I worked on Star Tours at WDW in 2008. Since it was just a few years after the prequels wrapped up and our ride was basically a place for people to sit in air conditioning after leaving the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, absolutely no one cared what we did. Even though we were essentially flight attendants, they gave us all lightsabers. We wore the same parachute pant costumes from when the ride opened in 1989. When it rained and they had to cancel Jedi Training Academy, Darth Vader and the Stormtroopers would march around the ride and walk into the sims while we were trying to load them. And even though it was the most fun I've ever had at a job, we'd all sit around and brainstorm a Star Wars Land where we could be in character, drink blue milk, and not have to wear parachute pants (can you tell I hated the parachute pants?). Getting to visit Galaxy's Edge at DL was an amazing experience because I got to see all of those dreams brought to life. I just wanted to sit there and take it all in, and I noticed the lack of benches and other areas to rest as well. It's a shame Disney put so much effort into creating such an immersive experience, only to make it impossible to truly lose yourself in the world.

Eileen Herbert I just made my own rules and sat on the floor right next to the blue milk stand. No one’s gonna stop me from relaxing and taking it all in. 😂 It turned out to be a good idea, too, because then Kylo Ren came out and insulted my allegiance.

Just curious, but do you feel that Galaxys Edge feels a bit like fanfic? Instead of Tatooine you get Batuu. Instead of seeing Luke you get a made up one named Vi. Instead of Han Solo you get Hondo from Clone Wars. (Its like that awkward feeling you get when you go to Six Flags and see 1990's era Superman in the wrong costume, or you go to Universal and get that weird padded light blue Captain America. Um... we know what these characters look like.) The theming is amazing but Batuu does feel like a land where a bunch of licensing deals fell through so they couldn't build the land that the people actually wanted. So instead of chasing down Leia for a picture we're stuck trying to small talk with Vi despite not knowing a single thing about what she's talking about.
@eileenherbert8607
@eileenherbert8607 5 жыл бұрын
@@kittyk8999 My answer to this is slightly complicated. Would I like a theme park attraction that only references Luke/Leia/Han i.e. focuses solely on the original trilogy? Yes. But Galaxy's Edge wasn't made for me. It's an area in a children's theme park aimed at 9-year-olds. 9 year old Star Wars fans watch Clone Wars. They know who those characters are. It would be weird and alienating (no pun intended) to their main audience to only include references to episodes IV-VI in Galaxy's Edge. It also promotes visibility for their current projects, rather than past (not saying that's good OR bad). And in general, I didn't get the feeling of anything being knock-off or off-brand about GE. Everything seemed thought-out and cohesive, to the point where I wasn't thinking "Where are the characters I already know?" It just read to me as an expansion of the Star Wars universe.

I’m glad you mentioned the health impacts of project stardust. As someone with a disability that prevents me from walking long distances without lots of breaks, eliminating all the places to comfortably rest means that I have to use a wheelchair if I want to go. While this seems like not a big deal to some people it really does change the experience. Instead of being free to move at my own pace, I am subtly a burden all day. It is hard to describe the feeling that comes with trying to fit in all day but knowing everyone would have more fun if you weren’t there. It may be “just a bench” to some people but for me that’s the difference in independence. I would suggest the idea of floating benches/seating as an option. Perhaps a large structure that has pieces that come off that can move around for seating but can be returned to multiple structures in the area. That way on the busiest days the amount of seats can be limited. Or maybe they are tethered to the large structure in some way. They could easily get so creative with it! By having flexible seating it is never stuck in the path. I’m picturing some kind of themed stools that are on a track underground with a maze of options where you can push them. Picture an office chair but the only part above ground is the chair itself. There are just so many options they can choose. Hopefully they will realize the error soon so less people have to suffer

as jenny was describing it i kinda got the feeling that this may be something they just intended as temporary (maybe for the first year or so when they expect the most traffic), and then planned to add more seating/resting options to relax after the initial spike in interest they'd anticipated dies down.. as someone who's cared for elderly family, i know how difficult just a simple task like getting them through a day at the dmv can be, so i certainly HOPE that's disney's plan.

Yeah, I'm the same. Personally, I prefer to use a wheelchair when I go to theme parks since it means I can get a lot more done and I'm not in pain by the end of the day but it can definitely be limiting sometimes. Especially since a lot of disabled people don't realise they can/should use a wheelchair even if they can technically walk. I used to push myself way too hard when I was a teenager and I would have definitely hurt myself real bad if I went to a park without any benches back then.

The last time I went to the park was two years ago, and I pushed myself way too hard, found barely anywhere to rest and I wound up bedridden for 2 days afterwards because of it. Granted that was mostly my fault for not knowing my limits or listening to my body, but the fact that when I did know that I needed to rest I would have to backtrack to the nearest restaurant in order to do it certainly didn't help and made me feel like I may as well just keep going.

100% agree on roaming characters leaving a more lasting impression on children. When I visited Disneyland Paris in the late 90s, all the popular characters had Meet and Greets, but the 3rd tier characters were pretty much all still free range and could sometimes even be found at the hotels: When I think of meeting Mickey Mouse, I remember standing in line for almost 2 hours, desperately needing to pee for most of the wait. I have no recollection at all of meeting Cinderella, though must have, because I got her autograph. What I DO still vividly remember is Little John casually strolling into the lobby of our hotel, hugging the handful of kids that ran towards him all at once and goofing around with Tweedledum and Tweedledee, two characters I didn't even know at the time in Fantasyland. So yeah: More roaming characters please! It adds so much to the athmossphere even if you don't directly interact with them.

I get that parents want their kids to get to see them and this is the quickest and most efficient way, but you’ve really lost the charm and authenticity. As someone with a physical disability that is invisible from the outside (no obvious signs) but manifests in my body being unable to stay upright for extended periods of time, thank you for calling out how problematic a lack of benches is for some of us. It seems like it's not that big a deal, but it actually really is for some people. I will pass out if I can't sit down, at a certain point. So in Star Wars Land, I guess I'd be sitting on the ground. It actually IS ableist of them to do that, just ... ableist against a group of disabled people that everyone likes to pretend don't exist anyway. (You can google chronic intractable migraine, dysautonomia, chronic fatigue syndrome, or invisible disabilities for more info on the kinds of disabilities I'm talking about here, among others. Long covid is the newest of this type.) Likewise, thank you, Jenny, for being so casual about "guests with sensory issues" who loved the petting farm because they need a minute, because that is also me - another way my disability manifests. Some of us love to be out in the world, but the world is too much at times - literally, physically - and just being able to sit it out for a hot minute, get our bearings, or let our medical conditions calm down, and then get back into having fun makes all the difference. It makes having fun in places like Disney possible at all. Hearing someone talk about these issues like they truly and obviously matter, like it isn't "pandering" to care about people with disabilities, is humanizing. I've seen this video at least half a dozen times, and it hits me every time. Thanks, Jenny. You're a real one.

That comment about caring for minorities being seen as "pandering" is a really good description of a concept that I have a hard time explaining to some people. It can make you feel like trash hearing people complaining about something that greatly improves your life because they see it as pointless SJW virtue signaling just meant to inconvenience anti-woke patriots like themselves. I transitioned to male several years ago. I have never once called out anyone for misgendering me, even coworkers who do it relentlessly to this day (even though other coworkers have completely forgotten I was ever female). Yet I still have coworkers who will do a bit where they intentionally call a mixed group 'guys' just so they can go on a rant about not being "allowed" to say that anymore, even though nobody ever objects. It can really ruin the vibe of your whole day and makes you feel like less than an afterthought. Like basic consideration for your situation is a joke and annoyance to others.

I know you already discussed the benches, but I consider them almost as important as a restroom. Sure, people want to relax and admire their surroundings. But more than that, it can be a health concern, especially those who can't be in the hot sun or walk for long periods of time. These parks should be for everyone, but by lacking benches and shaded areas, they are discouraging disabled, older, and other guests from having fun too. Hopefully they add some :)

@@ericspencer8093 keep in mind disney's theme parks have a reputation among wheelchair users and other disabled people for being some of the most accessible. not perfect by far, but better than most of the alternatives. so it's a huge disappointment that they're consciously making decisions to reduce basic accessibility in favor of maximizing volume of ablebodied patrons. we're not surprised, because being left behind in favor of profits is the capitalist disabled experience. but it's still infuriating that we're constantly having to fight for these basic things. anyway, fuck disney.

(Note: doesn't have to be a theme park for that to happen - just needs kids with a large area and no real time or place for rest.)

as a disabled person the idea of having no benches to sit on in Disneyland of all places sounds like actual hell. I'm all for crowd control but I feel like there's another way, right? the lack of thought/care into accessibility for disabled ppl is unsurprising and disappointing, no wonder disabled people (myself included) dislike amusement parks.

Your comments about the benches and the mentality of people who are stressed out about making the most of their visit to Disney is one of the most insightful things I've ever heard about what it's like to be at the park. I had a great uncle who worked at Disney in Orlando in security for probably 20 years, and he always made these ominous comments about how people who tried to do too much ended up ruining their time at the park. Your bit about the benches tied all that together.

The guy with the water bottle is most definitely the one controlling the free roaming robot. When I was a kid Tomorrow Land in Disney World had another free roaming Robot named “Push” because he was robot garbage can that would roam around to talk to people (his name was push bc that’s what it says on the garbage cans). My dad is a big Disney park nerd so he was able to pick out who in the crowd was controlling push. Most of the time they’re wearing park merchandise to disguise themselves as other guests and they have a side bag that their hand is in because that’s where the controls are. I was 4 in my stroller talking to push and my dad found the guy and told him my name was Catherine. The guy got VERY panicked bc his cover was blown and quickly got away from my father but used the info he was given anyway and called me by my name and I nearly shit my pants bc this talking trash can knew who I was. I absolutely love this story. Push isn’t there anymore because Disney’s contract ended with the people who built him which is why I was so excited for the robots in galaxies edge. Oh well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

@@Mr_Bones.Nobody said they're actively anti handicapped or that they outright hate the handicapped, just that they care more about money than making people comfortable. And many of us think that's sad. That's the point being made. @WhoWouldWantThisName
@WhoWouldWantThisName 5 жыл бұрын
@@Mr_Bones. Benches are not a costly piece of equipment or high maintenance. Even people without handicaps can need to just sit down and take a break. Most of us are also coming there from cooler climates and the heat alone will tire people out. The theme park experience can actually be more stressful than fun for many, especially parents. Also, like Jenny said, it's clear they are trying to move everyone through there as fast as possible to get the next wave through. They don't want to encourage people to really take it in. They just want us to get in and get out so as not to crowd the park. Obviously this was expected to be a much more popular vacation attraction than it is. While most of us planned to not go for the first year or two, at least in part because of this, there are still other reasons for it's lack of appeal. I would say that the limitations on time is probably one of the biggest. Do I want to go there at those prices to spend only 4 hours when each line will probably take an hour to get through? They need to shift focus to making people feel appreciated and welcome. We need to feel like we are the reason for the park's existence and it's not there despite us. The more I learn of it the less excited I am to go. Hell, even I would like a place to just sit down if I want. I'd probably just jump their damn gate and sit on their precious stairs.

Kat Stewart I didn't say that, it's just that a lack of benches very specifically takes away the abilities of disabled people and people with decreased mobility to visit the park altogether! And as an autistic person who loves the parks, my rare trips are often incredibly overwhelming when I can't find a quiet place to destim. While everyone benefits from benches and a quiet place, it's absolutely essential and often a deciding factor in a disabled person's daily decisions! No harm in pointing that out. "My legs hurt, I wish I could sit somewhere" is valid and can make a day less fun, but it's still different from "I physically/emotionally can not handle a day at Disney because of accessibility issues that should be incredibly easy to address". Two different situations with different outcomes
@FiddlebirdBlue
@FiddlebirdBlue 5 жыл бұрын
@@katsdraws I'm with Adult Cool. Of course everyone needs benches! Don't be silly/weirdly defensive. But just for one personal example that isn't even the worst-case scenario, I have fibromyalgia and a few hours of constantly standing on hard pavements without any form of reprieve will break me like Bane broke Batman. How, you may ask? The pain in my feet, knees, hips, and lumbar spine will reach the point that it *literally* feels like my joints are splitting apart. The pain will become so intense that I break out in a cold sweat and start hyperventilating as I struggle to maintain my composure, and there's a very real possibility that I'll collapse like a leaky blow-up lawn Santa. Sure, there's a few planter edges and crates, but they will be hotly contested, and there is nothing quite as fun as being 26 and looking 16 and being slightly overweight and looking perfectly healthy and having to ask someone "May I please have your seat? I have fibromyalgia/a disability," and then even if they don't tell you to screw off they look disgusted because they assume you're lying and want to sit just because you're lazy (y'know, because I'm mildly overweight and I don't have, like, crutches). Also a lot of people think fibromyalgia is psychosomatic (starts 'in your head') or just plain not real, so I have been given many a flat "no" and once, "How is that *my* problem?" Even if they're nice about it I feel bad asking some hardworking parent to move so I can sit next to their kid or elder. It's awkward and it makes me feel like a burden to society, which I am not. Now cut to me crying from sheer pain and because I spent the last *two years* saving up for this trip while my mom stresses out and tries to find us a place to sit that isn't the bare pavement or a flowerbed and assures me that I'm not acting like a child, my suffering is valid, but being comforted by my mom only makes me feel more childish and meanwhile the pain is somehow, incredibly, getting impossibly worse. Assuming that I have yet to keel over, crack my head on the pavement, and be carted off by a squad of legendarily fast Disney medics. (Yes, I have fallen from pain and hit my head before. Not good.) Obviously I could avoid this by lowering myself all the way to the ground painfully and with great effort, accepting whatever comfort solid pavement has to offer, and then slowly and painfully standing back up, but I would have to do this many times and it would attract attention. I'm sure I would occasionally luck into an unoccupied shipping crate or whatever just when I needed it, but more often it would be the "May I please sit? Here's private medical information!" attempt, which, remember, is humiliating and not always successful. I might try to perch on railings when I can, but the hard metal poles tend to dig through my thighs enough to put direct pressure on my achey bones, so ... not a vast improvement over standing. I'm sure there are ways to deal with these problems, but I've been diagnosed for less than a year so I'm still adapting. If anyone says "then don't go places!", you can go screw. Just imagine having to put *your* life on hold and miss out on positive experiences because of the negative experience you're trying to keep from consuming your young life. So, yeah. Worst-case scenario is a serious medical event, and best-case is that because of the insufficient benches, I would spend the whole day aching, worrying, plotting, watching others so I can rush in when they get up, trying not to cry from embarrassment or frustration or pain, trying to act like everything is fine so I don't negatively impact the experience of any of the innumerable children all around me, etc. Perhaps you can see how it's a wee bit worse for for folk with disabilities, and that's why we get special mention when seating comes up. Not because *only* we need seating. But because only we need it to the point that it can *that* seriously f**k up not only the entire goddamn expensive experience, but our health. Barring extenuating circumstances, most able-bodied folk will be cranky and uncomfortable (which is not good!) but not, you know, in AGONIIZNG pain and/or the hospital. If anyone still wants to fight me on this, you better sit and really, genuinely try to imagine the sensation of "your joints splitting apart from the inside, causing pain so severe your heart races and you're soaked in cold sweat" before you marshal your arguments. And again, I'm not even a case of greatest need!!!

I've passed by that pond with the mine entrance for thirty years, I never knew it used to actually be part of a ride.

Lack of benches is incredibly ableist. Like for disabled people being able to sit down is good for peeps with sensory issues (as Jenny noted as a positive the petting zoo) to take a bit of a break. People with mobility issues may need these sitting areas, and it’s also just good for people to stay, take in the scenery, etc.

Even those without disabilities would like to sit down and take a break after a long day. Also, what if someone is on the verge of passing out or gets sick? Should they just sit/lay on the floor?

It's hostile to everyone! Especially those that rely on benches

@@grylltheonion benches ultimately of course benefit everyone, but disabled people may physically not even be able to sit down on the floor or get up again. for an able bodied person, a lack of benches and other areas to relax or take breaks is inconvenient and uncomfortable, but for some disabled people it may straight up mean not being able to go

plus with all the walking that people do, it's practically inviting injuries or mobility issues to be exacerbated

I think Jenny stole Buzzy partly (PARTLY, I said) because, on top of loving the boy, she wanted to take vengeance on Disney for closing HER petting zoo. Two birds, one stone. It's a tense love-hate relationship between one girl and an entire mega company. The story is still developing...

Ok this is an old comment but hear me out: We need a Jenny x Disney high-up/CEO stand-in fanfic. Like 50 shades but without the sex.

@@Rushboat Wow, I didn't get notification for your comment, (maybe because the post is old?) so this is kinda serendipitous. Uhmmm, there's a lot that's creepy with 50 Shades besides the soulless sex stuff, but I think I get where your head's at... Since it's fan fiction, you can just have it be Walt's cryogenically-frozen-then-reanimated head (like Nixon in Futurama) screwed onto a giant porge-esque plushy body; and no one ever brings attention to that cute and gruesome fact, it's all just played straight despite the ridiculous inhuman horror of it...so...yeah, basically 50 Shades without the sex. You were right the first time. I should've listened.

@@Rushboat this fits in perfectly Christian Grey even has a characteristic obsession with trains - clearly a reference to the famous businessman, Walt Disney

Not only did she get a revenge on Disney by stealing *The Boy*, and actually getting *The Boy* himself, she also got a video out of it.
