I think my biggest thing with JLO is she was and still to this day markets herself as “real”. Hell one of her biggest songs is called “I’m Real” yet she didn’t even sing on the majority of the song and it’s not even the first “version” of that song it’s a “remix” of another song on her “JLO” album with the same name that also ironically has the infamous firecracker sample that Mariah Carey originally was planning on using for her song Loverboy and we all know what that lead to…. Throughout her entire career Jennifer has always been kind of good at shape shifting her image to fit the trends which is an admirable thing to do but I think in Jennifer’s case, specifically when it came to her music career in the early 2000s the line became a little blurry. First of all, the whole reason she even became famous was for her role in “Selena” which came out only two years after Selena had passed away. Jennifer a Puerto Rican woman played the part of a Mexican woman who was a huge part a Tejano and Chicano culture and at that time because the name “Jennifer Lopez” sounded Latino she was marketed to that audience even if though wasn’t Chicana herself. I know that’s a minor gripe but that always was a little off. She was marketed as this a “Latina” at that time, and songs from her first album like Lets Get Loud and Waiting for Tonight had that “Latin” sound that was trendy in the late 90’s start. Then around the time she started dating Puff Daddy she shifted her image. At this time Mariah Carey was trying to shift her image as well to a more RnB hip hop artist, and that genre had started to become popular on the charts. I think Tommy Mottola was the one who pushed Jennifer to go that route, as it’s been well documented he built her up to knock Mariah down, to compete with her. And so JLO started doing more “radio friendly songs” Literally all of her hit songs from that era (Love Don’t cost a thing, I’m Real remix, Jenny from the block) kept the demo vocalists vocals on the song to layer it with JLO’s most likely because they sounded better and layered with JLO’s made JLO sound like a better singer than she really was. Ive see a lot of people in this comment section try to downplay this and I get why it may seem like a bit of a nonissue on the surface. Madonna had done a similar thing early in her career where she had two background singers singing a lot of the background vocals on some of her hit songs like Vogue and Like a Prayer. The difference with Jlo though was that not only where there various different singers doing the background vocals but they weren’t hired as Jlo backup singers, they were just demo singers. Even though that’s there job as demo singers yes, there is a pattern of the demo singers being mostly black women. So do the math, Jlo is shifting her image to be this “ambiguous” / “exotic” rnb type singer, but she’s not fully singing on those songs, instead its black women. (Also “If you had my love” which was Jlos breakout hit was a ripoff of another song called “if you gave my love” by singer chante Moore (look it up they sound almost identical) all the while claiming to be “real” And her acting career is really not as illustrious as she makes it out to be, she really isn’t the best actress out there but I’m not a movie critic so I’ll let that slide. My biggest issue with JLO is that I see her at so many awards shows accepting an icon award and doing medleys, when a good portion of her singing career (not all of it, but a lot of it) was stolen from other artists and calculated by label executives. that’s what seperates her from her peers, in both realms (acting and music). That to me is my biggest issue, she’s celebrated as this game changing powerful “iconic” person but she had little input a like at least half of her most well known stuff. Ik a lotta pissed JLO fans are gonna be mad but oh well. I will say I have a lot of respect for her as a latino myself but I can’t quite get behind her whole image thing.|
@glamglam83472 жыл бұрын
i find it funny how cocky she was when she was benefiting from a system stacked in her favor (at first)but the min she doesn't get the oscars, grammy, influence and other things associated with being a great star shes throwing tantrums about how she feels snubbed. she was always just another "exotic latina" and they treated her as such. one min you the latina IT girl stealing from black women and throwing them under the bus but now you mad that that same position isn't granting you permission to be taken seriously in an industry that played you up as caricature.

She really didn’t have one nice thing to say about anyone. I think that really speaks a lot about her character. All of those named have achieved much more than her, and I think a lot of success has to do with humility. Selma stuck to her morals and was humble and respectful enough to view the Selena film as more than just a career-booster. J-Lo just comes off as really insecure to me, like she knows she’s mediocre, but she’s trying to overcompensate to make herself believe she’s like Meryl Streep or something. And idk, Ben Affleck has always rubbed me the wrong way and I don’t know if I just rope him with his character in Gone Girl, but he just seems realllllyyy similar to that character in real life. So that also says a lot about her imo. She surrounds herself with snobby people just like herself.

The thing about Jlo is that she is an entertainer that was brought into the industry by a vindictive Tommy Mottola just to get rid of Mariah Carey. Now Jlo is a good dancer and her body is her greatest asset but singing? No. Acting? It depends on the role. She was on fire in the late 90s to early 00s. She was feeling herself way too much, putting down Salma, Cameron, and others like that. You ever notice she always at these award shows she only presents and is never nominated? I honestly feel if Selena didn’t die young Jennifer wouldn’t be where she is today. Not because two Latin women can’t dominate in entertainment but because it was Selena’s biopic that put Jenny with no talent on the Hollywood map. If we’re being real Jennifer doesn’t have a discernible talent in either acting or singing and luckily had the support of Selena’s fan base, the global Latin pop explosion of the late 90s and was one of the few visible Latin women in both the film and music industry. It was all these factors that propelled her to where she is now (as well as her highly public relationships and numerous engagements).

Hot take: Self confidence is damn near non-existent in this age. When people say "I hate my life" or anything negative, the common response is "same" or "me too" instead of trying to lift them somewhere better. Self-depricating humor is at an all time high and being too confident is seen as arrogant. Arrogance is putting others down to feel as if your level is higher than it actually is. There is such thing as over compensation but that's more fake confidence to hide insecurity. Honestly, I FEEL (opinion) that people should exude more confidence (fake, real or exaggerated) so at the very least they can believe in themselves. I am very aware of my abilities and it's hard for me to be "surprised" everytime someone tells me I'm good at somthing I've been training at for years. I feel (opinion) that as long as I'm not an asshole, putting others down, or lying, I should be able to showboat as much confidence as I feel that compliments my talents

I kind of agree with all the critiques she made. But just because Claire Danes did the same role or similar roles there is still more range in the emotion she gives than a lot of JLos acting performances. Jlo is a pretty consistent performer on stage but she hadn't and still has yet to to be at the level Madonna is in her career (she didn't even start touring she was 40 and I wonder why). I don't think Salma always gets enough roles or chooses the roles that would amplify her but she has shown throughout her career that she can be versatile and I respect that Salma turned downed the role of Selena. I think it takes a lot to do that when it certaintly could have boosted her career. But like this video says one could easily give all these critiques to JLo ten times over.

I'm looking at these comments and it's a shame that some ppl really think hustlers shoulda got Oscar nominations??? And yes I'll agree movies like enough and hustlers and obviously Selena are jlos better movies but let's be real how many movies has she done... And how many are good? Or decent or ok... Not that many. And ppl saying hustlers shows her strength as an actor... Eeh idk. If that was the case why did it take her over a decade for her to finally do a more of a decent job at the acting (as she's been in business for over 2 decades) and her doing a better job besides Selena and enough, it's also not just the scripts it's also how good or bad of an actor she is, you can't blame everything on the script if it's just the scripts ppl would say jlo did great but even the script didn't save it and she was the best part of it.. you almost never or rarely hear ppl say that with jlo films...... I wouldn't say hustlers was Oscar nomination worthy.. This is just my take. Plus I'm still shocked how much jlo fooled alot of ppl especially the 00s kids who grew up with her and ppl who listened to 00s music in general. For alot of the 00s it wasn't that known that she stole from ppl unless u were old enough to understand and do research in the late 00s. It's a shame ppl still protect jlo. I don't hate the woman but she sure is not a legend or icon especially not of a generation yk it's bad when I would even consider artists that came out way after jlo like Ariana grande or Nicki minaj more of something of a generation than jlo as Ariana and Nicki actually sings/raps their songs and knows what their doing in music business. Imo the woman who actually sing those jlo hit songs and actually wrote them are the true legends and icons not Jennifer. Also about Selena : the movie: Jennifer Lopez wasn't originally offered it... Salma Hayek was offered it FIRST but turned it down cuz she said it was tasteless for them to do it so soon after she passed... and jlo getting mad Salma said that she Salma was offered Selena first.... when even Selenas dad Abraham Quintanilla had said Salma was offered it first in an interview even as recent as a few yrs ago he still says that..... Idk maybe Jennifer just has a big ego (her nice persona she likes to portray likely isnt real) and she prbly couldn't handle the best movie she's ever been in (her first massive movie where she was lead/first time having most screen time) maybe she couldn't handle that , that movie wasn't originally offered to her first... And reality is... had Salma accepted more than likely jlo wouldn't be jlo "the music legend" without it. Cuz notice the timing how jlo got big in music almost after Selena was a big success. Also I hope jlo wasn't stealing before Selena cuz some ppl do speculate she stole even before Selena... but I think that's just a rumor as theirs only solid proof of her stealing after Selena when tryna be a "singer"... Anyways great video honest! Much respect! You and black femininity tv expose some of the sad truths in the music business and now we know who to watch out for like specifically watch out for ppl who just aren't trustworthy.

Many celebrities in their early days should’ve taken a page out of Beyoncé & Britney’s pr book. No matter how they felt about other celebrities they never made those thoughts publicly known and kept it classy in EVERY situation, and for that their more liked and appreciated.
