Jersey Joe Walcott vs Rocky Marciano I
-
Jersey Joe Walcott defends the heavyweight championship of the world against 'The Brockton Blockbuster', Rocky Marciano. This was Walcott's second defense of the title. Because of his advanced age he was the underdog, but was still far ahead before the KO. There would therefore be a rematch the following year.
-
Their records at the time
Rocky Marciano: 42-0-0
Jersey Joe Walcott: 51-16-2

These fellows are 15 round fighters.. Walcott had great co-ordination and balance. He fought long enough to Ko Harold Johnson Sr. and Jr.The son being an exceptional Lt. Heavyweight champion. He was outpointing Rocky in this fight, and gave him a pasting in the 12th round. Rocky was so tough, fit and competitive,he could still summon that power at the finish. Two great warriors!.

Marciano was a warrior, relentless always moving forward seeking out an opportunity to drop his opponent. If you watch closely, you'll see it's not a random punch that knocks out Walcott. He's learned the timing of his opponent to know that exact moment he is open and connects on the chin, driving it left as Walcott's moving his head right.

Yes, those who call Marciano clumsy and amateurish miss this entirely. It takes awesome athleticism to generate this kind of power, like hitting a baseball 500 feet; the whole body has to be in sync. And, as just seen, his power did not diminish even in the 13th round.

Marciano had a great trainer in Charley Goldman. He was lucky to have him and the others in his camp to help. They worked on his balance by tying a string around his ankles while he worked on the heavy bag. Goldman taught Rocky how to get the leverage for every punch he threw. Marciano would train relentlessly and Goldman had to tell him to stop. He was always in tip top shape, ready to go 15 rounds without punching himself out or tiring. He worked out on a 300 lb bag when most bags of the day were 75-100 lbs.He was a GREAT champion!

Body Punching is such a great weapon in boxing. It weakens opponent throwing punches downstairs over and over and over. It is also way harder to not land a body shot compared to a blow to opponent's head. Even if you hit arms into body the wearing down effect over and over pays a toll and weakens, tires out, and hurts your opponent. Too many boxers neglect far too often to use body punching in their attack on opponent in the ring. Yeah, Marciano was a master at the art of body punching.

Watching clips of Marciano lately has given me a new appreciation for him. For a number of reasons I won't go into he doesn't get quite the appreciation I think he deserves. His conditioning was super human, he beat people with pace and power, and his defense was solid. He was very skilled he just had a style that looked different because it was designed for him. This man should be in every discussion over who's the GOAT. Even Ali admitted Rocky would given him a hard time and could've beaten him. He said he thought he was better than Frazier and Frazier gave him all sorts of problems.

As a kid growing up in Brockton he was our hero. I met him one time at a thing at the YMCA for local kids. Nice guy. Humble. Quiet. He told us when he trained for a fight, one of the routines he used was the pool at the Y. He’d go in with ping pong paddles and hold in each hand, then throw 1000 uppercuts in each arm. He was a tank. Never gave up. And at 49 and 0 the greatest who ever was in my opinion. When we heard he died we were stunned. I can still remember kids yelling Rock died! We couldn’t believe it. @ericday4505
@ericday4505 4 жыл бұрын
@studentofsweetscience I agree , when evaluating fighters to try and leave my personal biases out of the equation. It is difficult however, one likes what he likes. I always like a guy who is good, but doesn't have to show up an apponent. Class guys, or what I perceive as class, Ray Leonard was the classic opportunist, he played Marvin and his camp and stole that fight. Watching some of those middleweight wars at that time, then watching Ray run around for 12 rounds in that massive ring was pitiful. I know guys who knew him personally from DC, and from what I hear the guy was big time cheap. Whatever, that debacle with Marvin not only turned me away from that division it turned me away from that sport. Ray Leonard, stole the second fight from Tommy as well. Then he speaks like he has this profound knowledge of the sport. What the hell was the second Duran fight? The guy had skill but lacked real toughness.I never cared for him, was on the fence sort a. But later he just seemed gutless.

He had great jab, the ability to slip and fade from power punches, a deadly body attack, great head and body movement, great balance, and a complex repertoire of punches. Yes he got hit maybe too much but that was because he was always moving forward no matter what the opponent was doing. Far more skillful than the "news media" ever realized.

He was good in his day but he honestly didn't face the competition that some of the other Heavyweight Champions faced. If you dont believe me look up the names of several of his first 35 fights. A lot of these fighters had losing records and some theres no information on. I am not saying he wasn't good he was the best in his day but this fight here is against a 38 year old Jersey Joe Walcott who had previously won the title by upsetting Ezzard Charles in his I think 5th attempt to win the title. Rocky's biggest two wins were over Walcott and Chsrles, LaStarza and a 40 year old Joe Louis. He didn't fight the competition that Ali fought, or Holmes or Louis abd Foreman, Holifield, Tyson. He just didn't I am sorry. Rocky scores a dramatic KO in this fight but it was a hard fight and he is cut and is struggling with a 38 year old Walcott. I cant see him at 185, 190 pounds being able to handle a 28 to 33 year old Ali. Ali stayed in with Frazier who applied incredible pressure and was 205 and could punch. Again no disrespect to Rocky but when you say greatest of all time you got to be able to support the argument.

See some folks here are knocking Rocky. You gotta really know what you're looking at to appreciate just how great Rocky was. Yeah, he was not the prototypical boxer many associate with greatness. But he possessed a combination of traits rarely seen in boxing. He may have been the best conditioned athlete in the history of combat sports. He had a chin that was second to none...Jake Lamotta excluded. His punching power was devastating. It's no wonder that he went undefeated. How do you beat a guy that doesn't tire, doesn't get hurt, and can wear you down with unrelenting pressure or put you to sleep with a single punch? And don't discount Rocky's skill level. He used his size disadvantage to his advantage. He knew how to get underneath bigger guys, roll with their punches, and counter with devastating power. And while he was not a guy who would dazzle you with combinations, he put together power shots in in unique sequences and at unconventional angles. That hook/uppercut he fired while at a distance hurts just to look at. The floor to fist power chain was devastating. But as I said, you need an educated eye to see all of that. And let's not forget that the man was 5'10 and just above 180 pounds with a meager 68 inch reach. Oh, and BTW...he had no amateur career to speak of and didn't turn pro until he was 25. The man was great. The are no "buts" to speak of.

Rocky was indeed a great fighter. His style is very intriguing to me. I will describe it in the following words: unrelenting, menacing, bobbing up and down (somewhat like a float when a bluegill takes the bait on a hook), a bone crushing left and right hook, and there is almost an innocence in his posture that seems to say, "Hey, come here so we can end this rather quickly and spare yourself the torture that will follow." I would have loved to see him fight Mike Tyson as an exhibition of the raw punching power of both men. And I would have loved to see him fight Muhammad Ali as an exhibition of what happens when raw power meets lightning speed. There is a computer generated fight between Ali and Marciano on KZbin.

I think the Marciano era was much better than some Marciano detractors are willing to admit. Marciano faced some very good contenders on the way up that were both in their prime and with excellent records when they met Marciano. Carmine Vingo, Rex Layne, Roland La Starza are prime examples. As for blown up heavyweight well what is that? Charles was 33 to Rocky's 30 when they fought. Charles was taller, heavier and more experienced. Walcott was an older fighter who was reigning champ whowas a far better fightr in his late 30's than he ever was in his 20's.
