@kamikazesopp4 күн бұрын
He's talking about the translators not bothering to localize the dialogue into natural english, so everything in the game is more or less directly translated from japanese without much thought. They use words like Hope and Despair as if they are nouns and descriptors in this constantly, which is stuff you normally only see in amateur work.
@JelloPlaysVideoGames3 күн бұрын
I'll do my best to explain what I mean. It's common for Japanese > English to be literally translated in ways that don't reflect actual English speech. Abstract concepts like "Justice" or "Despair" have different grammatical uses across the two languages. For example, Persona 5's English localization loves using the phrase "our justice" to refer to the actions of the main characters, the Phantom Thieves. The Phantom Thieves do crimes, but only extremely minor ones that always result in undeniable public good. They basically use magic to change people from evil monsters into good citizens, thus freeing their victims. It's extremely clear to anyone playing the game that what they're doing is righteous. They are the good guys. Many, *many* characters in the game discuss the morality of their actions, including the Phantom Thieves themselves. They will use terms like "They're questioning our justice", or "Ah... So that's your justice", or "We have to prove our justice". This is very weird. No native English speaker would ever say any of these things. The word "justice" is not used like an individualized noun like this in our language. In English "justice" is an abstract concept. It does not belong to anyone. A single person can have a "sense of justice" or a "code of honor" or a "philosophy", but nobody has "Their justice". That's just not a phrase we use. Because of that, a more accurate translation for the term being localized as "Justice" here would be something like "sense of justice", "sense of righteousness", "what you think is right", "methodology", or even "philosophy". You have to change it based on the context in each instance for it to make sense. For example: "They're questioning our justice" ----> "They think we're bad guys" / "They're questioning our intent" "Ah... So that's your justice" ----> "Ah... So that's the sort of thing you care about." / "Ah... I understand your priorities now." "We have to prove our justice" ----> "Let's show them our way is right!" / "We'll teach them what justice really is!" / "Lets prove ourselves!" But that level of localization requires effort. You have to change the phrasing every time the term comes up because it doesn't quite work in English. It's much easier to just use the collective term "Justice", even though it's awkward. For another example, there are phrases in Japanese used to casually address certain types of people, like "oji-san" and "ane-san". "Oji-san" is an informal way used to refer to an older person. It can literally mean "uncle", but it's also used to refer to people the speaker is not related to, even strangers. A good translation of "Hey, oji-san" in English might be "Hey, mister", "Hey, gramps", or "Yo, pops" depending on the level of familiarity, formality, and rudeness the character is speaking with. "Ane-san" is similar. It literally means "older sister", but in casual usage it means an older girl who is sisterly or motherly, sometimes just friendly. English doesn't really have a term for this, so the best you could do for "That ane-san told me" is something like "That lady over there told me." To be honest I think it's usually best to brush over this kind of terminology entirely and write a different sentence that means the same thing. So I might localize a phrase like "That ane-san told me about it" as "Oh, she just told me about it". However, bad translations that don't try will just say something like "That uncle over there told me" or "I wanted to thank the sister over there", which is something you'd never EVER say in English. Yes, that's the literal translation, but it doesn't work because English doesn't use the term "uncle" as a general noun. "Uncle" is really only used as a noun in relation to other things, usually possessive. "He's my uncle." "I spoke with her uncle." You would never say "That uncle over there", even if the guy you're talking about is somebody's uncle. That's just not how we speak.

Ouch, tough luck Jello. You'll definitely rip this game in parts, can't wait. XD I understand you not eanting to play the other games but I would love to see you ripping them out too (even though I think they are way better and actually have some enjoyable parts/concepts). I'm someone who got to know Danganronpa before it got released in the west. It was being translated to English on Something Awful forums and it got popular on Tumblr, even among my friends which got me to check it out too. I do have this like-dislike relationship with the game because I genuinely do find the basic idea/concept of the games fun and do enjoy some characters & story bits (that more in other games), but I am also very aware of its flaws & hate the absurdly anime tropey-ism of it and its characters (especially when it's done for the creepy horny stuff). I personally think Kotaro Uchikoshi (who ironically is good friends with Kodaka, the creator of Danganronpa) pulls of these things better in his games (not perfectly bc I do have criticism about his games too, but at least in his series I rarely get overly fristrated over anime tropey stuff). Uchikoshi is also way better with LGBT rep in his stuff. Like sure, Danganronpa does actually have LGBT characters but... They're usually not the best representation and can even get treated very very poorly. I don't know if it's Kotaka's problem or if as all the characters in the series fall under bad anime tropes, so do the LGBT characters.

So I played Danganronpa 2 and v3 and enjoyed them especially 2 but I never played 1, I watched the anime and had other people playing it as background noise while I was doing other stuff, so I always thought that 1 was also something which I would enjoy as much as 2 and v3. But watching this I'm honestly glad I skipped this one because otherwise I would have probably not played the other games. (Btw I'm not saying that the anime is better but it's faster paced which makes it easier to overlook problems)

Danganronpa exists, for me, in a trinity of series where I recommend nothing about it except the soundtrack. (The other two are Homestuck and made in abyss). Tbh the best way to experience Danganronpa is through NezumiVA's retrospective series. All the heavy hitting story beats, all the neat analysis, and all the worst parts torn apart or minimized

Really excited to watch this video. I've been aware of this series for like 10 years, and it was in my Steam wishlist for lile 6 of them. I finally got to experience this game and its bonkers story when the GameGrumps had their full playthrough a while back, but while the two added a lot of charm to the voice acting and characterisation, they kind of let the ball drop when it came to some of the late game dramatic story beats. Excited to see this game played by some serious voice actors with both comedic and dramatic chops. Good luck guys, gals, and non-binary pals!

So, did some random chatter get banned just because they made a stupid comment about the writing? It wasn't even a spoiler (if this was the one I was thinking of around 1:10:00). I've seen this a few times on the streams, now that I think about it. I understand breaking rules or someone just being obnoxious in the community would call for a ban. But is one comment enough for a "Time to ban you/opinion rejected" approach? Edit/add on: Of course, this stream isn't for everyone and Jello said he's basically shitting on the game. I don't get why others can't as well. (And another person got banned shortly after; Is it a full time ban or a few days timeout?)
@timofeydyudin42264 күн бұрын
Why do you care so much? Was it you who got banned or something like that? Otherwise why have the problem with other people curating their internet communities the way they want to?
@cameronweaver20134 күн бұрын
@timofeydyudin4226 No, I didn't. I don't think I would be able to comment otherwise. Again, there's nothing wrong with a content creator curating their community. I just personally think the way he does it is a bit reactionary. I made that comment right after watching it happen in the VOD instead of just watching more and getting more context.

I'm gonna be completely honest. I went into this game with hope, for fun. Because, I wanted to see how bad this game actually is, and for what reason. Then we got to the Assistant scene, and I just gave up on liking this game. This is such awful writing it makes me physically hurt. This is just the worst game I have seen when it comes to dialogue in my entire life; and to me someone who wants to be a writer it's a massive ego boost that I can just see how poorly constructed this game is

Yup. The writing in this series is disgustingly bad. You could construct a better plot by shredding a dictionary and reading the pile out loud.

Im a big fan of Danganronpa, but the criticisms of it are very valid, especially when it comes to it's repetitive dialogue, the 1 game is especially bad in that aspect. Also, I used to dislike Makoto because I've seen him as a blank player insert, but he's actually pretty fun, because he's NOT "completely average and normal", but he thinks he is and he's meant to be seen as normal for the most part. I actually like seeing people critique/make fun of DR, as long as they're doing it in good spirit and recognize the positives, if that makes sense. I'd love to see Jello dredge through the whole main trilogy, maybe through more donation goals, because I really like the voice acting and the energy of the playthrough so far (I haven't played UDG, so Idk how good it is, just that it's controversial)

This is very refreshing to read. I previously watched the Game Grumps' playthrough of this, and the more rabid DR fans were not happy at all in their comments.
@toadfairy4 күн бұрын
@kamikazesopp I've watched their playthrough too, but I dropped it because I couldn't handle how little attention they paid to ANYTHING in the game, so it makes sense that it caused a negative reaction, the problem is that people on the internet always go too far and nobody deserves the kind of hate you get online just for not paying attention.
