How to Fix / Repair Singer Sewing Machine Hook Timing

In this video i'm going to show you how to time your Singer Sewing machine with a horizontal Bobbin. Timing usually goes out in your sewing machine after the Needle and thread gets jammed. You can tell you sewing machine is out of time when you can no longer sew as the hook timing is out and the bobbin thread isn't getting picked up. Or when your sewing stitch is starting to look horrible.
On this model of Singer Sewing machine you need to remove the bottom cover plate that is after the power is turned off. Once the cover is remove you'll see the bar and the 2 set screws that you will need to loosen. when you set the timing the Needle needs to be in the upward motion and the top of the thread hole needs to be touching the bottom of the hook like shown in the video. You may get luck and get this in one shot or you may have to spend some time to get it perfect.

I have watched at least 20 videos on timing. This, by far, was EXCELLENT. The photo of the needle and timing relationship has not been shown on any other video I watched. I also like that you told me to rethread my machine. Thank you. My kenmore 100 stitch is over 30 years old and this is the only repair we have ever needed to attempt.

My friend's Singer was skipping stitches & bobbin thread was loose between each stitch. Many thanks for this helpful video on fixing the timing & now, all stitches are there. Regarding the bobbin thread being too loose goes, the solution was to adjust a tiny screw located on the bobbin with a single clockwise turn to tighten its tension. Cheers!

This was very helpful. The first time I watched the video I didn't think this was the issue because everything looked aligned but still no zigzag. So I kept researching and landed on a video by citysewing. He suggested that you do the alignment with the needle in the left position. But the machine he was repairing had a different layout. So I returned to this video, and keeping my needle left aligned followed your guidelines. Not only does my machine have a great looking zigzag but all the decorative stitches worked, as well. That was very well done - most of us don't know what the trouble can be when things aren't working as they should. Not only did you show how to troubleshoot but a nicely detailed presentation on how to fix it. I have an older Singer (38 years old) electronic that has begun skipping the occasional stitch. Was worried it might be the electronics (which I would never mess with) but now it may be more of a small timing issue. You have given me some tools to do my own trouble shooting which may or may not mean a trip for some service. : )

Thank you very much for this video. I just got a new machine, was thrilled in that it is a heavy duty Singer. I was using heavy thread on top and for the bobbin. VBefore I switched to the heavy thread in the bobbin, I had a jam. Once cleared the machine was fine for a while then it stopped working. I called the help line and they told me I would have to return it because the timing was off. I have a client waiting for me to finish a jean jacket I am making. Returning the machine seemed extreme and highly undesirable. I did a search and found your video and VOILA!!! All is well and I will make my deadline!! Thank you so much.

I have a machine out now that I timed using the gears. yea PIA but the set screws on mine are a 5 sided bolt head that sits in a well. yep need to get a Penta thin walled socket. if I get up the courage I will use an EZ out and replace with a socket head. just saying use an EZ out gives me the willies. thanks again.

OMG. This video was an absolute help. I have a singer stylist, the digital one that refused to pick up the bobbin thread, after paying an exorbitant to fix this and other issues u was left unsatisfied and unwilling to return it to the repair lady. I almost NEVER comment on videos but I felt I had to this time! My 1970's Singer that was given to me for free has been out of commision for about 8 months now. I was able to go in and find out that the gear dogs were ground down but I couldn't find a video to help me with that. Boyfriend to the rescue! He fixed that. Awesome help!!! Sewing machine newbie I am, but consider myself mechanically adept. I found the cogged belt that times all top moving parts to all bottom moving parts had skipped 1 cog due to a loosely adjusted belt tensioner. All is well in paradise, forget buying flowers and candy, if you can fix the sewing machine you’re golden. Key is hook should be passing the needle just as needle about to raise from its lowest point. 😎

Singer 6510 Scholastic - Thank you so much! Though my machine looked different, I was able to make it work. FYI for others with the 6510 ..has the adjustments for the shaft directly under the timing carriage (not the back end of the machine) and has three screws you have to loosen.
