I learned a running/breathing cadence of 1 in and 3 out, 2 in and 6 out, etc from my shihan 20 years ago. I used this pattern when I was in the Army, and enjoyed much success as a runner.
@KARATEbyJesse5 жыл бұрын
Fantastic! It can easily take you into a flow state. Kind of like holotropic breathing.

Jesse Enkamp I’ve never heard of holotropic breathing. I’ll research it. Thanks!

Doesn't it mean that you breathe in less air than you breathe breathe out? I actually heard it should be the other way around - like breathe three in and two out in order to boost stamina and as I tried it two days ago while running it actually helped. Do you mind explaining your version to me again?

No matter what the martial arts, be it, boxing, karate, kung-fu, judo, it seems that the very first thing a good master teaches their students is breathing and how to master it. That says alot in how important it really is.

Brilliant. Another useful tool. I'm going to try the relaxing part before bed and the intensity part when I get up. By the way, chanting mantras is also relaxing. I chant Nam-u-Ka-ra-te -do at my karate altar (but I also pray to a higher power).

Some interesting side notes- There's a machine that guides through a breathing pattern for people with high blood pressure to follow. The pattern is the same as advanced Sanchin breathing (3 sec in, pause, 6 sec out, pause, repeat). It tells people to use abdominal breathing. It's approved by the FDA in the US and drops the blood pressure more than medication. Also, a student of mine was having neck surgery where he had to be awake. He started getting really nervous and his pulse and BP started to skyrocket. He said the doctors started looking worried, but he didn't know why. So he started doing the abdominal sanchin breathing pattern to calm down and his pulse and BP dropped to normal. In recovery the doctors asked him what he did and he told him. That was when the doctor told him his pulse and BP had spiked so high they were afraid he was going to have a heart attack on the table until he started the breathing Breathing matters in everything. BTW, watch an infant, they don't chest breathe, they do abdominal breathing. Most people actually "unlearn" the natural way to breathe as we grow up and have to be taught how to breathe again. [ myself included ;) ]

Mister Enkamp, thank you kindly for this video focused on basics that all the martial artists need to progress. But I've seen you had a small conversation with somebody in a comment below and you said that sidesplits are not needed for high kicks, so can you recommended us, Karate Nerds, some tips on how to kick high/higher. I saw your tutorials on Yoko-geri/ Mawashi-geri plus your #1 kicking exercise, but I feel like those are more for leg muscles training ( sorry if this oppinion disturbed you) and kick correctitude. If you could kindly share those tips it would be marvelous, but if you'd do a video on those, it would certainly be a gift from the heavens. Thank you!

Jesse I have a question or two if you see this please :) When you're doing a combination of moves (kata or kumite), how do you utilize your breathing so it's effective for all of the moves at once? Because in tense situation I won't have time to "think" on when should I breathe and at what point, how many times, etc. And how would I combine it to tense my muscle just at the point so I won't choke like when I get punched in the stomach? If you could please reply (or do a video about it) would appreciate :) Thank you ahead, train hard, stay safe, and have fun OSS! :)
