Let's also not forget to add the most important part: you can literally recreate this blending technique with other markers! I've seen artists try it by holding two pen nibs up to each other and waiting until they felt like it soaked in enough and it created the same effect! The only difference is Chameleon pens make it more convenient, so you only have to hold the long chamber on the table instead of holding two pen nibs together

Indigo well if you were going to replace your marker set, yeah. But if you already have markers you normally do this with or want to experiment with this type of gradient effect, my point is that you would not need to invest in a different set of markers if you already had some you owned or a different set of markers you were planning to buy that you heavily prefer.

To me they seem perfect for someone who doesn't know that blenders are a thing, or that you can blend with light colored markers if you want more complex colors than you can typically get with markers straight from the box. They seem like a kind of beginner product, but the price tag is pretty steep for a beginner product. I think I would enjoy using these markers to teach middle school kids about warm and cool variations of the same color. I also think these are a very, very expensive product for that end use. I personally wouldn't have even looked at them twice because they're *so thick.* I don't even like Copic or Prismacolor markers because they're so thick, and go down so, so wet. I mix Faber-Castell and Tombow brush tip pens. I love them. I've used them for years and years. (Admittedly, I'm doing fashion illustration, and not cartooning, so I want markers that create a softer, lighter, more fluid look. I don't want chunky blocks of super saturated color. I basically want markers that produce an almost watercolor effect, with greater control and saturation. If my style was more cartoon-y I would probably like them more.)

Jazza, I would LOVE to see you try these markers again and instead of choosing colors that would be relatively easy to blend or close to each other in the spectrum, try some weird combinations that would be a HUGE pain in the ass to blend manually. Red and green, magenta and brown, blue and orange... Things of that nature and test them directly against your own manual blending! That could be interesting! Maybe a side by side piece? Half copic, half chameleon?

I've realized in multiple videos (and this one too) in which people try out these markers they have a tendency to compare them to copic markers and their way of blending, and then are surprised they don't get the same result and tend to run into similar problems. I've been using chameleon markers for a few months now (for funsies :D) and I've noticed that most problems can be resolved by doing some things differently: For example: In this video, Jazza runs into the problem of the 'blending lines' being visible in some places; This happens when you move/'pull' the marker towards you to colour. With copic markers, this is no problem, you can push or pull the markers and the colour that comes out is the same, but with blending the chameleon markers you work with two colours in one marker, so the ink can only flow in one direction or it becomes messy. Second, people find it difficult to work with chameleon markers because it's not always clear how long it takes to go from one colour to the next; This, I agree with you, it's very tricky. But by using them more and more I started to get a feeling for it, it also helps to make a cheat sheet with practice strokes with 5 sec, 10 sec, etc. And something I also noticed is that when you put a darker colour on a lighter colour to blend it last longer than when you blend with putting a light colour on a darker marker. Which brings me to this third point: Jazza says he had trouble with the dark ink lasting too long before it went to a lighter colour; Yes, that tends to happen, I agree with you. But there's a simple solution :D Either practice with the timing... Or switch the blending markers; work from light to dark instead of from dark to light ^^ That's what I kinda like about chameleon markers is that you can blend both ways. With copic markers you blend with marker 1 (light) -> marker 2 -> marker 3 (dark) -> back to marker 1. With chameleon markers you can start with dark or light and blend to another colour. These are two different ways of blending for two different markers. I'm not against copics or anything, they work great! But usually people try the chameleons out and compare them too quickly to copics (which are more expensive, more well known, and thus more popular) and treat the chameleons like they would treat a copic marker. I don't mind that too much though, the only thing that bothers me is that people try out the cham markers once and then when they don't work like copic (which people usually have been using FAR longer than the 'three hours' for the video) they give up on them :/ I have only worked with the markers and I have no experience whatsoever with the pencils so I can't say anything about those :3 Oh yeah one more thing: you can ditch the colourless blending chambers on top of the markers if they bother you, they don't dry out that quick, and even of they do; just one drop of rubbing alcohol, and it works just fine :D (or use any other of the dozens of free blending chambers they send with it) Edit: Wow so many likes??? O.o Thank you so much guys!! You're the best!!!! Edit: Sorry I messed up the direction the marker should go D': It's fixed now, sorry if you read it first when I wrote it wrong (you have to push the marker, not pull towards you) sorry again, I wrote this very quickly at 1 am and read it wrong >->! Edit2: Re-reading this I realize I may come across a bit rude towards Jazza, I didn't mean to be that way! He did a wonderful job using the markers for the first time!!! And I'm completely fine with it if it isn't his preferred way to work with markers and whether he prefers copics over chameleons. This was more meant to talk about my experience and to share some hints or tips for people who want to try out chameleon markers too.

I like your comment and find that it is very insightful. Within the context of a review such as Jazza's the time that it would take to use these markers and give and account such as yours would be substabtially cost affective. As the saying goes time is money. Thus taking the fact that Copics have been the industry standard for quite a while it is far to say that the learning curve is quite greater with the Chameleon markers. That being said like presented in the video to each their own choice. If one does have the time to learn to work with them that is great and more power to them but if you don't have that time to take it isn't worth wasting ones time. Have a pleasant day!

I have tried these before and there is one main thing I really dislike about them.. they are so inconsistent. I will put the marker into the blending chamber and hold the marker in a certain way for 10 seconds EVERY TIME, yet when I use them on paper the ink starts changing at different times... This ultimately makes them more difficult to use than my copics, blick studio markers or Ohuhus... This being said, I think chameleon markers are really nice for coloring pages or beginners that are still trying to learn to blend. I think I would also like them more if I had the chambers to make it go from yellow to red, for instance.. I know those chambers are available, but they don't come in the $100 set which only comes with a colorless blender chamber.

To get a more consistent time put the caps back on with the tip down, and tap it on the table. This will ensure both tips are filled/saturated and should give a little better consistent blend time. This seemed to help when I used them.

Man, I have to be honest with you: I don't paint. I started watching your videos because one of them popped up in my recommended section (Comparing Expensive vs Cheap Oil Paints). As an "artist" myself (I'm a musician) I totally get that feeling you had towards the Chameleon markers. For me, if a guitar has lots of features and it's not a cheap instrument, I expect it to be a breeze to use, and most of the time I find myself leaning towards cheaper, simpler guitars because of the experience. You want your tools to be on your side, and whenever that's not the case it's just kinda frustrating, and especially with expensive gear that you're supposed to enjoy because it's expensive. Anyway, I just felt like actively agreeing with you because I've also felt the guilt of not enjoying the expensive, packed with features, marketable gear as much as cheaper, simpler gear. I actually enjoy your videos, they're starting to give me enough inspiration to try painting for myself. Keep up the good work and the good mood.

Yes!! Agree. I have tried them and they are so fun. It takes 15-25 seconds to take caps off and wait for the blend. They do take time to get used to to get the timing down of when to start coloring and when to stop blending. They are fun!!

@MoonArtDreams6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jazza, I love your videos a lot, but I feel in this one you didn't quite get the point of the Chameleon Markers... The mixing chamber that came with the markers is a colorless blender and contains clear alcohol. Applying this clear mixing chamber to the marker (which I didn't see you do in this video) gives you a gradient from light to dark (so basically from light to the color you chose). That is called "Color Tone" and the reason why the markers are called "Chameleon Color Tones". The Color Tops however do something different. They're basically an addition to the Chameleon Pens, but not necessary to use the Chameleon markers on their own. The Color Tops give you the opportunity to mix one color with another one and have a gradient from the one color to another. So you have 50 "Color Tones" Markers with a CLEAR mixing chamber (light to dark gradients) PLUS 50 "Color Tops" to combinate with the markers (color to color gradients). Knowing that makes using these markers a lot easier. Basically you can use the markers with the Color Tops to first put down a gradient (as you did perfectly) and then use the clear mixing chamber on your marker to darken up your shadows where needed and blend together the streaks that accidentally happened. I admit using Chameleon Markers is a little bit of a puzzle but once you get the hang of it, they're pretty fun to use and work with. They need some getting used to and definitely a bit of experience, but once you're able to master them, you'll have a lot of fun with them 😊 I can personally say after using all different kind of markers (cheap markers, Copic markers and Chameleon Markers) the Chameleon markers are definitely my favorites to work with 👍🏻 That being said, thanks for another great video with great art! But for the next time, please do some more research about a product before making a "review" that only covers half the things that you're able to do with a certain product 😉 Greetings from Germany, Sarah (Also, this comment is meant to be constructive criticism with additional product information, not a hate comment or the like :))

I honestly love his reviews, especially when they're as funny as this one, but I just wanted to point out that the pens can do more than what he has shown in the video since I had the feeling that they were a little bit mis-presented 😉 Wouldn't have said anything when it was just an "impressions video" but since he "reviewed" them I wanted to add what these markers are actually capable of 😀

Those have different meanings, though. Asking whether the tools are epic compared to whether they're just a gimmick isn't the same as asking whether they're rad or a fad. It's particularly "fad" that ruins the connection; "rad" could be related appropriately to "epic," but "fad" and "gimmick" are just two completely different things. But either way, both pairs rhyme, so maybe I'm missing inside-joke sort of context as to why the pairing you suggested would have been better.

I picked up 2 sets of the markers in Michael’s. While I agree about the circumference of the marker being rather bulky, if you take the color top (or colorless top) off and put the lid on the end you’re not using (i.e. you’re coloring with the brush tip, the lid would go on the bullet nib) and then the color top would be out of the way making the marker length more normal. Just put the color top on the brush nib like a regular lid when done. I think these markers could have some great effects but may take some practice getting there.

I don't know why I did this, but I calculated the unit price for the 22 and 55 pack. The 22 pack was about $3.60 per marker and the 55 pack was about $2.10 per marker. So, if you used the 22 pack's unit price and times it by 36 to get the equivalen price to Copics, it'd be about $129.60 for Chameleon markers. Which is a good $40 difference and about 20% lower. However, if you used the 55 pack's unit price it'd be only $75.60 which is about 60% lower. So either way the Chameleon markers are considerably lower. I also averaged the two prices to get $102.6, which means a unit price of $2.85, which would be the most probable price point. And, it's also around 48% lower than Copics.

The actual sets are color tone pens. Meaning the pens have the color but the color top is a colorless blender. If you buy a set you can only make fading gradients. You have to buy separate sets of color tops to be able to make different color gradients.

Have you tried just holding two markers together with their nibs, one upside down just like with these weird chamber things? With other pens like Tombow brush markers, this creates about the same blending effect. Here's a suggestion: for shadows, first draw in the shadow with the corresponding pen. Then, take the cartridge of that same shade, and mix it just for like 1 or 2 seconds with the "true" shade of the object youre drawing (i.e. the one that corresponds to the well-lit part of the object, sorry I don't know any technical terms). Fill in the transition and the well-lit portions, and boom! no need to guess how long you have to hold the pen upside down, since you don't have to guess the amount of "shadow" ink you're gonna need! Hope this helps :)

I have tried to use Copic markers and despite the popularity I always come back to Chameleon Markers. Jazza mentioned many times that something he didn't like about the markers was all the pieces you have to take apart and all the steps... actually all you have to do is take the marker lid off, the colour top off and put them together and hold. You don't actually have to take the white mixing chamber off the pen or both sides. He also didn't use the white mixing chamber that comes on the pen itself. I also think that the blending of the marker without the whole mixing process is even better than Copic markers. I believe that it's just the way you use them. I WAS SCREAMING through the screen when he was using them wrong or not professionally. I don't even own colour tops, I only own the markers them self because I can't afford the colour tops and I still get an amazing outcome. I also use the pencils which I also find much better than he described. NO HATE ON JAZZA I just feel like he should have given them more of a chance and experimented more. I get that they are big but it's something that you have to get used to. And is it their fault? All the things that the Chameleon Markers can do you'd expect a big pen. Again no hate just my opinion.

I KNOW! He was using them so wrong and the blending is amazing if you do it right. Way better than copics tbh

They're markers. The fact that there's a right or a wrong way to use them is itself a mark against them. No pun intended.

I got chameleon markers for christmas one year, and they are a very cool idea! But I completely agree with you, it always feels like im drawing with a giant pencil you'd buy as a kid, that is too top heavy to use well. I also think I end up using the colors by themselves rather than wasting my time waiting for the colors to blend together. Also the saturation is stronnng. I used to do those adult coloring books and even layering colors more than once would cause it to fade out of the lines.

Glad you made this video! I just saw these new markers at Michael's a few weeks ago and I thought they looked interesting... I think I would give them a try at some point when it comes to quality, blending, and affordability but I can see how the multi-step process and the on spot timing of the blending can get in the way of what your trying to make

I've used chameleon markers from time to time and I agree with everything you said. The colours are great and the blends are really satisfying when you get the time right but they are just such a pain to work with! I can't imagine do if a full piece with them, they work well for small areas but that's all
@rheanneelledge17606 жыл бұрын
joolzzenda when I bought them, I faced this issue. I found a lot of videos by the company that helped. Basically, you slice up a large area into smaller sections so that each section has the same blending. And I personally found that I needed a scrap paper to test the color on and to wear off some of the transition so I could match it to the paper (sometimes even in the middle of when I was coloring if the 2nd blend was more drawn out than the first). In the end, they take a lot of practice but it’s so much cheaper for me than copics so it’s worth it in my opinion.
