From my personal perspective and as a 100% Filipina born in the Philippines, but raised in the Western suburbs of the U.S., I found Laura Jean's Asian spirit to be only hinted at in passing references to her mother and in similar asides, not as a tenet of her characterization. In my observation, Asians who've been raised within the culture of their Asian parent(s), at all, have a fierce loyalty, a debt of gratitude to their Asian parent(s) for surmounting the odds of bringing them to the "land of opportunity" through sheer hard work, putting others' needs and preferences before their own (including American strangers who are "better"), not asking for a hand-out, while at the same time wanting to fit into a highly hedonistic, individualistic, and materialistic society. The psychological dissonance this perpetuates can create whole new mental illnesses. Asian girls will often form a socially-exacasterbated beauty complex from a society whose standards of beauty are predominantly caucasian and therefore promote a model of female dignity and worth that is only derived from this phenotypic beauty standard. They will realize through rejection and exclusion that they don't meet the type and will often develop self-esteem issues and blame themselves for not being "good enough" for the "better" race. That's the story To All the Boys I've Loved Before didn't tell. But that wasn't its goal in the first place anyway. While highly compatible when it comes to common values and needs, at least in Filipino-American marriages, I've personally observed one of the big problems in Asian-White relationships is their having a silent misunderstanding about the importance of closeness to family and the role of beauty equating worth. ... That being said, the crux of the matter is when it comes to a beauty standard, it is something that all girls in all countries will compete against and fail because nobody's beauty is the same. It's a bridge we all have to cross to get to a pasture of a healthy self-image on the other side. Who else relates, or am I writing too unique of a story here? P.S. Girls, you're beautiful inside and out the way God made you. Find out what that is yourself and don't let anyone tell you you're not. Also, don't throw yourself away over a petty, cruel someone who doesn't know what beauty is (their own as well). Love and Peace!

You say that but if we boil it down, the movie is basically a harem of white male with an Asian female lead, no asian male love interest and for the sake of diversity original white character is then black and gay. This movie and the book is just Jenny Han's fantasy of worshipping white male, in the scene where they're watching 16 candles (which is not in the book) really highlights this agenda, in the 16 candle movie scene a Asian male is being humiliated but is ignored because the white character there is hot? Crazy Rich Asians does it far better to be honest, and sadly the only rom com that features Asian characters as a prominent lead

I'm not saying she's wrong about reinforcing Asian leads in RomComs and Teen films, because that is entirely okay. But when an American based conglomerate of Movie studios makes American movies for Americans, they usually use white leads. Just like in Bollywood and other Asian film conglomerates use Indian and Asian leads in their films because they are making cultural movies, for their cultures. Just like how you typically don't see asian leads in American movies, you also don't usually see American leads in foreign films. I also understand that America is place of many cultures, and minorities need a say in these types of things, but I'd just like to lay the cold hard facts out there
@eekaygames6 жыл бұрын
Not the same and there are American leads in a number of foreign films that don't get released in America. Adrian Brody was a lead in a Chinese movie. India and Asia are largely homogeneous societies where the movies are based on their history, culture and their trends. America however is a melting pot. Sure, whites are still roughly 70% of the population but black people are 12% and get heads and tails more representation than Asians, plus Asians get typecast more often to the intellectual characters and seen as non-dominant unless it's a martial arts film. This is not JUST about representation but how its represented. It's not just about getting more Asians in roles its about getting them in lead roles.

You are contradicting yourself. As you said, America is the home to many cultures and ethnicities. We see people from every continent here - and it’s not like these cultures have only immigrated within the past 100 years either. This nation is home to everyone and so our entertainment industry should reflect this diversity and give all cultures opportunities. This is why there’s a greater push for more diverse casts and leads. We’ve made amazing progress - Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther have blown up the box office mainly because of how diverse the casts were and people of those cultures wanted to support. This is only the beginning. We’ll see more change soon so that only seeing white casts will not be “entirely okay” anymore.
@noeldown19526 жыл бұрын
Sounds right, but is actually wrong in principle. Does it mean that only a Russian can play Anna Karenina? I mean, Russian spirit and all. And since when is it acceptable to talk about "Asian" spirit? Asia is large and has many nations, cultures and ethnicities in it. Don't Asian people always call us out on "do we all look the same to you?" Rightly so too. Now I'm ethnically white European but I'd never speak about "white European" spirit because it's racist. Why is it then acceptable to insist on "Asian spirit"?

Getting tired of constant race talks. Race is a made up construct to empower the divisions in slavery. Ethnicity is a completely different matter that is actually relevant. However, we are never going to have an accurate representation in shows or movies because there are too many variables. I'm not white or black but those are the two predominant groups represented in movies. Latino and asian groups are disproportionately represented in media and the characters are usually the same stereotypes. Latino males are either criminals or funny people but hardly ever scientist or very educated and asian men are usually the opposite. Women usually get placed based on their attractiveness and that is also a flawed method. I just want to see more everyday joe type of characters that represent more people equally and not just one ethnic group or another. Is this not the melting pot of the USA.

There are enough rich Asian people, that they can produce movies starring Asian actors and Asian culture based storied movies if they think they will sell. Remember, for the rich, the movie company executives, it's not about race, it's about MONEY. It's always about MONEY. That's all they care about. They'd make a movie with an all Aboriginal cast speaking in their own language if they thought it would sell. This is the same complaint that we had with black people complaining that there weren't enough black movies, black TV shows, etc., then the complaints about not enough gay movies, TV shows, etc.. There are plenty of minority rich enough people out there that have the money to make movies, plays and TV shows if they think the market is there. So if you aren't rich, then you should find a rich person who is of the appropriate minority group, and write to them to get them to payroll a movie/play/TV show with the particular minority group that you want.
