In real life a man was pulled over and had his money taken by the police. He was retired military and didn't trust banks so he kept money on him. They asked him if he had any weapons or large sums of cash on him. He had no weapons but asked them what they consider a large sum of money and they said anything over 1,000, he said yes and told them how much he had. It was over 10 grand I think he had. He was just visiting family but they pulled him over because he was from out of state. He was honest and they took his money he had receipts and everything to prove the money was legal and legitimate. He eventually got the money back a year later due to various groups. Civil asset forfeiture is more common than people think. Footage of the encounter is on youtube. When I watched the movie I immediately remembered that event, I don't know if it inspired the movie or something. Stay safe out there people.

I've always hated the concept of taking from someone and being protected because the amount they'd pay in court defeats the purpose. I know so many situations are different but I feel like once someone proves themself the victim, they shouldn't have to shoulder all their court fees. If you take someone's money and say they can't have it when they need it, you've forced them to pay for a lawyer. Any way rant aside this guy really is one of my favorite directors. Funny, this review came out a few minutes after I finished the film. I must say, I immediately thought of First Blood, but it's just the premise. I was surprised how good this movie was. The thing I liked the most was the dialog. There were no cliché phrases, no filler dialog, on the contrary, it felt like each word was heavily weighted before it was put in the script, very (military) effective dialog. No unnecessary exposition, didn't take the audience by the hand, or insult our intelligence. It felt like every scene was there for a reason. I saw that John Boyega was supposed to play the main character, but after seeing Aaron Pierre, I think it was the better choice. I don't see how John Boyega would have pull it off.

I watched 30 seconds of the trailer on Netflix, the automatic one, before I stopped it and was like "well, this is what I'm watching tonight." Definitely a Reacher-esque film, and I am here for it. It plays with the trope that you see in some Reacher stories too where the MC doesn't want to willy-nilly kill people, AND the badguys seem to be the same where they tend to be assholes and will harm but aren't out there killing everyone they see as a threat. And I really enjoy that aspect, where you're not sure how far the story will go or not.

Loved it. Felt like a Tyler Sheridan flick. Vibe of "First Blood" (Rambo 1) with "Wind River". Aaron Pierre is someone to take notice of. Looking forward to more roles. Not a pure action movie. More of a calmer version of Jack Reacher. It looked like a Batman movie. Batman doesnt kill. More on the detective side. Solving a mystery. I liked the surprise plot twist in the end.
