Re: The Metal Gear video - I'm one of those people who watched the whole thing, but also knows roughly zero about the franchise at all. I was nearly in the 98% who DIDN'T click on the video, but I was in a mood to say "Heck, I don't know much about this but I DO like Jesse so sure." I can't speak for everyone, but for me it felt kinda like "if I'm going to watch this video, I should know something about Metal Gear and/or have some interest in it." I might have been more likely to watch it (without vibing on your style personally) if it was pitched as "Metal Gear Lore for Noobs" or "Metal Gear Lore is CRAZY - Let's Dive In" ... something that said much more "This is a cool entry point into lore for a game you might never play." I'm not sure if I'm typical for your audience or not - I watch you mostly because of your FFXIV content (and then later also because of your frequent collaboration with the Grinding Gear boys), and think that your variety gaming approach is interesting (which is why I started watching Geekenders). I do overall enjoy having you as a hype man for games I should check out (e.g. your love of Astrobot is nearly enough to get me to buy a PS5). The lore deep dive on a franchise I don't know at all made me feel like "Oh, I don't know, maybe this long video is NOT for me." That all said, I'm really happy I DID watch the Metal Gear video because it was cool as heck and very accessible for a complete outside like me, and now I'm more likely to check out your other random lore deep dives in the future.

When I went down the rabbit hole that is Neil’s work history I was taken aback at just how much he’s contributed to games in general. From mocap, voice work, directing, etc. I mean dozens upon dozens of titles. Really happy to see it all come to the forefront / general knowledge after his work with Astarion. He’s also really sweet with everyone he meets, had the grand pleasure this past summer and he was so tired but putting his best foot forward for every single person that came up to him.

I remember that as a kid I was definitely the type to ask my parents why things were the way they were. I still have a memory of being like 7 or 8 and being in the car at a red light and noticed that the car shifted every time a car passed going in the opposite direction. When I hit my dad with that he was like alright then and began to explain air pressure and the displacement of air to me.

28:43 I feel this one. As a kid I liked to ask a lot of those “why” questions. I specifically remember one time (I was actually around 6 or 7) that I asked my mom how long people live. She gave me a very generous answer and said some live to be a hundred. Now, I knew enough to know that my ten years old was basically just around the corner. I also knew how to count by my 5s and 10s by that age. So I’m thinking “so at best, I get to live as long as I have already for only ten more times?” I then told my mom “Well, that’s not very long!” She solemnly said “No, no it isn’t.

My mom gave me terribly blunt facts as answers due to being a well versed in many subjects teacher. I remember asking where do babies come from, thinking she would dodge the question like how Timmy Turner's parents do on Fairly Oddparents. Nope, I got a full biology lesson at age five.

Dancing around it won’t help the children (might make them even more confused, in fact) and simply explaining it to them matter of factly would just give them the info and leave it at that. Sure they might be weirded out for a bit, but we ALL gotta learn it haha

Neil Newbon also plays Heisenberg in re 8. Another example of a actor with great range is Nolan North. He has done a ton of stuff were his voice is unrecognisable, however he often gets asked to do his Nathan Drake voice which is essentially just his own voice xD. One of my favourite RDJ movies is Chaplin from the early 90s. If you haven't seen it give it look it's great.

For the Butt Knight shenanigans, not 100% sure but someone in another video had said it was because Dodger had recommended a game that had Knight in the title, because it had butt sliders, so Jesse with his monke brain, like we all do, put both together and remembered Butt Knight.

5:40 As a Game Cube kid who was home schooled and loved Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, watching Sonic 3 was absolutely the experience Jesse described. And as someone whose first Sonic experience was Sonic CD, the mid credits scene had me fired up.

My thing about Silksong has always been that I just wish they never talked about it. Like that game was announced before the pandemic. it will have been 6 years since the announcement. Like the first game took 4 years from Kickstarter to release. Silksong was supposed to be DLC but it became much bigger. Which is fine but I worry that either that game is way bigger than it needs to be or something is going seriously wrong and the project is dead. Because its been years since we heard anything from them. I want nothing else than for that game to come out and it just be every bit as good if not better than HK. But the longer a game takes from first gameplay to release the more i worry about it.

Man, I remember really being into Dungeon Fighter Online, then their Steam integration broke. I gave up after 2 months of radio silence, and I am unsure if they ever fixed it. So it's weird seeing them still doing stuff, but I gotta say that my experience with both the game itself and the company *really* don't do a lot to get me interested in The First Berserker. But a lot of the other stuff coming out early next year seems cool, and I'm with Dodger. Tales of the Shire sounds great!

Haha, so true. I always hear Jaina Proudmore every time i hear her voice too. They never want her to do another kind of voice in games. Same for the Wolverine guy and many others. Nolan North seem to be really good at changing voices and stuff too, so it ain't only Troy Baker. P.s. Illian Stormrage guy? Hes literally having that same voice every single time. I love finding his voice in random games and movies. He was in Alone in the dark recently, just reading a book LOL.

Related to PS1/PS2 voice acting, Check out the Legacy of Kain series, specifically the two Soul Reaver titles. They both got remastered recently and are examples of top VA from both PS1 and PS2.

I refuse to preorder games and prefer to be a patient gamer and wait to see if it sticks and if it gets a sale, and this works for me since I have family so I will likely not have to play at release anyways. But every now and then I have to remind myself about just how good life is as a patient gamer, so I preorder a game and get to feel the regret. Last time was planet coaster 2 and by God it was not worth the preorder, buggy and not enough changes from the first one (with that said their additions of additional park maintenance stuff is great, will see when I have the time to play it again, hopefully the bugs will be fixed by then )

Fyrakk has gotta be one of my favorite voices in WoW, Matt Mercer really made him such a fun villain. Mercer also voices a number of characters in WoW of varying importance, the perhaps most notable one is Rexxar, who he's voiced from - I think - WoD onwards. Troy Baker was also mentioned in the podcast, I really enjoyed him as Gul'dan in WoD and Legion!
