Hi Jayda. I’ve just spent 2 hours on google and Pinterest looking at images to crochet into blankets ! If there are large areas that are the same color would you ever combine the squares to make a much larger square where you can. I’m wondering if this would throw everything off when attaching them all.
@JaydaInStitches5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kathleen, it could make things a little more complicated, and you might also lose the pixelated look (the individual squares give the design a balance)...Having said that, experimentation can be a lot of fun and you never know what sort of new look you might stumble across :)

this is great what if I want to make a very smaller picture? like small for the end of a scarf? never used graph paper so not sure if they make the square bigger
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
+valerieval The squares on the graph paper just represent the individual square you make - which can be any size you choose. If you're trying to make something tiny for the end of a scarf you might have better luck doing crochet cross stitch... haven't covered that in a tutorial yet, but it's best for making pixelated pictures in very small spaces :)

Hi jayda, I'm considering making a graphgan with some marvel designs I found, they have already been turned to 8 bit which makes things easier for me being a beginner lol, I'm trying to figure out the size for a double bed or bigger here in the uk and your formula seems to confuse me every time I try, I would very much appreciate any help you can give me before I start because I don't want to start and get stuck
@JaydaInStitches7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristy, we have a video that you might find helpful for that. You'll find it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXTTgKVpfa2Ie6s You want to start with the length of the blanket you want to make (so top to bottom), then divide that measurement by the number of squares that run top to bottom in your 8 bit design. Round up to the nearest whole measurement (so if it's 24.7 cm, use 25 cm). Then you want to make a granny square (or a single crochet square like I did in this video) that fits as close as possible to that measurement. Then, just follow your graph and you're off! These are so much fun to make, I'm currently working on another one using tiny grannies myself :)

did you find making the squares this way easier than granny squares? i have wanted to make something like this for a while, but sewing granny squares arent fun for me and take a long time. this looks great!!
@JaydaInStitches7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kristan! I've made blankets in both manners and really, it's going to be a lot of attaching however you look at it LOL. Aesthetically speaking, you have fewer spaces or 'gaps' using the sc square vs the mini granny squares so you get more of a solid image this way, which is why I like it. But you can check out my 2016 calendar blanket, I used mini granny squares for that and the overall look (while just a pixilated blast of colour) was really nice and I don't feel that you notice the spaces too much. You can find the finished blanket here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5e3m3-Np7Gnhas (there's a nice long pan of the whole blanket near the end)

I'm still a beginner and I was wondering what would you recommend that would be good for a first project?
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
snowy Aj Oooh! Well I can recommend two right off the bat - the basic Granny Square (try out my tutorial here kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZCYn3ymjcxrha8) OR, if you want something a little smaller, you can practice your single crochet with a dishcloth here kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYipemCJZ7x_jZY. Both of these tutorials will allow you to create simple squares and if you wanted to make something like my Super Mario Blanket, you can use either of these as a start! Plus, they get you comfortable using the single crochet stitch and the double crochet stitch (as well as slip knots, chains and slip stitches) and you'll be able to elaborate on your new techniques and branch off into simple little toys soon too :) Good luck and have fun!

I'd love to make a Creeper blanket for my son's upcoming birthday. I'm a bit unsure how this works. How would I know how big to draw it on the graph paper? I understand the equation, assuming you add squares for around the character. Just not certain how to determine how big to draw it (or any character) on the graph paper. Did I miss that in your video?
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
+Barbara Greer Hi Barbara, I copied a pixelated image from the internet onto graph paper so I could count how many squares I needed of each colour. From there I did the math to figure out how big to make them (based on the overall dimensions I wanted for my little wall hanging). I recommended the 8 or 16 bit images because they use the fewest squares to create a recognizable image. Minecraft translates really well into this format :) Have fun!
@aliasjtenecade465510 жыл бұрын
Quick question Jayda. What color yarn did you use for his face and hands?
@JaydaInStitches10 жыл бұрын
Tene Cade Hi Tene! I had this light peach colour kicking around the craft room. It was a ball someone had given me and it had no label when I got it. I think the original NES Mario skin-tone was a little more orange than peach, but I liked the way the light peach colour looked with the rest of the chosen colours :)

Thanks!! I found some beige/khaki colored yarn in one of my supply bags. Hopefully it turns out ok.

How did you sew them together. I'm in the process of making a panda for my mom for her birthday coming up and I have this fear of the yarn I use to sew it together being seen as a flaw in the picture I have watched your granny square joining video would the whip stitch show through
@JaydaInStitches5 жыл бұрын
Hi Phoenix, I used the whip stitch for this blanket. I used the same yarn colour as the blocks I was sewing together. If the blocks were two different colours, I simply made sure the sewing yarn was at least the same colour as one of the blocks. It doesn't show if you keep your stitches small and tight :)
@leigh38188 жыл бұрын
Jayda, thank you for the video! Quick question though...how do I sew two different colored squares together without the colors showing?

Jayda! You just made my brain explode in a completely amazing way.... I just got hit with the inspiration stick haha, so thank you!! I'm wondering if you have a tutorial I can't find about single crocheting around the corners for the borders... I can go back and forth "dishcloth style", if you will, but can't figure out how to get it to turn without warping... Also, one more question... If my work keeps rolling at the edges am I using too much tension or is there another mistake I am making?! Thanks so much.. Haha, I've just spent three hours with your videos! X.x lol!
@JaydaInStitches10 жыл бұрын
Hi May D! My goal is to warp the grey matter of crafty folks everywhere... lol!! firstly, my single crochet dishcloth tutorial does explain single crocheting around the outside of your work better than I can explain it here. ..BUT you only have to do that for the border on the whole finished work, not the mini squares. Second, if your little squares are rolling at the edges thats because you're awesome and your tension is likely computer perfect! If you look closely at the piles of little squares in my video, you'll notice that they're all curling at the edges too. When you sew them all together, lay them out all right sides up, but alternate them bottom row up, bottom row down. This will keep the warping balanced and then non-existent when the border is on. What image did you use? 😊

How many squares down and across should it be for a good size blanket?
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
Samantha Earley Hi again! It depends on how large you make the squares. You could, for example, use the same pattern I did for Mario, but make all the individual squares as granny squares and make them all about 6 inches square, then add a nice border to the whole thing when you have it make and that would definitely be a BIG blanket!! You can take the measurements of a blanket size you like, then divide the length by the number of squares high and the width by the number of squares wide and that will give you a rough idea of how big to make your individual squares :) (p.s. i love math, can't you tell? LOL)

Hi Jayda! This is awesome! I'm currently making a red vs blue one :D I'm joining as I go and I was wondering which method you used to stitch the squares together? I started using the single crochet method (along the right side) and it's got a slight Ridge (thankfully not too obvious) and was wondering how to make it look more "seamless"?
@JaydaInStitches6 жыл бұрын
Hi! I usually sew all my squares together (if I'm not using the join as you go method) I find it takes up less yarn, doesn't leave a ridge and you can sort of hide your little stitches if your yarn colours don't match completely :)

Is there a video on how you join the squares together please try
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
Sarah Barton Hi Sarah, I explain in the video how I put them together, they're just sewn together in strips using the same coloured yarn - for a more in depth video on joining squares you can check out my joining granny squares (the method of sewing is the same :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZ-9o59qi9iZn5o&lc=z12etno42trgyzu2w235vrsyxvy2xpquj

so how do you know what hook to use... did you just use a 5.5 or could you had used something else... because I'm trying to make something that requires my squares to be 7cm but I'm not sure what size I should use
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
+satorni1432 Technically, you can use any hook size (as long as it works nicely with the yarn you chose) you can just change up how many stitches/rows you put into each square. Best thing to do is experiment. Make 1 square and then measure it. If it's too big, remove some stitches/rows, if it's too small, increase your stitches/rows. Have fun! :)

hi - can you show a video on how you joined it ? or do you have one posted ?
@JaydaInStitches10 жыл бұрын
Hi again Carla! The "How to Join Your Granny Squares" details how you can sew your squares together. Try to use yarn that matches at least ONE of the coloured blocks and I recommend sewing it rather than crocheting them together because typically you want a flat look here. I've linked that tutorial in the comment box :) Thanks!

@JaydaInStitches8 жыл бұрын
+aleusha drake That should work just fine! I made these little squares using the single crochet technique, but I'm currently making another using small grannies. I have a granny square tutorial you mind find helpful if you want to give grannies another go :) You can find a link to it in the description box above :)

What color yarns are they? thanks.
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
+OGSHADOWSTAR Most of it is Red Heart Super Saver, I used a bright blue (like a cobolt), bright red, black, white and light brown but the 'flesh' tone was a little trick, I just happened to have an old ball of it lying around, without a label. I would recommend printing off a picture in colour (or just having it on your phone) and head off to the yarn store and compare the skeins to your picture and make decisions there. You might like the way some colours look with each other once you have them all in your hands :)

OMG it looks great. I want to make it for a pillow. I guess I just have to decrease the square size.
@JaydaInStitches8 жыл бұрын
Yes! you can also use a smaller hook and thin yarn and that will help make things smaller too :)

How do yo crochet them all together?….

Hi Angi, I sewed them together, uses less yarn and you can hide the stitching 😊

I have a question if i decide to do it in single crochet how do i do the squares? I just make the squares if the size i want then i sew em together? :/
@JaydaInStitches9 жыл бұрын
+Niidara You have to do a little reverse math (figure out how big you want the finished blanket, and divide it by the number of squares down one side), but you could also make a square a size you like and then work them all the same size and just let the finished blanket size end up being whatever it ends up being! I have a basic tutorial on single crochet (in which you make a dishcloth, but that's a square!), and it's linked in the description box for this tutorial :) For the little squares I made here, I recommend 5 or 6 stitches by 5 or 6 rows :)

Jayda InStitches thx a lot!! Ill watch the tutorial and ill follow the rows u just told me. Thx again : and btw nice vids :3

hiI was wondering if you would have a crochet pattern for a batman blanket
@JaydaInStitches8 жыл бұрын
+joan nash Hi Joan, I haven't done one myself, but you could use this concept and select a simple batman pixel image (use google it in google images). The batman symbol would make a neat blanket image too!

So how many squares of each color did you use?
@JaydaInStitches4 жыл бұрын
If you're following a graph, just count up the like-coloured squares row by row so you know how many you need. I think I used more white than anything else!
