There’s so much to consider when deciding on the best tow vehicle behind a motorhome. Between selecting the tow vehicle brake system, the RV toad tow bar, and how much to spend, the RV Odd Couple knew they needed help! So they called a friend that knew about towing a vehicle behind a motorhome.
While taking their jeep out to Yant Flats and Sand Hallow in Southern Utah, the RV Odd Couple interview their friend, Jason of Takin Our Toys & Livin. He explains the pros and cons of a Jeep as a tow vehicle.

There are some technical reasons that make a Jeep Wrangler (or Gladiator) such a fantastic tow vehicle. In order to flat tow, you MUST have the steering "unlocked" allowing the front wheels to freely pivot as you take corners/turns. In most vehicles, the steering wheel is locked if the key is not in the ignition in the "On" position. In the Wrangler, the steering wheel is always unlocked. This is a very important and often overlooked feature for flat towing. In all of those other vehicles that require the key to be in the "On" position to unlock the steering wheel, that means that the vehicle's electrical system (including the computer) are now active. In many cases, you are required to pull fuses or install some sort of disconnect system to avoid these issues. In the worst cases, some vehicles will even be logging miles on the odometer while being towed because of the key being in the "on" position (unless you disable the electrical system). Of course you need the electrical system in some capacity for your auxiliary brake system which leads to another strong point of the Wrangler......they put a constantly powered 12V outlet right in the center console as if specifically designed to plug in an auxiliary brake system. Congrats on your Jeep purchase! While others are worried about miles per gallon, you get to experience the more important thing in life...smiles per gallon!

The Jeep is an awesome addition to your capabilities in exploring/adventuring remote hard to access areas. Please consider keeping a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) in the Jeep at all times just in case you break down and need to be rescued. You have to buy the PLB and then sign up and pay for the service contract for a small fee but it is very good insurance for emergencies. Plus some PLB's offer satellite texting communications so your family will know you're ok as well as built in satellite GPS (some with downloadable topographic maps) to be spot on with your navigation. I love you guys!!!

Winning. Our 12 year old daughter is on the spectrum, and we recently sold our 32 foot travel trailer and got a class C so we could tow a 95 jeep cherokee my wife agreed to get too! And the old cherokees are only 3,000 pounds! Super light! See you out there! 🤙

I flat tow my 2008 Jeep Liberty (4620 lbs), and we rarely go off road (like you did in the video, but we can do some of that). If you don't leave the pavement that often, and want a lighter, electric car, I have to agree that the Ford C-Max hybrid or the Energi (pure electric version) is a very good idea. I have seen several C-Max's behind everything from a Forester Class C to a Tiffin Phaeton. One thing you mentioned was renting a car at your destination, and in some cases, that's actually a great idea. We drove from Seattle to Tulsa in 2019 for a funeral, and knowing that we were going straight there, staying a week and coming straight back, we decided to rent a car instead of towing our Liberty. The extra weight costs us an average of almost 2 MPG on this same 2100 mile route - nearly $350 extra, wasted, gas cost. We got a deal for a seven day rental at Enterprise Rent-a-Car on a Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab and still only spent $230 including the gas we used while in town. Very good video and very informative! Keep up the great work and see you down the road!

Something you may not know about the "Jeep wave": the newer Jeep should wave first to pay respect to the elder. I know it's not always obvious which is newer with so many on the road now. But a JK should wave to a TJ, a TJ should wave to a YJ, a YJ should wave to a CJ, etc. I love Jeeps, have had 4 (2 Wranglers: '97 and '01 - 2 Grand Cherokees: '95 and '11). Most people say the Cherokees don't count and I'll have to agree :-). I never got waived at while driving the Cherokees, only the Wranglers. Especially my customized '01 TJ. It really stood out in the crowd. Be safe crawling around out there!

your friend couldn't have been more correct. he hit the head of the nail with the hammer when he talked about the (what I think) is the most overlooked issue when towing a vehicle. that is being able to fully disengage the drive train without having to remove the driveshaft and the damage you can cause your transmission if you fail to do it. as you know, I am a retired truck tech. and these are things you learn when studying towing and recovery. in some owners manuals it is even stated how to tow your vehicle. this is the main reason I always request a flat bed tow when my 3500 truck breaks down, (yes, i have had a few break downs.) looks like a lot of fun, enjoy stay healthy and safe travels.

Nothing better than a Jeep!! For many years, I had a diesel pusher and always towed a Jeep, four-down with Blue Ox. Lots of four wheelin' in the CO mountains - can't beat getting high in the mountains on those shelf roads. Moab is another great place for four wheelin'. Now that I've downsized, I tow my Wolf Pup with a Jeep GC, still using Blue Ox but as a WDH/sway bars. I admit to sometimes forgetting I'm no longer driving a Wrangler and give the Jeep wave!! lol

WHAT DOES JEEP STAND FOR: The Jeep name came to prominence during WWII, where soldiers commonly referred to “general purpose” vehicles as “jeeps.” Cartoon character Eugene the Jeep was also very popular with soldiers during the war. Jeep has never revealed the true source of the name so there is much speculation as to its origin. Another theory floating around is: Jeep: "Just Enough Essential Parts"

I was fortunate to work on the early military jeeps (made by Willy motors / Kaiser Jeep) at least one, a M38 / m38a1 when I was stationed in Germany I got the honor of refurbishing a relic. (jeep = Just Empty Every Pocket) .... hahaha. after confusing myself with military jeeps, there is a lot of history here. I worked on the M38a1, M151 - M151a2, Hmmv and saw many manufactures, turns out that "Jeep" has been made By; Willy - Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and American Motors. The Hmmv was made by AM General.

John Good Choice Jeep seems like the most popular flat tow vehicle out there, Two weeks ago I bought an 2016 Winnebago Forza 36G with 13,000 miles on it, Traded in my 2017 Ram 3500hd and Winnebago 5th wheel and a lot of cash, Now purchased 2011 Jeep unlimited 70th anniversary addition trying to get it hooked all together now was lucky found blue-ox and plate, cables and safety chains for $410.00, Bought the roadmaster braking system and wiring kit $1200.00 i might get out of this for under $2000.00 if lucky!

Man, this takes me back to when we were getting ready to hit the road, I had my tow behind all set...a 2000 4x4 Ford Ranger, I was going to put a shell on it for extra storage and I was day's away from getting the baseplate and all the necessary equipment for it.... And the top half of the motor gave up the ghost. :-/ I was seriously bummed... I didn't pay much for this vehicle to start with BUT I had done a decent amount of work on it. In the end we decided to cut our losses and sold it as a mechanic's special on Craigslist and it was gone. What I ended up with was a low milage one owner Toyota RAV4 that we could tow 4 down. While I certainly can't go "wheeling" with it, it's a front wheel drive manual transmission car, it has enough ground clearance to get me around well graded fire-roads and such. It's been a great car as a toad and we've racked up the miles on it as I used it as an Uber vehicle for 8 months before we left. Someday, I'll have a Jeep, but for now...this does us fine.

Oh what fun! This video brought a smile to my face (my dad passed Friday night), and was so much fun watching you three having so much fun in your new toy! Please, please, PLASE be careful going over those uneven boulders..... you CAN flip over the vehicle if not ultra careful. When we visit Tucson each year for the gem and mineral shows, we leave our motorhome at the campground and rent a low cost small car to go to and from the different venues. That works for us, but if we wanted to really get out and into “the bush”, a toad would probably work best. Mercedes hon, I can see you LOVED riding in that Jeep! Have you taken it out by yourself yet? Tell John it’s a pretty hot, sweet ride! Have fun, be safe, be careful and just love what you’re able to do. Love, Virginia

There are plenty of non-four wheel drive cars that can be flat towed. Motor Home magazine has put out a guide to dinghy towing annually for years listing equipment for towing and which vehicles can be towed. With Motor Home stopping publication for some other form of publication by Good Sam who knows whether this will continue. We to our 2016 Ford Explorer behind our Winnebago class C.

We just traded our 5th wheel for a diesel pusher. My wife wanted a Jeep but after looking at the cost of a Jeep plus preparing it for towing, I bought a new Ford EcoSport for $14.5K, and a new tow dolly and saved 50% or more over the Jeep. Time will tell how well we like or dislike the tow dolly approach :-)

I went to a Cherokee and did a lot of research. Apparently only the Trailhawk model had a transfer case that has a neutral setting. But to add to the complexity, a special harness is required to energize the power steering system while being towed. The jeep is our second toad. First was a subaru forester. Most subarus (and many others brands) with manual transmission are gtg being flat towed. Good pre-purchase research is a must to make sure you don't have problems. You did a good job hitting most of the issues. Brakes are important (We use a brake buddy). I was fortunately able to do all the conversions work myself- plates, wiring for lights (and steering), and breakaway connection. Not mentioned was the fact that toads do consume electrical power while being towed and therefore a battery tender powered thru the umbilical is another necessity.

Loved this video! Just need to be a little more specific because you have a Wrangler. Not all Jeeps can be flat towed. As an example, the Jeep model such as the Grand Cherokee, not all of them can be flat towed even those that are 4 wheel drive because they may be “All Wheel Drive”.

I have a really silly question, but something I was trying to figure out and wrap my brain around the best way to handle while traveling solo. I'm curious if you could go over your process when you arrive at a campground towing a jeep (or any vehicle). Do you unhook the jeep at campground entrance (where you have time and space and not blocking anyone's entry/exit), then drive RV to your site, back it in, then return (walk) back to the entrance area to get the jeep and bring it to the site? I'm guessing you don't drive thru the park while still towing and then unhooking the jeep at the site because wouldn't you be blocking the road for others to get by while trying to do it at the site. Also while traveling point A-B, do you utilize Truck Stop lanes, due to the towing making your rig probably too long to corner around normal gas station lanes?

This is probably already answered before here somewhere in comments but, You need to consult with someone that actually owns an Electric car, I own 2 Tesla’s.. did you know that an Electric Vehicle (EV) can be charged while towing it with your RV, the regen in your EV will charge your battery while you tow it, there are videos on KZbin on this,!check your EV app on your Phone and you can see once you reach your 90% charge, pull your RV over and stop and set your EV to Neutral so your RV can effortlessly pull it, EV’s have LRR tires and this will help pull the car. The Jeep will cause your Rig to spend more fuel. Also I am able to charge my cars with any RV electric source, same as the 30 & 50 amp you are using with your rig. I think that your wife was going in the right direction, how often are you going to be rock climbing? The Electric Smart car would be ideal for the RV life. I would prefer to pull a Telsa Model 3 around instead. So when it comes to EV’s ask someone that owns one, not a Jeep owner.

I have a couple of questions. First what is the weight rating on your hitch? Second how much does your jeep weigh? and third did you know if you get in an accident and your jeep weighs more than your receiver is rated then your insurance will bulk an covering your damages? The reason I ask is because I have a rubicon set up a lot like yours with a tiffin class a motorhome that has a 5000 lb hitch and I couldn't tow my jeep because it weighs too much. Just wondering !
