love your comments about Tim the loaderman! I really enjoy the sense of community you strive for. Regarding that rusted light mounting bolt, try drilling the head off first with a larger size bit and once the housing is removed you have a good place to start drilling the remnants out...

I was always amazed at the sheer pull and lugging ability of the 4/98 engine - designed to power a tractor at 2.5 - 3 Tonne, yet did allright powering a 3C at 7.5 tonne..looks like that sump plug is the justification for a nice new yellow power unit. Your vids on the 3C rebuild have me glued!
@jimmymurphy71737 жыл бұрын
you can rebuild the engine in a power train without removing it .unless you have a problem with the crank shaft .the pistons and liners will come up from the bottom. very easy engine to work on .I had a power train for eight years. probably one of the best diggers jcb ever made. keep up the good work..
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
Yep that's right Jimmy and I want to show a 3CII and a 3C Powertrain to demonstrate just how much room one has to work on it compared to the other. However, I want to pull the engine so I can have it fully rebuilt and having the crane on the MJ makes that easy enough.

An old trick my grandad showed me, with getting a stubborn cross-head screw, was to put a piece of an elastic band under the screwdriver tip, press and turn,.... So I have found this strange little trick has work 95% of the time, haven't a clue how or why it works but it does lol... You mentioned someone called 'Cotton-top" in this vlog, what has happened to him may I ask ? Bless Trish in Devon..
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
Never heard that but I am going to try it ! Cotontop3 is a KZbinr. He's taking a few days off from filming as he has lots going on currently. He has been such a big help and supporter of my channel (as has the likes of Loggerwade, Rustyglovebox, Wyattoneable and so many many others) but Tim has done a lot to encourage me to keep uploading footage and for that I will always show him my support.

If your lifting the JCB engine out, you have to take the top bell housing off and disconnect split pins on the shaft into the clutch, you may already know this, I found out after disconnecting everything on a Leyland in a scrapyard and the engine still wouldn’t come out.
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
No, mines a Powertrain ! But yes, with the manual box you are correct. It was a clever design that allowed you to change the clutch without splitting the unit. I'll video it all Ant so you can see the differences.

the 4 98 we had in our 3C was a brilliant starter and never gave problems, apart for a couple of oil leaks. A virtually identical engine fitted to an early 2 wheel drive loadall was a heap of trouble. The 3C was my best mate but the loadall a total pain.

at least the oil wasn't too bad as when my brother changed the gear oil on a claas axion a bit of crown wheel that was a few inches long fell out.

SUFFOLK ?!!!!!!! Wars have been started over less ! Norfolk originally dear boy. I rather like Bungay, had some good times there.

Look out, border patrols about! Pretty sure I heard you say you were in Suffolk in a previous video! Got out of Bungay when I was 10. Still have family there but the place never really changes. 'tis a nice place though. Spent most of my teens and 20's in and around Great Yarmouth, 6 years of that on a farm inbetween Ormesby and Filby. I just call myself an East Anglian to save the wars :)
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
Yes the 4455 video was in Suffolk. Who's farm were you on near Ormesby ?
@beefyman6667 жыл бұрын
Whartons, Filby Lane Farm. Not a very big farm, only about 120 acres I think. Not sure what he runs now but had a MF675 and 3070 in fantastic condition back then (about 15 years ago). Lovely tractors they were.

I'm sure it will be fine. If it became too expensive I would simply cut it up and turn it into log splitters (3C's make great log splitter donors)
@NorthEastOhio7 жыл бұрын
logsplitter doners?
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
Yes, 3C's have big hydraulic rams and obviously lots of spools and controls so you cut them up and use the bits to make powerful log splitters.

I made the mistake of replacing my 3040 headlights with non genuine about 10 years ago but they soon went rusty inside. The old saying is often true - buy cheap, buy twice. I was at our local JD dealer the other day for a part and bought a 400ml spray tin of JD green paint for £8.61. Looked on ebay last night and non genuine is half as much on top again.

Very true. I'll get genuine if available or quality replacements if not.

Hello muck, great videos on a lovely old machine, is there one for the engine going back into your 3c? The shavings on the sump plug are possibly from the machine having a high tally of hours to service intervals on her, In my experience there are 2 types of farmer the one who meets every service interval or the other who's machinery never sees new oil from leaving the factory.....I wonder if this is the case with your machine and this is running in shavings being that tolerances wouldn't have been as tight in those days on the old Leyland's?
@Rab937 жыл бұрын
Thanks and keep up the fantastic videos
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
The engine is fully rebuilt Robert and sitting in the shed waiting to go in. The reason for the metal filings was because it was bolloxed ! I made the right decision to have it fully rebuilt so at least now we have a base line to move on from and keep her serviced.

Lord Muck oh dear, more than a stitch needed then, one of the pit falls of buying old stuff. my farther bought a orange fordson N on a sale at Bridgend, got it home it wouldn't start, got it going, then it over heated a.d cooked the magneto. He went to three ploughing matches and failed to finish the three. In the end and after a new magneto, inlet manifold, plug leads, plugs he managed to finish a ploughing match.
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
We had the same with an E27N. Used to have to take the mag off, put it in the Rayburn for an hour, try again. In the end a new mag and it was the best starting Fordson we ever had.

@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
Once the engine is out Cynthia, we will remove the head, the pistons and the crankshaft. All these components will be rinsed and blown through and then the oilways etc will be flushed with a cleaning fluid and blown through again. Once the engine is rebuilt, I will run it for a few hours before re-draining the oil and changing the filter again to ensure any remaining debris is caught. Have a Happy Easter !

@w0560075687 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't want you to think I'm a gloom merchant but if the engine has been neglected from a service point of view then surely you must have some concerns the remainder of the machine particularly the back axle and transmission? I ask because if your into the engine for the repairs are you also into the other major components as well??
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
When I looked at the machine originally Dan, she ran well and the transmission works fine (they basically work or they don't) The whole machine has not been knocked about too much for a 3C and she has been well greased (unlike many 3c's) The Leyland 4/98 was always a bit of a 'when' not 'if' engine and was even a pig for locking up, dropping valves etc after a few hundred hours when new. So it's not unexpected, the oil itself is not in bad shape (except for the bonus bits...) At the money I bought it for, I can do a fair bit to her and still be right considering it is one of the most sought after JCB models built.

Hi Kurt Thanks for the update, I'm kinda thinking Tims maybe having a health scare with his neck/ fitting in family time plus just getting tired of having a hard time making a living with the mills messing them round. ontop KZbin has cut any rewards from many channels, that maybe helped him a bit doing it and his trolls are the final straw. There are going to be a lot of channels we sub to go subscription only or just vanish one night. It's a shame he's got this problem and other than quit or disable comments there's no real answer, youtube don't seem to care about the abuse and dick heads. That sucks that you found a mechanics chia pet on that sump plug. I'm kinda thinking you might get a crappy surprise on the main hyd filter to. I just ordered a new old stock from Ebay U.S last night to do mine, I don't think they changed it when the old hyd pump died!. I've been told be careful with the torque converter seal into the shuttle. Some had a plate to unbolt the converter before taking the engine/trans out mine doesn't so it's easy to mess the seals up. Do you have an original operators hand book or want one I found another one online last night if you want it?, it could turn up if it's not gone. Painting the Deer's your choice but if I was as far in as you are it would make sense to do it now properly with that front end apart, than put it together/ then take it apart again to paint it or make a half assed job, where you can't paint it without using a fire hose or stirrup pump to get in places L.O.L. Oh by the way the Ford engine questions out there. Take care see ya next time. Robert
@LordMuck7 жыл бұрын
Tim has much more in his life than KZbin - we are just lucky he has shared what he has with us. Seriously, KZbin is in trouble and they are just going down in a spin and seemingly doing nothing to pull out. Time will tell. Have been after an operators manual if you know where there is one ? Would be great. In all honesty, I'd be lying to say I'm not a bit glad that I can rebuild the engine and have a fresh start knowing it's history so I can keep it maintained...
