Central Asia was highly hellenised even before Alexander arrived there. May be few Greek central asian settlers just migrated into India

After the Ionian Revolt, the Persians settled a lot of Greeks from Western Anatolia to Bactria. The Ionian settlers also probably gave rise to the term in India for Greeks called Yavanna.
@king_halcyon4 ай бұрын
That's just false. The Bactrian cities probably hosted some exiled Greeks (exiled by Persian overlords). There was a considerable minority, which is why the Greco-Bactrian Empire was born soon after death of Alexander, after the Greeks became the rulers of the land (through Iranian intermediaries), and the pre existing Greek settlement allowed a quick consolidation of their rule over the region, which already was at the centre of great movements, including proto-Pathans, Saka, Gandharans and other Indo-Iranian groups. However, the Greeks were always a minority and didn’t leave any genetic trace (the supposed "Mediterranean marker" of Iranians comes from very early settlers). It's likely they may have maintained some degree of endogamy and cultural barrier, for which Greek influence was small and trickled slowly (it was only by the end of the Indo-Greek era, during late Indo-Scythian and Turanian kingdons contemporary to the nascent Gupta kingdom that the Hellenistic naming of the seven days based on the visible seven solar system bodies [ *classical planets* ] becomes common in northwestern India, and then spreads to rest of India under Gupta imperial rule).

Very interesting discussion. I read a book based on historical accounts written in Hindi by a traveller in 19th century, Rahul Sankrittayan. Rahul Sankrittayan was an expert on Brahmi-lipi, interested in archeology. He discovered clay tablets in Baishali, north Bihar. The clay tablets were written by an individual contemporary to Lord Buddha. The tablets mentioned about existence of Yavan or Greek origin people in north-western border of India whose descendants created settlements within north-India along the banks of Ganges. They were in war with Nanda kingdom of Magadha. Given that Lord Buddha appeared about two hundred years before Alexander, those writings were proof of Greeks residing before invasion of Alexander.

The reality is this. Indians were indeed once world religion. Yavan means one looks young as Greeks usually looked pretty young. So did the South Chinese mysterious people and they were also called yunan. Greeks are actually called yunani as well. Chinese emperors and ancient writers believed that Greece was settled by their ancestors - maybe a substratum of them. Anyways, the source word is sanskrit. This is further helped by the fact that the areas from which Greeks emerged were ruled by mitanni and hittites just few centuries before Greeks emerged and nothing is known of the intermediate period. Mitanni and hittites were clearly Vedic people, they worshipped Vedic gods and ruled over Greece Turkey ex

These Greek settlers were common masses from Asia Minor or turkey because western half of turkey was under Greek influence if there was a rebellion within the Greek provinces of the Persian empire the Persian emperor would exile them as slaves to a city or a camp that was situated in the far reaches of the Persian empire one such city was dayuan as referred to by Chinese sources in Afghanistan and Nysa in northwestern India because before Alexander’s conquest north western India aka Pakistan was under the control of the Persian empire.

Dionysus, Danavraj, Yama, Jamshed, Vivasvan, Surya, Shani. I believe this is the story. Danavraj (Dionysus) defeated Vivasvan(Surya) and took his son Jamshed(Yama). Later Jamshed would fight with Shani in a great war where he was spared after damaging his legs. These stories might have some connection with Jamshed the king of Nysa.

The Greko-Romans had a long time relation with the Indians, learning arithmetic, geometry etc., and had Vedic names like Oaronus, Mitra, Indra, Agni, etc. Implying Panini was a Greek and learned grammar.
