Not a JW, ex or current, but I love your videos. I might be in the tiny minority of viewers who find something about the JW media oddly appealing. Like, the tradition, the stability, and, especially, high-trust, tight-knit community. Just as I start to buy-in a little bit though, your voice chimes in like the funny voice of reality slapping some sense into me. It’s a fun journey that stirs up some feelings I didn’t even know were there. Thanks man.

When I was 12 years old, I unwittingly admitted a pair of JWs into my parents' home (they weren't home) and they started their pitch with pictures and stories of the "imminent end," showing paintings of hundreds of thousands of souls rising from the dead and the end of this world. I listened to them, and finally had to ask, "You really hate this world that much? What can we do to make it better instead of wishing it would end?" They had no answer, so I politely (as polite as a 12-year-old can be) asked them to take their materials and go. I would still ask them the same questions today - 50 years later.

13:40 Even an officially atheist state like China that's notoriously hostile towards its ethnic minorities hasn't tried to outright ban Tibetan Buddhism (they install their own approved Dali Lama, but they don't ban the practice outright), the Hui Muslim (ethnic Han people who practice Islam), or mainstream Christian churches. They require them to register with the government and take pledges of loyalty to the DPRC/CCP apparatus, but they allow mainline churches to function. If even a country as antithetical to human rights as China isn't trying to completely eradicate religion, it's fucking laughable that countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Russia, Greece, Turkey, Sudan, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, or pretty much any country in the Caribbean, Latin America, Central Asia, the Middle East, or the entire continent of Africa is ever going to ban religion. The whole idea's fucking farcical. Even Cuba hasn't banned Santería or the Catholic Church. 😂

@@PokemonRules333 I'm an atheist. Why the fuck would I want people to practice Christianity? Have you ever even read one Wikipedia article about China? Have you ever spoken to a Chinese person from an immigrant background? I literally grew up with mainlander, Taiwanese, and Hong Konger immigrants around me. Anyone who knows anything about China knows that the majority of the population is either irreligious or practices some form of traditional Chinese folk religion, possibly combined with elements of Taoism, Buddhism, or Confucionism since the delineation between religion sects in East Asian religious practice is not anywhere near as discrete as it is with Abrahamic religions. (Look at the syncretization of Shinto and Buddhism in Japan or Confucionism, Buddhism, and traditional Korean Shamanism in Korea.) The CCP did a very good job of trying to eradicate religion altogether during the Cultural Revolution and religious practice in mainland China never really recovered, in notable contrast to Taiwan where religion was never suppressed. If you bothered to even read the Wikipedia article "Religion in China", you'd know that the country is an officially atheist state, as is common for every Communist nation that has ever existed in the history of this planet. Is it finally the end? I’ve been told it’s the end for over forty years, my grandparents were witnesses I grew up with “the truth” back when you got four magazines every month and all the books were hardcover. I’ve studied with elders wives, been to meeting after meeting in lots of different Kingdom Halls but never been officially a member although I’ve been close. One time I tried to go back when I had a young child I had just finished “the first book” you study with these days and moving onto “the second book” when the elders wife began attacking me over my child’s behaviour, pointing out how they had noticed her attending “Christian run” after school programs in the neighbourhood etc and asking me how I expected to be a witness if I couldn’t control my own child. I was on social assistance and living in a government housing unit of which I wanted to get out of both but the elders wife kept telling me to stay when I was and be thankful for Gods provisions for my life, every time I needed help she would point/ ask me if I’d looked for and taken whatever government assistance I could get to solve my problem. She was telling me not be involved with the system and at the same time pushing me to be in the system. They are actually quite mean people when you really truly get to know them and they could care less wither your using the system they tell you not to be in or not.

I totally support your comments! JWs are some of the vilest people I’ve ever known. Very few lived up to the Christian principles they claim to revere. And if anyone needed help they were always directed to apply for welfare, social assistance or food banks etc. It never seemed to cross their minds that Watchtower, for many decades has published nasty articles excoriating the governments and religions as vile and evil and full of unclean things as if they have some kind of god given authority to judge and condemn. Out of the other side of their mouths they tell their needy to apply for sustenance and help from the very institutions they condemn, calling these institutions “Satanic” and fit for destruction! I’ve seen plenty of churches operating soup kitchens during disasters, plenty of church people handing out clothing and blankets to fleeing refugees. But you will NEVER see Watchtower sponsoring relief work for just anybody…. they help only JWs. And then direct them to camps run by the UN, another institution they’ve condemned ever since it came to be!!

Sounds pretty similar to my experience with them. Grew up with but was never baptized. Studied with the circuit overseer's wife...OOooooo. Yea, she couldn't handle my thoughts either. After a while when they can't answer your questions accurately, they start calling you argumentative or insincere, like that's a bad thing. They are nice for a while but they eventually start being pretty judge-y. Also, yea the public assistance thing, Well, they don't really encourage you to go to school, so their whole culture is devolved into a lot of people barely surviving because no one has a good job because they couldn't get an education to do that because, well, Armageddon was coming next month and "you should be pioneering". They lost me as soon as I was an adult, but the fishing lure to get you back in is that you just don't have any other friends when you leave. Sometime ago I challenged him saying for this and told him that I’ve met many people from different religions and they do in fact know about the end times, know that Christ is due to come back and many also know of the “great tribulation” that’ll precede God’s judgement day. He got royally pissed off and actually commanded me to never contact him again! 🤣 JWs are hopelessly mired in all that looney cult speak to the point they can’t even reason or agree with other points of view. I’ve also noticed they are becoming argumentative and surly when you disagree with them now.

JW ideology is that there were always faithful servants who the Bible was written for but as time went on, the earth became more corrupt and satan started spreading false religion. That’s when brother Rotherford came in , in the late 1800s and saw how bad churches were and didn’t use Jehovah name . So he used Jehovah name and spread the good news, thus the name Jehovahs witnesses!

I've never been a JW, but I've grown up with VERY religious parents (specifically my dad). I've always wondered why people view the death of billions of people and the destruction of the entire planet as a good thing--there's no logical reason that would deem that justifiable or necessary by any means. the sins of man don't and shouldn't justify the death of basically the entire planet because of some weird collective mindset. for a god that is supposed to be so forgiving, understanding and omnipresent, I've also never understood why god allows such horrible things to happen, yet losing faith in him is one of the greatest sins one can commit. religion is so weird bruh 💀
@Window45037 ай бұрын
Not JW, but I think your idea of sin is might be the reason you’re confused. Sin isn’t just something petty like cutting in line or eating the last bag of chips. Sin is rebellion against God, manifested in horrible treatment of other humans who are made in God’s image. Sin is really another word for evil, but put in the context of how we relate to a good God. And goodness is not only compassionate but also just and fair. It isn’t loving to allow evil in the world to go on forever. You even said in here that God allows horrible things but in the next breath, you’re essentially against him doing anything about it. Im guessing that your view is that God should just keep people from doing any evil so that he wouldn’t have to do anything about it in the first place. But then this violates free will and with no free will, there can’t be genuine love or goodness because you’d be forced to say and do things. Robots can’t love. So God, risking that, gave humanity free will, which they chose to abuse. But rather than immediately wipe them out (it’s not as if he hasn’t also warned or taught humans…look at Cain and Abel. God warns Cain about what’s going to happen if he doesn’t change his attitude. It’s not like God struck him down immediately even though Cain murdered his own brother. Same goes every time God judges. He always sends people to warn others and tell them to repent and stop doing evil things), he gives them time to change. The people before the Flood had 120 years with Noah warning them. Israel had multiple prophets, with those prophets even warning other nations sometimes. The world has the church. God waits for people to turn from evil and he’s waiting now. The majority of humanity has its entire lifetime to repent. But most don’t while pointing the blame at everyone around them and blaming God for not being just. It’s humanity’s collective narcissism that has continually blamed God since Adam’s first excuse and victimized itself for things we have done and continue to do. But if God corrected evil now, you would be wiped out because God doesn’t judge on a curve. There isn’t some cut off list for what’s “not evil enough”. Any evil is unacceptable. And you know this. You know the impact a mean comment or slur can have on someone. You know how casual sex can ruin relationships. You know that hatred can lead to widespread violence. You know these small evil things lead to bigger evil things and want people to be held accountable but as soon as God gets involved then you say he’s wrong for saying it’s wrong to do those things. I’ve seen the same people who hate God’s justice turn around and call for the death of abusive parents and political tyrants. Meanwhile even though they haven’t reached that amount of evil, they’ll also defend the same mindsets and actions that are connected to its more extreme expressions. You also know that doing good doesn’t completely erase the damage caused. Yet somehow what you know stops being applied as soon as it involves you and the idea of God. God isn’t the one who is confused here. As everyone says, “If you’re doing x, you’re part of the problem.” That’s how sin works. When you sin, you contribute to the evil of the world. And sin creates more sin. And if it weren’t enough, he sent a Savior because humanity is incapable of avoiding sin. There isn’t a day that goes by without having an evil thought or word or action even if it’s socially acceptable. You don’t have to pay for salvation, you don’t have to sing a special song or dance a certain way or sacrifice your video game collection. It is freely yours once you believe it’s true. So not only is God consistent in his justice by punishing sin but he’s consistent in love by offering a free means of salvation and forgiveness, no work required from you. On top of that, you have your whole lifetime along with everyone else to believe the gospel and turn from sin, and you get to do it without having your free will violated; the punishment is simply a natural consequence. If you reject God, you reject goodness itself because all good things come from him and belong to him. I hope this makes sense and that you consider your own place in this. The Bible Project, Mike Winger, and other resources also explain these concepts better than I can in a comment.

@Window4503 Nowhere in my comment did I say anything about how people committing "small evils" should face repercussions, but then backtrack and say that as soon as god is going to cast his judgment, that then no consequences should be given at all--I don't have any idea where you interpreted that from. the point I'm trying to make is that it isn't fair to kill literal billions of people for the collective sins humankind has committed. yes, everyone has sinned, and everyone will eventually pay for what they've done, what they've repented for, and so on; but to have everyone on the planet be killed because of the idea that once someone commits an "evil," it will undoubtedly snowball into greater evils and cause more harm to more people, makes absolutely no sense. that's like if a family member committed a crime, you and everyone else in your family went to jail with them, only due to association/relation. your argument only exists on the premise that things will only ever get worse, not allowing any possibility of someone trying to improve themselves, feeling remorse, and not committing those same mistakes again. of course, it doesn't reverse what happened before, but you can't say that someone realizing they did wrong and are actively trying to better themselves doesn't matter, because they committed some "evil" act. also, the idea that there isn't a limit to what's more or less evil than another thing is absurd, whether it's supported by scripture or not--trying to equate a serial killer to someone who stole, either out of necessity or sheer greed, wouldn't make any sense if you tried to make that argument to anyone on earth, and it doesn't make any moral or logical sense whatsoever. edit: to add to this further, I do personally agree that some people that are absolutely depraved and have done nothing on earth but intentionally cause harm to others shouldn't be allowed to walk this earth any longer, to put it nicely. some people choose to never learn, never repent, and instead relish in the agony and turmoil they cause others--those kinds of people never change and will only be doing a service to anyone by paying the ultimate price. just because I don't agree with some aspects of god's "justice" (me specifically referring to the death of practically all of humanity mentioned in revelations), doesn't mean that I reject the entirety of the idea of sin, repentance, and keeping faith despite difficulties. I'm not the judge, jury, or executioner, but to say that every person is equally as evil as the worst human to scourge the earth, and that they should be punished as such, is insane
