I've fished these waters many times over the last 45 years. Now at 63 years old it's getting harder and harder to get down there. I thank you for the opportunity to tag along today. Be safe and enjoy !!

I've fished the Ram all my life. The stretch known as 'The Gorge' was particularly my father's favorite stretch to fish. I remember one year, my brother and I almost getting run over by a pair of muley bucks in full velvet, right along the banks where you filmed this. Thanks for invoking so many good memories.

What a neat moment for you. That stuff really sticks with ya and to be able to jog that memory for you is wonderful. Hope the rains subside this summer and you manage to get a few really great times on that river.😊

I have been bighorn sheep hunting the south ram river for 40 years, farther up the river not to far from Ram Glacier. The fishing farther up is pretty good but i must say the Canyon view is impressive. 40 years ago we always had a snack of cutthroat for one nights meal . We always said it was to save a pack horse but they sure tasted great. All the creeks like Ranger Creek have plenty of Cutts, the downfall of the area was the invention of ATVs . Thanks for your advocacy for the Bighorn Rec Area.

I'm still not sure making the reaches above the ftr c&r was needed given the access rules and the outdoor experience of who uses it up there. That reach is the one where access control and seasonal use precludes too much risk of over harvest and taking away the outdoor experience of a small fish fry is maybe a detriment and gov over reach by a biologist that made a mistake in opening a can of worms he shouldn't have. Love the waters up top, including that gorgeous spring 😊🥰

Thanks for the beauty work. I didn’t realize the big hand you played in the protection acts out that way. I grew up on the Red, now I call the upper old man my home waters. Cutty fishing is something special. Thanks, Jensen’s!

Ah, it was all a good effort back then and I really hold a passionate soft spot for the Ram and its cutts. I miss those simpler days but not the ongoing conflict with gov nor industry. Hopefully people can see the games at play with gov and our land use / fisheries depts and realize the fight is long from over and may ultimately require additional species with climate change - the Ram is really one that we can play with given the lack of native spp should climate change shift things. I know, damn the thought but over the coming decades it's a possibility. But the same conservation rules will certainly still apply.

Special spot for you guys for sure. I have gotten off on the wrong foot with this river and tribs I can't seam to find the access that isn't over run by idiots and the kind of people that ruin my day. Maybe this August I'll finally find a quiet spot on that river that still holds fish and provides a quiet surreal experience like I used to enjoy on other epic streams down in the SW corner of this crazy province. Thanks for sharing your day on the water.

It's sometimes about walking a little further and picking your times as to when you choose to go. Of course there's no absolute to anything, but sometimes early fall when kids are back in school can see less people. Of course with the pandemic the past year few years that didn't hold true, but might moving forward. I hope you get to enjoy it for you at some point.

Good video, also a lot of great info. As an avid stream fisher here in BC where the practice is not used, one thing I've just never understood is the double dry/nymph "dropper" or whatever you call it setup. I get that it likely catches more fish, but it seems as if would just take away from the pure simplicity that fly fishing is to me....trying to find the perfect fly, getting the perfect presentation, the anticipation, and the reward when you get it all right. Don't get me wrong, I like "catching" fish...but to be honest, the less is more "fishing" part is my favorite thing about fly-fishing. Just an honest question...what happens if or when you do hook two fish at a time?
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 2 жыл бұрын
But if you fish a nymph with an indicator you are fishing a dry dropper. An indicator is no less or more fly fishing than a dry dropper, just the dropper system is the faster conversion to nymphing. We tend not to get 2 fish at the same time because we tend to target specific fish in specific lies, which is why you see the fish in our videos - we don't just go and fish to catch fish, we hunt interesting fish in interesting lies in order you can see them. Which of course leads us to say we don't 'just fish', rather, share interesting fish that are specifically found... much harder than just fishing to catch something. 😊🍻

if the GOA hadn't carte-blanche assigned FMAs and other long-term, landscape-wide based permits and allocations with the most basic of basic operating ground rules, these companies wouldn't be able to do as they do. We've been fed the lie that there isn't one culprit in our deteriorating landscape and habitat in Alberta, that there are hundreds of causes and effects. That... is a lie perpetrated by the one foundational cause of everything: the government of Alberta itself in what it allows.
@Mattymu
@Mattymu Жыл бұрын
@jensenflyfishing Alberta is not the same place that I moved to in 2002. At that time the government seemed to be focused on the preservation of parks and wild lands as well as access and free use for all people. Now returning to my beloved Peter Lougheed provincial park (of which I worked as a trail maintenance worker untill 2010) I see it is becoming run down and clearly underfunded or mismanaged. I have also learned that parks are going to a privatization model with juicy contracts being doled out to the ones favored by government. Furthermore, having to pay permits for day access to these areas is a slap in the face to all Albertans that were promised these areas were to remain free for all to use. I havnt even gotten started on the continued destruction of my beloved old man river headwaters through needless and senseless clear cutting. The greed is shocking. These forest are worth their weight in gold in 2023 when will the government wake up?
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing Жыл бұрын
@@Mattymu the same has been said since the 1970s on a provincial scale as we've collectively elected the same gov over and over and over, which essentially has allowed the painful % decline in each 4 year term. Where we're headed in Alberta is a series of "pay your outlandish fees and stay on this trail so you don't see the coal mine beyond that 30m tree buffer" after having hopped a shuttle in YYC to get to the trailhead. Where things will be for coming generations is absolutely shocking, esp compounded by our population boom. It is just the beginning of the "turned on our heads" coming generation as it pertains to our environment and public allowances.

I believe this day we had a 4 and a 5 wt rod with us. Either are pretty much our go-to rods for most streams. The 5 is slightly better for casting of heavier nymphs and handles wind better.

What is your boot & wading pant setup?
@jensenflyfishing
@jensenflyfishing 2 жыл бұрын
I use a quick dry pant and typically a hiking shoe (Keens) that fits my feet well as I like to feel my way along the river so I can be looking for fish more than not. I've found most wading boots to not fit me the way I need them to.

Yes it is. Given what I've done for it and the ongoing need, this video as well as the others we've published go hand in hand with what I hope is inspiration to fish it as well as sharing the need to get involved to protect it. I hope you do. All the best. 🍻

That's the trained rhetoric, isn't it? It's not logging, it's the manner and politics of the logging - there is zero need to have opened access to the entire region, nor is there any reason to log to the edge of the canyon, etc. If you're looking to argue, please go elsewhere as you simply will not win any argument on this channel.

So what is your answer to most of Alberta's Eastern slopes, the entire S Island of NZ, most headwater streams in N America, and most floodplain, braided rivers globally, where any retention at all will collapse populations given many of our freestone rivers have 10 - 50 trout per km?
