That's probably what people miss in todays music sometimes. The built up and catchiness of songs like that. Bands like Tears for Fears, Simple Minds Depeche Mode etc. mixed classic and percussion instruments with digital synthesizers. And finally they had great voices - no need of auto-tune. Up beat songs arranged like that can put you in a good mood. I don't dislike todays music but sometimes I miss the way how they produced songs those days - so different...Simple Minds - "Alive and Kicking" and "Don't you forget about me" are another great samples of that type of sound.

I 110% agree with your statement. In today’s pop (cuz yes shout is kind of pop sounding) they let aside the instrumental and atmosphere. These two elements are key however to keep your song timeless and memorable. Shout is a great exemple where the song take some break to let the « musical » parts to take the lead. And finally, the song build itself til the end for an epic finale (especially the long/album version)

Songs From The Big Chair is their album that has both Everybody Wants To Rule the World and Shout on it. It is an absolutely classic 80s album, all killer, no filler. Try Working Hour, Head Over Heels, I Believe and Listen from the same album. But don't forget Change, Mad World (you will have heard the Gary Jules cover I suspect) and the absolutely beautiful Pale Shelter from their first album, The Hurting. So that is albums 1 and 2. From their 3rd album you have Sowing The Seeds of Love, Woman In Chains and Advice For The Young At Heart. There. That should keep you going.

They weren’t a duo, there were another two members: keyboardist Ian Stanley and drummer Manny Elias who both never get the credit they deserve, one of the biggest misconceptions in popular music is that tears for fears were a duo. Ian Stanley co-wrote Shout and Everybody wants to rule the world and also created and played the epic synth that drives both songs forward.

@@Bobsend They were officially a duo, they just hired other musicians when needed. They stated after Graduate that they didn't want to be in a group again as that made decision making harder, two was enough. And yes, Ian Stanley did contribute a lot to their music, but they were still a duo.

Yeah, I don't think "Hands Across America" would happen today (well, obviously right now it literally can't because of COVID, but you know what I mean).

Prior to Tears for Fears, these 2 guys were in a band with 2 members from a group called Naked Eyes, so they already had chemistry.

It's wonderful seeing young people appreciating music from some years ago... wonderful music with proper musicians, singers, producers, mixing engineers. No technical advances,no computers no vocoders of modern times can create the magic of the 80's. I am so fortunate to having grown up in those wonderful times.... Be sure to listen to "The working hour"...pure bliss❤️

Great 80s jam Jayvee! They had such a unique sound. Really good. Their songs on several 80s movie's soundtracks. *Mad World* so good Adam Lambert did fantastic cover in 90s, and they used it for *Donnie Darko* 🎬

🥰 Thank you THANK YOU!! 🥰 I grew up with this band and still love them today! (Yes, we have been waiting for a new album for a long time now, but I don't mind at all... Their classics are ALWAYS worth listening to again and again! Roland Orzabal is the main vocalist on the Songs from the Big Chair album, whereas if you listen to The Hurting, Curt Smith did al lot more vocals (he was the one singing Everybody Wants to Rule the World). You should definitely listen to all their works... they are similar and yet vastly different albums. The Hurting was very moody and a bit dark, SFtBC was a lot more poppy (had their biggest hits), Seeds of Love is very soulful (due to the addition of Oleta Adams, a gospel singer they discovered in Kansas City one evening). Then they broke up. The 90s, Roland released two other albums under the Tears for Fears name: Elemental and Raoul and the Kings of Spain (both very good albums!) Curt had a couple of solo projects that are good, but hard to track down. In 2001, Roland also released a solo album which is amazing... Tomcats Screaming Outside. 2004 they reunited and released Everybody Loves a Happy Ending, their last studio album... Although, they did release two new singles on their Greatest Hits in 2017 - I Love You, But I'm Lost and Stay. Thank you for this and the EWtRtW review and I hope you will listen to more! Yes, definitely check out Woman in Chains from The Seeds of Love... and my favorite from The Hurting, Pale Shelter. (Yes, Roland does get hit in the eye by a paper airplane in that video! 😳)

It’s great to see a young person listening the music I grew up with in the 90’s.! I wish I could take you back to experience tge amazing times then. No division pushed by false narratives. As a black man i can say everyone just got on and had a great time with music that was super diverse. Every band seemed to have their own style.
