Summer is actually the best time to read Japanese ghost stories as it’s classed as “spooky season” in Japan (particularly in August). One of the common thoughts is to cool down from the heat and humidity to read a ghost story to send a shiver down your spine! 😆👻

As an Edinburgh dweller can I just say how hilarious it is that you've uploaded a 'summer' tbr on this Saturday which literally looks like we're living in a purgatory

Anne Bishop is my favorite author of all time and very few people come across her. I also read her books after first discovering Juliet Marillier. Her books are dark but also leave you with very strong feelings too because you'll just completely fall for all the characters.

I'm still trying to get caught up on my NetGalley books, I've really been slacking on reading ebooks! And I want to reread Station Eleven, for the hopefulness after world-changing events.

YES. Really hope you enjoy Daughter of the Blood! That is Anne Bishop’s best series for high fantasy fans, and is a fantastic character driven series. It’s not *as* female-focused as the marketing implies, but the magic system is the best and honestly so iconic. Really hope you enjoy, but can’t wait to hear your thoughts either way!

Hi Jean, I don't know if you remember a while ago you posted on instagram about A hitchhikers guide to the galaxy and I commented that I was interested in it but wasn't really a sci-fi reader and I was intimidated by the fact it was such a loved series but you encouraged me to try it and said it was more british humour than really intense sci-fi. I've just started the first book and absolutely loving it- thank you for giving me a push to read outside my comfort zone. Hope all is well and stay safe x

I do remember and I am SO pleased. I really feel they are a quintessential example of British humour you're right - sci-fi is more the vehicle to deliver the wit aha.

@@JeansThoughts I was wondering if you had any reccomendations for lovers of Agatha Christie's Poirot series? As dated and as sometimes mysogonistic as he is! I want to delve into some more detective fiction- love Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano, adore Sherlock Holmes so just looking for the same kind of vibes. Any reccomendations? Hope all goes well with your move back to Scotland. Stay safe x

Jean, can you recommend any “serious” romance novels? I love romance but don’t enjoy the fluffy, cutesy or funny novels normally available; I prefer a bit more drama and angst. It seems to be more common in fantasy romances, and I know you’re a romance lover too.

I think „Hadriana in all my dreams“ is probably about the practice of actually turning people into zombies as part of the Voodoo religion and not about zombies as we understand them as fantastic creatures of scary stories since Rene Deprestre is Haitian and Haiti is the only country in the world where Voodoo is the official religion. Wade Davis wrote a whole book about the process of zombie making in Haiti called „the serpent and the rainbow“ I read it in the 90s the whole practice is fascinating to say the least

Affinity is the only Sarah Waters book I haven't read yet (and God I hope she has a new one soon!) and I think the reason I've left it for last is because I'm not typically into paranormal spooky stuff because I am A BABY, so I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the spook-level of it :P (Also...I'm sorry, I know it might be tiresome when people comment about your accent, but this just makes me chuckle - sometimes, if my phone is close enough to my laptop, when you say the word "series", Siri wakes up and pings at me :P )
