How To Make A Noodle Board Stove Cover

As a novice woodworker, I learned a lot from your video. I recently tried my hand at making a stove cover. However, it turned out very raw and not as smooth and professional as yours. Hi was wondering if I should buy a 1x12 board or just a long 1x6 and rip it down to make this, also I don't have a lot of cash right now but was thinking of getting a dewalt cordless planer, is this the right tool to level out the boards after cutting so they join and lye flat? probably will use it for a table top also Thank You :)

I think you did a good job at explaining. I was wondering if you could share the link to the handles? I can only find one kind that has the screws on top, as opposed to the bottom ones. I prefer the top mount screw handles.

I can't find the link to the exact one...but I am pretty sure I got it at Menards. It is a pull handle. 1x12 are typically better and cheaper when you cut them in half at your table saw…just a thought to save a few bucks.

Curious how you keep the seams on the main board from becoming not flat? Had two that were perfect, sanded, assembled and finished, and now there is an edge on each board across the top. Thanks!

We actually don’t try to keep them perfect. If you are wanting that, you would want to glue and biscuit joint probably. We just go with it the way it is.

Question: How do you keep the boards from warping? We've made 2 of them in the past few days, and they're straight when put together. Laid flat overnight, and by the next afternoon, there's a bow in it. Any suggestions?

Hey Shelly, I ran into that a couple of times when I was using 1X6's from Home Depot. I think it was because the lumber wasn't dry enough or acclimated to my area. When I started using 1X12's from my local lumber yard, I never had that issue again.

Hey Patrick, you could literally make this as nice and expensive as you wanted! I’ve seen people make them out of stuff like walnut and maple. However, I’ve always used regular big box 1Xs. So normally just pine. I do try to pick out the best looking boards, or else pay the extra for select boards.

From my experience, if it doesn't lie flat, it is usually due to warped material. Were you using lumber you milled and dried or something from the store? Too much moisture is usually the issue.

Hi Jay. Just curious…Is there a reason you did not seal the board? Is sealing not necessary when you spray paint? If you were to seal it , would you apply it before or after the vinyl?

Most paint does not require an additional topcoat. The paint itself is the "sealer". If you were staining it, then yes, you would clearcoat it, then install the vinyl. The vinyl does not stick well if you try installing vinyl on oil-based stain without sealing first.

Oh, one more question.. since he has already put the poly on can I “stencil” on top of it instead of using vinyl? And should I use chalk paint or acrylic? Thanks again!!

@@tammy1317 Vinyl will work great on top of the poly, but yes, you can paint over the poly. I would probably recommend using acrylic. I think chalk paint will show scratches more.

Sure. Go to a store like Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, or even a local lumber store, and tell them you are looking for a decent looking 1X12 or 1X6. They should help you find what you are needing. Usually, that will be a common pine board. If those don't look good (holes or bad knots) ask to see some select pine boards. Sometimes, the smaller, local lumber stores are a bigger help. Of course, their prices might be a tad more. But if you are starting out...it might be worth it to pay a bit more if they offer more guidance. Hope this helps!

a good woodworker would have edge glued the boards & used screws not nails. it appears the boards are already warping. the vinyl does look good.

Thanks for commenting. While I do not claim to be a great woodworker. I have made a whole bunch of these this same way and they are still holding up great. However, edge gluing the main board would be great if that is the look that you are going for. If I were to make a higher quality noodle board from something like oak...then I would probably edge glue and biscuit join the panel. :)

@@malonecustomdesigns Jay, I’ll admit that not all videos are intended to be instructional, but you’re explaining in great detail how to do something which nobody else can do. If you want to show respect for your audience, then you can’t just display a bunch of very difficult procedures. You’ve got to keep it simple, start at the beginning, explain what you’re doing, and encourage your viewers to also give it a try. In my opinion, you’re bragging when you should be teaching. On the next project, make something easy, which your viewers can also make. You’ll gain a lot more fans.

@@ronliebermann Hey, thanks for your reply. The thing is that none of what I did is classified as difficult procedures. I have literally been woodworking for only a year. So if I can do this...anyone with the tools can do it. I also explained in the video that if you don't have all of the tools that I have...then you can do it without. There is nothing that I did in this video that you couldn't accomplish with basic woodworking tools. This is a video for someone trying to build a noodle board. It wasn't a video for a dinning room craft. While I might have those types of videos in the future, this one was for a basic noodle board, which does require some tools. Also, I explained multiple times that this isn't the only way or necessarily the best way...this is the way that I have learned that works for me. Sorry if you felt that I was bragging in any way. That wasn't my intention, I don't even have anything to brag about lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Just keep your projects simple so that people can copy what they see you do. I’m sure they’ll love it. So next time, make something easy, like a Piper Cub. :)
