my German Oma made this every Christmas, poppyseed and walnut. I made 2 of each today, I like to send as gifts, and this is closest to my Oma's bread ever. I do use jarred poppyseed filling but add some walnuts, chopped dried apple, 2 tbsp orange marmalade and golden raisins. The walnut filling the same ingredients but 2 egg whites beaten to stiff peaks and folded in, just what Oma did. I think they hold the walnuts filling together. Thanks Jenny!

I'm a guy well over 50 ... :-) from a child's eye perspective ... This was the poppy seed roll that made my aunt May the most awesome cook in the world. All other cooks are in the shadow of her greatness! We would beg our mom to take us over to her house often for this treat and also her poppy seed pies and kolaches. She had many flavors for many types of pies and pastries. The poppy seed roll was my favorite. Thank you for bringing back those wonderful childhood memories!

You know most people knew how to cook and bake before the industrial revolution! They didn't even have to go to any college for that. Your recipes are so easy to follow and thank you so very much for helping me get started again. My german oma used to make this and bread and spaetzle and damfnudel and all types of wonderful food right on her wood burning stove and oven right before our eyes. We can do this people. Thank you Jenny! I appreciate your recipes and videos so much. They are also very fun to watch.

Hi JENNY, so nice to see you make this old favorite of mine. My late mother used to make this a lot, but she always used the wet poppyseed filling that comes in a jar in the grocery store. It's in the grocery store in the pie filling section. She also used it to make " Homentashen" for the Jewish Holiday of Purim. I have also bought this in the Russian grocery store. I love it so much. They roll the dough very thin so the end result has many, many layers. It also used to make me sleepy after I ate it. LOL

I'm definately trying this. That's triple the size of one I occasionally buy at the Polish deli for a ridiculous price. My Aunt in Poland made this 25 yrs ago. She made several and I ate an entire one myself because it's my favourite delicacy.
@helenabrus1914 жыл бұрын
I too must confess that I have eaten a whole one; but it's been many years as no one carries this in my town and I am not about to pay $25 for one to be shipped (yes, I'm cheap, but I'm Polish).

I love watching fellow home cooks/bakers so their thing, oopsies and all:) I grew up with this bread (and nut bread, too!) and now, at the age of 50, I am determined to make and share this with my extended family over the holidays. As a kid/teen, I always preferred the more sugary-sweet icing cookies and all the rest during the holidays, but THIS Poppy Seed roll, along with the Nut Roll, always stayed with me. Ingredients: Dough: 1 1/2 cups bread (or all purpose) flour 1 packet (2 tsp/7 gms/1/4 oz) yeast - instant or active dry yeast 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 2/3 cup milk (I use 1% or 2% low fat milk) heated to 120-130° F for instant yeast (or 110-120°F for active dry) 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil 1 egg about 3/4 cup extra flour Filling: 1 cup poppy seeds 1/3 cup boiling water 1/4 cup ground toasted almonds (20 count) 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla zest of 1/2 a lemon & 1/2 an orange Instructions: Grind poppy seeds (see note below). Place in a small bowl, stir in boiling water & let stand uncovered. Grind almonds and set aside. Place flour, yeast, sugar, & salt in large mixing bowl. Stir in milk followed by oil & egg. Beat on high for 2 minutes. Stir in extra flour until dough forms a mass. Place dough on floured board and knead 100 turns (about 2 minutes). Cover & let rest 10 minutes. Meantime, add ground almonds, sugar, vanilla & zests to poppy seeds. Roll dough into a 10 x 12 shape. Spread filling almost to edges, roll starting at 10-inch end and place on parchment-lined baking sheet, seam side down. Pinch and tuck ends under. Cover with a towel and rise in a warm spot for 1 1/2 hours or until double in size. Preheat oven to 350° F and bake for 35 minutes. Cool for 10 minutes & drizzle with glaze (1 cup powdered sugar + about 2 Tbsp. milk, added slowly) (Another option): Before baking, you can brush with eggwash and sprinkle with poppy seeds.
