That hinge is amazing for sure! I mean, Samsung made 3 and got it close (they'll probably nail it on the 4th one). Oppo looked at it, said they're making one, and then tossed it on the table for people to play with it. So far, every tech tuber that got this device is amazed at how smoothly this phone opens and closes. The breakdown you did shows they did some gear physics and material stress test to put out the best folding/hinged device. Heck if it wasn't for the OS and how small it was, I'd be looking into getting one. But yeah, the engineering of this phone is jaw dropping!

It would be nice to see you test the hardness of the flexible glass layer in future teardowns, so we could see what it can sustain compared to both gorilla glass and the plastic layers, putting durability-related marketing to the test

@DorCoMaNdO

@pc That's still a form of durability testing, seeing how brittle it might be and if that's the reason it's still covered by plastic
@waltundres9630
@waltundres9630 2 жыл бұрын
As the glass layer is not exposed to the outside, the hardness is pretty irrelevant (at least in my opinion). It looks like the plastic layers get damaged first by sharp objects so it doesn't matter if the glass layer itself is stronger or weaker. And it would be pretty hard to test. He'd have to remove every layer on top of the glass without damaging the layers beneath it to be able to do his scratch hardness test, which sounds impossible to me. But if he could get his hands on the glass layer only, a durability test on that could be interesting.
@DorCoMaNdO
@DorCoMaNdO 2 жыл бұрын
@@waltundres9630 I personally find foldable phones to be too fragile as they are now, with practically anything leaving a mark on the folding screen, durability tests on the glass would keep track of improvements until we potentially see folding glass as the top layer, but that still assumes it has any relevance right now, hence asking for it to be tested.

Not that I’m against 3rd party repairs but if you’re going to pay $1000+ why wouldn’t you get it fixed properly by professionals that guarantee it will be fixed? I’d definitely understand if it was second hand or if it was given to you by someone else but still

One thing they could to is make as many things accessible from the back, replace the glass with some form of plastic to reduce the chance of cracking (or don't) and there you go. If they make the ports/speakers/batteries/other stuff that usually breaks easy to reach, that wouldn't be so bad. I don't think many repair shops would even attempt a folding screen replacement

that's one of the worst statements i've read on YT. When all the screws work in unison to keep the hinge together, you can't count them as "failure points" since they're packed nicely together and keep the hinge together simultaneously rather than having to work independently so it's virtually impossible to have a loose screw or broken since the hinge opens and closes equally on all sides on an ultra small tolerance level.
