Jeremy said they had so many OUTS to leave. But I always think of another line of dialague from 2011 The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, when the killer said " people are more afraid of hurting somone"s feelings than trusting their intuitions to say no thank you" or something like that. That always stuck with me.

It's like someone already said, in the original the characters weren't dumb, they were just cowards. Spineless cowards. The director wanted you to notice the outs, to show that moment of choice where the characters couldn't, or wouldn't, act. The original felt like the director wanted you to leave hating the parents. The audience recognizes the moments they could get out, but the audience literally can't act. The actual characters can, but don't.

I haven’t seen it in a while but I remember really loving it until the characters started doing dumb things such as [SPOILERS!] - going back for the stuffed animal. That was more stupid than cowardly, unless I’m forgetting if there was more of reason than just that for going back. There was some other stuff near the end too that made me a bit disappointed. I’ll have to give it another watch.

Haven’t seen the original but I loved in this one when the couple said “why are you doing this?” And James’ character said “because you let us…?” That made this movie for me. The honest response of “you’re dumb tourists that share too much personal information with strangers” 😆💀

Yeah I think if they cut out like 2-3 moments of the movie (like the first time they left) it would have been more consistent. And I didn’t like the unevenness of the wife willing to stand up and the husband absolutely not. Wished it was more balanced between the two.
@christopher4287
@christopher4287 6 күн бұрын
The first strike I had against this version was the violence in the trailer. In the Danish original you never see the family defend themselves until it’s already too late, and even then it amounts to nothing more than protestations as their child is literally taken out of their hands. That’s why the insidiousness of the antagonists hits so hard when they’re asked “Why are you doing this?” And the man replies “Because you let me.” Even then you don’t detect much malice-it’s old hat, Tuesday night. The original is probably better. Might catch this on streaming.

Hated the Danish version because absolutely nobody behaves that way. The English version at least has the wife representing the audiences thinking even though her husband is a limp noodle. I also thought the Danish version was hamfisting Aryn Rand politics down our throats. And finally, James McAvoy killed it.
@christopher4287
@christopher4287 5 күн бұрын
@@jakestroll6518 I totally understand your perspective and I mostly agree with your opinion. It is frustrating to think anyone would be so impotent in these situations. But, I disagree that no one acts that way. There are many documented cases and studies of people who either allow victimization of others or themselves out of a social fear of being othered or cast of the group. If you watch the film Compliance you might have the same reaction “nobody behaves that way”. Because in that film you see multiple people victimize and humiliate a young woman at the behest of an unseen individual speaking over the phone. And you would think that could never happen. Until you learn that the entire thing was adapted from an actual case-along with dozens of similar documented incidents-that really transpired. I still need to see this new adaptation. I believe McAvoy kills it-he’s pretty great in everything. But I’m still not convinced this movie is going to convey the true horror of the original: that polite, modern, civil individuals are weak and vulnerable against real predators.

@@famousthaneus9810 agreed. I don’t know if I would have cared to see it (the original danish version) if I didn’t have the film mostly spoiled first. Afterward, I was really intrigued to see it. Did not seen the remake. But, in the original had sparked some similar discussions about the validity of main characters actions. Therefore, I guess it sticks pretty close to original’s story. In the original the point was that main characters were wet blankets, dealing with charismatic and evil people. They were polite to the point of being annoying. And, it was a movie about what happens when you don’t listen to your instincts. Also, the psycho couple gives the main pair outs ALL THE TIME, just to test them. The point is they don’t take them, and their are just submissive all the time. Because it is a metaphor y’know, of what happens when good people do nothing.

I don't see why it's a problem. Needed? No. But no movie is. It's a win-win. If the remake is halfway decent and popular, then the original is likely to get a lot more exposure. Especially from the "just watch the original" crowd. These remakes don't replace the originals. And no one who would have actually watched the original without the remake being made will just watch the remake and call it good. So yeah, it's an "everyone wins" scenario. Keep em coming!

The trailers for the American version clearly show some action with guns that was not in the original. My guess is the final act has been completely redone, and likely much worse. It'd be interesting if the movie more played off what Stellan Skarsgard was getting at in 'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.' Paraphrased as, "People are more scared of being impolite than being hurt." If it struck that chord in people who've had to muscle their way through an uncomfortable situation because they couldn't find an out, this movie wouldn't been super effective. Hearing that the characters in this don't get out not due to this sort of thing, but due to bad writing, is really disappointing.

Watch the Danish version. It's literally a year old and 80% English. Go in blind and you'll most likely have a better time. Also (mild spoilers), the reason the Danish version works better is because the family does pick up on the other families' bizarre behaviour but their Danish social sensibilities let them give the other family more chances. That's part of the suspense of the situation and that's lost when you don't have that as a major crux.

The Danish version definitely plays more like a fable or realistic grim fairytale warning of the dangers of avoiding confrontation for the sake of politeness and really solidifies it with its super bleak ending that I doubt the remake had the balls to pull off. That tale of caution feel to it does help cushion the blow for some of the decisions characters make, but it’s definitely the way the movie is portrayed in the Danish film that lets it earn the ability to get away with that.

In the original, the family actually does catch on quickly but they decide not to act so as to not make assumptions. The original movie is 100% about criticizing Northern European politeness at its core, being a lot more blatant about it to the point where the protagonists are not meant to be liked. They're meant to be SO spinelessly accommodating that they outright let the villain do whatever he wants to them despite them being aware that he's evil and wants to kill them. The problem with this version, however, is that this subtext isn't there so the entire premise of the story falls apart instantly. Rather than making the family overly too polite for their own good, they're instead just made into idiots.

@@travistotleI totally agree and haven’t seen the new film but I assumed from the trailers that this version doesn’t help much to get that point across earlier in the film. What I remember of the original version is that it made sense that they were cowardice in certain situations out of being overly polite and this version doesn’t hold the same sensibilities that the original did as far as making it frustrating but understandable

He missed the WHOLE point of the movie. Character decisions, it's literally a premise between the couple that the husband is literally infatuated with the masculinity of the big bad guy, he can't see no wrong being done. And he had problem with people laughing when the director and actors have been clearly saying that they've kept it intentionally uncomfortable yet funny. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LAUGH WHERE THEY WANT YOU TO.

The movie does in fact state that they don't have phone service out there. When driving into the estate they get lost and Ben says can't we just call them, Louise explains they have no signal... as for Ben himself, his redemption arc was supposed to the moment he broke down and apologised to Louise and says he should have listened to her. Then later he chooses to jump off the roof to get the ladder so the she and the kids can get down safely, then he takes the shotgun when they think Paddy is coming around the corner and he tells her to go and he'll hold Paddy off and catch up. It wasn't well executed, but the film did indeed give Ben moments when he was to be redeemed and shown to care about his family, not to mention he jumped out of the car to save Ant in the lake and told Louise to take the wheel and go. It wasn't perfect and I was underwhelmed, but not for these reasons

Saw the original, when I saw the trailer for this one I was dissapointed that all the mystery is destroyed in the trailer, the original film is an example of the dangers of being too naive and having no malice, the couple was just to forgiving and could not put limits when they had too, both of them weak in their own way, the lesson and the kind of naturalistic aproach to human nature as to why we think we are so civilised when we are in reality animals and how those instincts are of value to us when we need them.

Yeah…from what I’m hearing from this review, this movie probably shouldn’t have been remade. From my understanding, the original Danish movie was a satire/critique on Danish culture/social norms of being overly nice and accommodating to strangers, with the protagonist family getting into an increasingly worse predicament because they don’t want to be rude by saying no. Us Americans though don’t really have that issue (at least not to that degree), with us more willing to put our foot down once certain lines have been crossed. So when it’s a pure remake without any narrative changes the protagonist family comes off as being dumb or otherwise unrealistic in how they’re reacting to us. But then of course had they taken more liberties with the plot then that would have its own criticisms, so honestly it probably shouldn’t have been done in the first place.

They think they will sell more tickets with these long ass trailers giving away everything? I don't get it. I would prefer a short 30 sec trailers just giving a hint of what it's about. Feels like I said the same 10 years ago.... Stupid af. The original is supposed to be a satire and social commentary so the ending is the way it is because of that. But even with that I found it ridiculous because okay there are people who feel pressure to stay polite and not make a fuss but when your family is in danger, I'm sorry but you absolutely would do SOMETHING. Being polite and bound by society's pressure doesn't make you a bloody coward. I don't like conflict of any kind but my God if anyone even attempted to hurt my kids I would absolutely square up to them and get my kids the hell out of there. Probably not gonna watch the remake even with McAvoy. I just can't stand stupid characters in any movie.
