Huh this is a pretty neat idea. I'd definitely look into doing this on my ZJ if I weren't already planning on replacing the pump as it's like 25 years old and a little noisy at times lol

The sector shaft doesnt have anywhere near the lateral force on it now with the ram doing most of the work. Mines fine on 40s with D60.

Just a heads up. I have seen 3 people with ported JK boxes,and ram assist break a sector shaft on the trail. no clue how its possible. My assumption is the pressure inst 1:1 in the ram vs the box. thus force is being applied to the sector shaft, or the ram is over steering the box thus breaking the sector shaft.
@4WDTrek
@4WDTrek 2 жыл бұрын
Funny you say that, a buddy of mine just broke his sector shaft after I made this video. I'm looking into that sector shaft brace that he did.
@jimsather6892
@jimsather6892 2 жыл бұрын
@@4WDTrek There are several of them out there, but FWIW I really liked the Synergy sector shaft brace/stabilizer a lot. I ended up having to take mine off when I got the big bore PSC box, but up until that point it was definitely a noticeable improvement, removing some of the play caused by the factory aluminum box and mount in the JL.

@@jimsather6892 good heads up. I have been looking at the synergy one as well.
@Marty1911

I suspect that in those cases the stroke of the ram exceeded the travel of the other steering components. That would be the only way that i can think of that the ram would add stress to the sector shaft.
@jimsather6892
@jimsather6892 2 жыл бұрын
@@Marty1911 That might be true if the wheels were on a flat smooth low/no friction surface. It is not true when in the rocks. The force of the ram is both lateral and diagonal back to the sector shaft (basically an anchor point), and there can be quite a bit of force even before the steering travel limit is reached when there is high wheel friction.

I don't know about the JK, but on the JL I'd say that the steering stabilizer mount isn't really a strong enough anchor for hydro RAM. I did a full PSC system and had some fabrication done on that end. You might want to keep an eye on that. Also, despite the magnet, I'd still be nervous about shavings that could possibly fall into the steering box when porting it this way. That's just me though...
@4WDTrek
@4WDTrek 2 жыл бұрын
I should have specified in the video, this isn't the stock mount for the steering stabilizer. It was an aftermarket one for a lift that I installed on the jeep. Also with the shavings, as I was cutting with the tap, and also with the drill, I was very meticulous about only going so deep, pulling it out and cleaning, then cutting a bit more. But that is definitely good looking out for that though!

How has this gone for you, have you upgraded to 40s? Thoughts on going to the 1.75 over 1.5 stroke?
@4WDTrek
@4WDTrek 6 ай бұрын
It has been great on the 40s. I'm not sure if the 1.75 is actually needed or not. My limiting factor currently us the slower response when turning hard one way then back the other way at slow speeds, but I think that's due to the flow rate of the pump. But for l just normal driving and on trails, it works very well.

@@4WDTrek100% pump I have the same thing on my JKU. When I’m bombing a trail and need to quickly dodge something or pulling out of a driveway or parking lot fast I have steering lag. It was ever so slightly when perfectly centered. You can see it force the wheel out a bit. You can put a spacer externally or internally to limit the travel though.

When you do this it’s a good idea to clean it first at least. You really want to rebuild it when you do this cuz of more pressure. Also clean out the inside cuz ya just put shavings in it.
