, I had no trouble connecting it in.

Hi Jay, you're correct about the two lines at the table saw. Looking at the area of the tubes, 6"=28.3 while the 4"+2" = 15.7. You could partial open the gate at the planer and see what happens. Good job over all and a lot less clean up during/after a project.

I have just recently got into woodworking and have used a couple of shop vacs on different machines. In addition I run a fan that blows across the shop out through 1 of two 6 ft barn doors. Even with my short time into woodworking I have already experienced some discomfort from the dust (your body telling you something). So I can fully understand somebody wanting to "really" get after dust control. There are some shop tools I really want to acquire ... but my next expenditure HAS to be a good dust control system.

Looks like a great system you have there. I have never worked in a commercial furniture shop that didn't have me covered in dust head to toe by days end, and my own home shop is appalling. This video may have motivated me enough to at least fix up the dust extraction on my panel saw which only has a severely choked 4" hose connected to it at the moment. Great vid, thanks.

Great job on the install and doing necessary homework before the project Jay. It's ridiculous that so many people are busting your balls on what you should and shouldn't do. It looks like you have a system that works well for what you are trying to achieve. The problem with the internet and message forums, is that so many people regurgitate information/false information and do not speak of facts or experience. If the man wants to use 6in diameter pipes and the collector can handle it, then why not? Looks like an improvement to me. Awesome work Jay!!!

Brian Ford Hello Brian, I'm new to this and cogitating a shop collection system. What's the logic behind 6" vs 4" for chip and dust vs chip only because I was pretty crap at fluid mechanics in college....mr Bernoulli confused me terribly 🤔
@PBMS123
@PBMS123 6 жыл бұрын
@@macduff1964a I don't see how a 6" collects fine dust better than a 4" system. I did mechanical engineering, with specialities in turbine/jet propulsion. On the same system, a 6" system will mean less air velocity than a 6", because for the same flow rate, a large area means a slower velocity, meaning some particles may escape. For a 4" on the same system not only will it have a higher velocity, because of the Bernoulli principle, we know the pressure will be lower, and what is a vacuum, but a low pressure. This will mean there will be a greater pressure differential to the ambient air on each dust particle, causing a greater force to be induced onto each particle. It's important to choose the best diameter for your dust collector.

Others, all of them, have said that it is one great set, expertly set up, and can only say the same. Great work, and a fine display. Quite ambitious for a low level production output. One definitely needs to collect the dust and the chips, but in the end can one ever be free of dust and work with wood? Fine sawing and sanding will never be fully solved until the wood working machinery is redesigned to that end. Thank you. Subscribed.

Awesome Job! Noticed that the dust doesn't drop down into the bin immediately. Some times this indicates that there might be a leak between the cone and the dust bin or the hose is going in the opposite direction of the air flow inside the cone. Great video and great graphic design. One recommendation I have is your blast gates are installed upside down. You’ll find when closed and tightening the holding screw down it will push the gate away from the seal. Won’t make a huge difference on a powerful unit but does add leakage.

Stuff the haters Jay. It seems for the most part people online appreciate what you've done here. Anyone arguing against the need for proper dust collection either has no form of timber allergy or hasn't been around long enough to see the side affects that come with a set of lungs full with decades of fine dust. There's always someone who will argue and who 'knows better'.... Yet I don't see them making any videos or trying to help the general woodworking community. Great job bro and at the end of the day, if your happy with the end result, then that's what counts. Now you can get back to building awesome stuff :)

Jay, I like your thinking on dust collection. Mine looks very similar to yours and I too have the green and white mixture of pipe. I'm running an Oneida 3 hp and I am getting about 1200 cfm thru the pipe at the end of the run which is about 55 feet. Ive done the same thing as you when I use a 4" dust port. I also make sure another 4" is open next to it that feeds into the 6" at the same place. Otherwise when the airflow enters the 6" pipe, the airflow will slow down. A 6" pipe has a little over 28 sq inches of cross section whereas a 4 inch has only about 12.5, so two 4" pipes will almost fill a 6" pipe. Keep up the great videos.

Damn Jay that is an impressive system! Dust is the enemy. I don't think the trolls in the comments realize that just because you're not sensitive to the dust or type of wood now doesn't mean that you couldn't develop an issue down the way. I think that you have done a very good job setting everything up for dust collection. I would suggest that you consider carefully before settling on a design for the over arm dust collection. I made a parallel arm with counterweight to lower the blade guard down but find that it still interferes when making cuts on taller pieces. Mine can raise out of the way of most cuts, but requires partial disassembly for others. I look forward to seeing how you set yours up. I am running 4" both into the saw cabinet as well as the overarm. Perhaps one day my dust collection setup will look as tidy as yours. Well done!

I use a 4" flex hose drop to a Shark Guard for over the blade dust collection with my CV1800. Works really well until you need to shave the edge off a board, but this would be a problem with any over the blade guard. I also remove it when I need to make a cut within about 3" to the fence, or for crosscuts. So I'm almost never collecting all the dust at the table saw. Oh well. Let me know if you'd like to see a pic of this setup.

If you go to a "rea;" supply house for ductwork you will find some fittings like "take-offs" and "Boots" that can be very handy. I have made good use of "End Boots" in several places, such as one mounted on the side of the bandsaw where your current 2" hose is. Does an excellent job. The round to rectangular aspect of these would also work well on your jointer.

You may want to consider fabricating a widow for the 55 gal drum. It will take the guesswork out of knowing when it needs to be emptied. You may also want to consider making a flexible dust catcher for the miter saw that hooks up to the saws dust port and extends to the fence and then attach a small hose to the saws dust extraction nozzle. Similar to what you have for the table saw. Also wondering if you'll be grounding the piping or if it needs to be. Nice work!

Hey Jay. Great video. I am looking to make something similar. About your table saw hose being reduced. It may put a slight strain on the system but if its starving the collector of air you have two ports that can add air to the piping. Open the planer ducts and let it draw air in that way. I just saw when this video was made so you've probably already figured it out lol.

Jay, you mentioned the location of the blast gates as a way to minimize the volume in the active lines. But there's another great reason for grouping the gates. It gives you only two control points to work from to control the whole system. That makes it easier to recover from forgetting to close a gate then having to figure out which unwanted gate is open.

You could get a supplied free air pump from Bullard and the bubble hood and then use a condenser mic while wearing it. Has a huge dust protection factor and comfortable to wear. That's what did.

How many tools can you realistically use at the same time without losing (adequate) suction? I know that’s a weird question considering you can only use one, maybe two tools at a time, but just curious. Would be interesting to know a target CFM for folks designing for their shop. Like me!

I think its ok to leave the black tube going to the top of the table saw. The 4 inch at the bottom should pick up more dust and do more work. I would understand the concern about the strain on the dust collector if you didnt have the bottom 4 inch connected. Awesome system!

Is there enough room between the separator and the barrel to set the barrel on a furniture dolly? Just thinking that when that barrel gets full it will be a pain to move unless it is already on wheels.

May seem like an odd request, but I'd like to see any tips on emptying dust collection. Didn't see what you're using for the collection itself, but I have a cyclone with a 60 gal drum at the moment. The easiest way to empty it out so far for me has been using a dust pan to shovel it out into a bag. I'm thinking about making a thin ring of some sort to line the drum with a bag and keep it from getting sucked in.

Great setup on the dust collection I had a thought couldn't you use the same Flexi blue hose as you have for the band saw on the circle saw this would allow the same flexibility as you have with the smaller hose allowing you to move it up out of the way?

Hi, Jay nice system. I was surprised to see how much suction you have when you ran the whole line at 6-inches. Good job. Personal thought is to keep the small suction line at your table saw top. It is nice that you can get it completely out of the way when needed. With 4-inch at the bottom and 2 (roughly) at the top should keep working great. But your shop and you adjust as required. ONE NOTE FOR YOU. Air flow does create static. Air with debris creates more and can cause fires and other such problems in time. You are correct about plastic not being conductive by itself, however static travel over not through. Grounding is a good idea. Simply run a ground lead from pipe/duct to a wall plug and attach at plate mounting screw at various locations. With the lead pipe side just attach with 1 to 2-inch screw penetrating into the pipe. Now grounded on outside and air inside, Simple! I really enjoy your site, keep at it and let the haters flow off your back. You are doing good, keep it up. Sam

If you want to add a little extra on that miter saw try out the saw stache from fast cap. I used it on my table saw holes and it seemed to help. Also when are you going to get a new planer?

30 years ago, I installed a 6" PVC dust collection system in my shop. Not knowing if all of the concern about static electricity explosion was myth or not, it was simple enough to run a #6 bare copper wire the length of the main truck and then take it to a real earth ground. Cheap insurance, and you could even retrofit it to existing. There is no debate, in m y opinion, to the need for dust collection.

Great job explaining the details of your collection system. I know this was mentioned somewhere in your other videos but I would like a detailed explanation about why your using PVC instead of a flexible hose with a grounding wire in it. All the books I read say to ensure the system is grounded to reduce the chances of static buildup, yet you do not mention anything about running a wire or grounding the system. I have a huge Oneida Cyclone unit I want to install in my shop and I have been following your videos for information on how to do this. So your rational will help me decide on whether to go with PVC or flex hose.

Does the mitre saw have a top guard suction port ? if so you could put a piece of flex hose that dangles into the 6 inch, the venturi effect may remove the dust that currently seems to make it around the blade.

Shame about the idiots and nonsensicalness comments. Your shop, your health so go with the best you can get. Not only but also less cleaning up, from the dust that does not make it into the system. Every few days of working in the shed I have to clean and sweep up, so the less you have to do the more quality work time. Thanks Jay.

How did you secure the vertical pipe that comes down to the table saw? Did you cement them together? Those vertical ones are tricky cause without a few screws they can separate due to gravity.

Are you planning on grounding the pipe? I just put in 180' 6" pvc (same as what you have). I had read numerous article that dust fires are a farce in a non-industrial application so I didn't bother......until I got zapped. Pain in the butt to do but it will keep the inside of your pipe walls from clinging dust from static, especially MDF.Cheers

Awesome system Jay, I'm definitely jelly! I wonder if a roundover after flush trimming the ply on the mitre saw / jointer shrouds might help slightly? But I guess if there's that little dust left over as it is, it might not be necessary. Thanks for the detailed vids!
