Personally I Iike both sides. I like the business side and the craftsman side. That's why I think I'm willing to take that loss in growth in exchange for the satisfaction of creating things with my hands. I know im spreading myself thinner than what I probably should be, but the draw of the tools and the physical work is just too much. Great video btw. Maybe in the future when I'm tired of swinging a hammer everyday I'll transition to the business side and work on growing my business from an entrepreneur's perspective. Thanks for the great content.

I remember listening to an Amish guy online say, "we don't break the horse, we establish the horse", embracing a role doesn't have to be painful, I'm probably speaking for myself.

I resemble your remarks. Process of reinvention has taken me from technician to manager and hopefully next to entrepreneur. Funny thing is I always thought of myself as an entrepreneur but somehow sabotaged myself along the way trying to be technician and manager. I know, makes no sense. At 60, my back forbids the tools and my mind forbids all the details so my goal is to transition to inspire clients, employees and trades alike while at the same time finally realizing my true potential as an entrepreneur

Hey bro loving your videos, they're definitely hitting home. I'm in a huge transition of delegating, I'm challenged in releasing my guys to run the show. How do you push your guys?

The main thing isnt wether he does, or no longer does, but wether he can. It does make a difference at least to other workers to know that the contractor has the ability to do their job if it came down to it. The big thing however is to realize is when its time to replace you, so you can then move on to more important things. But nothing ever stays the same, so its nice knowing you have options if and when things change.

CGC in Florida and I avoid going hands on unless absolute emergency. I lose money when I put on tool belt. Running a business is about delegating tasks so that the owner can focus on sales so that business grows. Great video

yo Jesse. on the topic of sales, can you make a video going over a typical sales process (residential, if possible)? i feel like i struggle with that the most. i seem to find myself struggling to answer tough questions from potential clients when they have deep trade-specific questions or questions that should be directed to architects and engineers regarding if certain floor plans are possible. i think it hurts the sales process when i don’t have the answer immediately.

However, when I hire GC for a job, I’m paying for his experience and not a bunch of laborers who speak zero English while the GC is busy running other jobs. A complete disconnect from a field can hurt your reputation as well imo

What do you or your customers expect as far a number of times or frequency of you actually being on the job while quoting, during construction, after each sub contractor, and at the end? Or maybe now that I know you have a supervisor, what do you expect of him in relation to what you would do or did before you had that help?

Jesse, this is great advice. However, toward the end you say that rather than swing the hammer myself, I can teach others "how to swing a hammer because I've swung a hammer since I was a teenager and I understand what needs to be done..." I'm an entrepreneur and I've always worked in an office, and I'm interested into getting into home building. I know how to do basic things, and I can figure most things out, but I certainly can't really teach people the right way to install siding, for example. Do I need to spend some time as a tradesman first so I can learn the right way to do things? I'm 45 years old and I don't really want to do that if it isn't absolutely necessary. Thanks in advance, and thanks for the great content.

@@Jesse_Lane Thanks! That'll be tough but it'll be worth it in the end. I'm a professional civil engineer and I was a property manager of single family houses for a decade and I did a lot of maintenance & upgrades to homes, so I understand fairly well how things are put together. I feel like I should be able to fill my knowledge gaps relatively quickly. Thanks again for your response and for all the cool content.

Perhaps you took the hit for another man, silver lining of hope. I know, easy for me to say, nevertheless be strong and don't let it get you down, I look at the governor of Texas and I admire him, or Joni from Joni and Friends. No matter what, there's always much to do; may the Lord Jesus bless you!

Florida Boy If you watch my other videos (including my most recent one) I express that I feel I am below everyone supporting them in their work. Making them look good. This video is for the person who wants to be the entrepreneur and scale their business, this video isn’t aimed towards a lifelong craftsman.

Understand to Florida Boy. That as a business owner I was lucky to make $100 after paying the people that I hired I had no line of credit no loan nothing I saved every dime in order to pay the people working for me and I managed them to up their skills. You can never grow a business or make it a company if you are on your tools. Your job as an owner is to build relationships and continue to find more work. Anyone can work an 8 hour day and call it. But when you have the responsibility to cover payroll and make sure their is another job lined up your employees don't have to worry about that. Thats the position of the owner we risk it all and actually work 24/7 to take care of those who help build our companies.

I have to disagree with you on this...when business is booming y you can afford to simply do project management. ..but when things slow down due a economic downturn...that's when you have to put on your toolbelt on ,downsize , and get to work...I saw tons of established construction companies Close back in 2008 because of their mentality..BTW..I'm from San Antonio which is a pretty large metropolitan area..

I respectfully disagree. Both personal and informative/educational content is what makes for a good channel. I believe what you are looking for Max is more of a “how to course” style platform which in many cases is on membership or fee based private site. IMO thanks for the content J. Lane
