Lots of excellent training techniques Sensei Jesse! In our classes we liked doing front kicks over the back of a chair to keep the knee up. At home I would stand at the bottom of the stairs to get the up out back and down motion right without slamming my toes into the risers. Then of course there was the Sensei who used to train roundhouse kick by sticking his big toe in your ear and wiggling it while explaining the importance of throwing the hip.

Higher the knee, higher the kick. The partner drills are so important, because it allows 2 people to train at the same time. In southern kung-fu there are drills where you and your partner stand on one leg, the other leg is touching, kinda like a leg chi sao. To keep balance you can hold arms. 😊. Then the fun (pain) begins as you practise sticky leg. Your movements are smooth. Ever watched The Art of High Impact Kicking? That Silver Fox geezer.

I like your videos, I'm actually a tkd student but they're very applicable to me. Any advice on getting a high knee/kick in side kick position? When I try to extend my knee always pulls down towards floor so I can't keep a high knee.. I turn my back foot to "open the hip" but this just seems to pull my kicking leg with it.
@Aioli984 жыл бұрын
In my TKD class we do the first drill after sparring but instead of mae geri we do it in Yoko geri. We try and push each other out or headshots since we do it in full gear. Its both fun and killer especially since we usually use our less dominant leg first

Omg!! This is brilliant ! I’m saving this video too... can you tell me how many times we should repeat each of the six exercises for each leg .. like 5 reps for beginners, 8 for intermediates and 10-12 for advanced .... would that work .... I’m def a beginner ... thank you again!!
@jameslangridge16743 жыл бұрын
Omar Haq I know this is a late response to your question, but nobody seemed to answer. He says it in the video and in other responses. Do as many as you can until you lose good form and posture. Then take a break and change legs. If you cannot kick high, do it lower and try a few kicks higher, but not every single one. Keep trying to keep your posture and form good for each kick, every time. If you train 3-4 times a week, make sure you rest the legs too and set aside about 21-30 days before noticing good improvements. That's what I used to do when training for competitions and gradings, etc. Hope that helps. I broke my back, so now I rarely kick higher than solar plexus. No real need to kick higher, but it sure feels fun getting in a clean, head-height mawashi geri on an opponent when they do not expect it.
