Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein, the founders of the legendary advertising agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners, deconstruct their best advertising campaigns in their new MasterClass on advertising and creativity. Learn creative storytelling and how to make work that connects with millions from the iconic duo. Whether you’re starting a new company, advertising to millions, or just interviewing for your first job, their energy is infectious and their advice is invaluable.
Learn more about Goodby & Silverstein’s MasterClass at mstr.cl/2GsQOzQ
Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein both started their careers in journalism, with Jeff as a reporter and illustrator at The Boston Herald American, Time magazine, and Mother Jones and Rich as an art director in the heyday of Rolling Stone magazine. After meeting at Ogilvy & Mather under Hal Riney, they started GS&P with Andy Berlin in 1983 and won their first Cannes Lions as an agency for the Mill Valley Film Festival. They went on to win lions across every award and brand category, bridging an unprecedented variety of styles. Their advertising campaigns include “got milk?,” the Budweiser lizards, Hewlett-Packard “Invent,” the E*TRADE monkey, Polaroid “See What Develops,” the NBA’s “I love this game,” Nike “Skateboarding,” and “Sega!”
Since 2000, the agency has excelled at creating work that transcends media. Most recently, it received gold Cannes Lions for “Lessons in Herstory” (an AR project that rewrites history to include women), “Dalí Lives” (a deepfake experience that brings Salvador Dalí back to life), “I Am a Witness” (the first emoji for a social cause), Chevrolet’s Sonic Launch with OK Go, and the Cheetos Museum. In this year’s 2020 Super Bowl, GS&P will have ads for Pepsi, Doritos, SodaStream, and Cheetos.
In this online class, you’ll learn about:
• How to make something out of nothing
• Behind the scenes of “got milk?”
• How to make advertising that lives in culture
• Working with brands
• Goodby’s rules for creative vandalism
• How to tell a story in 30 seconds
• Writing, design, and giving direction
• Is it funny enough?
• How to pitch
• Anatomy of a campaign
• The Super Bowl
• Bringing humanity to the corporate world
• New business: Pulling out all the stops
• How to start an agency

They promote the idea of how humour, creativity and HONESTY are paramount, whereas it's not about manipulation , if you're going to do it right. I went to view just the intro the other morning, and ended up viewing like 70 minutes of this class. Many quote-worthy statements are made throughout the first few or more courses, and within just the first ten minutes, it's made very clear these are the two who should be talking about advertising. I actually plan to revisit the class so that I can write down many of the things said. The editing of the video is even aware of the fact that many of the concise sentences are quality, as a lot of the words out of their mouths appear in typed, dropped-onto-screen letters. (in an ideal font choice; lovely job, masterclass, on making it thematic) You could loathe advertising in its generally presumed concept, and you'd think "OH! This is how it's supposed to be done." Multiple ads they've done are shown, and I actually laughed aloud from each of them, or verbally went "Wooww," because it was so clever. Gooby is pretty much a dude from the hippie era, who's been a writer, and by chance met up with a design nerd from Rolling Stone while they were both out in San Francisco, if that puts a perspective on their mentality at all. If presumption toward advertising ends up common view toward this one, it will unquestionably be the most underrated class of the first half of this year. I can't wait to finish it. I got all access for writing, comedy, and culinary, and I can't wait to finish this one. Unexpectedly entertaining and engaging. A+ move here, masterclass.

Indeed and agreed. I've been nodding in approval to it ever since the political history one dropped. They gave us 2 (or 3?) releases of versatility in just November, followed by Danny Elfman. Also, I watched nearly a third of this one the other morning and it was fantastic.

I just finished watching this Masterclass and headed straight onto here for a quick review. Hope to help people who feel puzzled to go for it or not! My take? Definitely! You'll learn a lot of valuable stuff which are very humane and ordinary, yet witty and extra-ordinary. Most of the concepts are illustrated using quick images and featured videos of their campaigns. I must say they deserve that spot. Few noted ones I loved were Doritos, Cheetos, NotAGun, and of course 'got milk?'. The classes are filled with the unique information of how the whole advertising thing is for everyone, who "Looks at it" and sees the possibility of what it could be, than someone who scratches their head to "Think beyond" and keeps finding what it should be. Ideas are shed over PR factors, Pitching ideas, Starting an Agency, Telling your story, How to be Creative, How to Work with Brands, Cultural Influence and many more. If you feel focused enough to think diversely, this will help you long-term. *Tip: Keep your Pen and Paper close, and write important Sh*t down. Alert! Alert! Value being distributed.* Rating: 5/5

I never post comments. But let me get this out there. MasterClass can be hit or miss depending on the instructor. I’ll tell you right now. You will not walk away from this class without something. Whether you’re a student, entry level or mid-level creative, you will not regret listening to these two legends. If you are on the fence about getting MasterClass this one is for sure worth your time.

You can't learn martial arts via video. You need someone to show it to you in person. Martial Arts is something you learn over the course of years, not 1 Master class. If you are really interested, there are classes in a lot of cities. Search for an actual teacher, not videos.

Working for Jeff and Rich WAS a Master Class…and hard work. If you can get their wisdom without the late nights, GRAB IT. These two men are geniuses. Every single day, I benefit from my time spent at GSP, and it was over a decade ago. Heck, I may just take the class to see what I’ve missed over the past 10 years! I’m sure they have some new nuggets to share. Jeff once legendarily said “Advertising is Art serving Commerce.” No truer words were ever spoken about the business. I’d argue that movies are also art serving commerce, but in a far less honest way…but that’s another topic. In conclusion: Take the class.
