These blogs did the same thing with Fallout 4, a series that offered the ability to play a mentally-challenged bisexual black woman for decades. Hijacking long-running progressive franchises and touting them as a victory as a result of something the bloggers did is their modus operandi.

+Drake Sigar It is also laughable that Fallout 4 took options out and restricted your character to good guy/gal concerned parent (of the patriarchy by their definition). Then froth in the mouth over mean words being said to the female character because raiders are in fact not very nice people.
@Bizarrejoe

+Twilight Sparkle On the contrary, you can if you want to. But on the great scheme of things, thats the only thing you can do in this one. Unless this is part of a bigger plan and they are actually trying to make 4 a good fallout game when the DLC comes out. In every single other Fallout before this one ('cept that one we dont talk about), you coul be anything you wanted, you could be a raider, a slaver, a superhero, whatever YOU wanted. This is not a fallout game, this a Mass Effect 3, paintjob with an added open world. At least for now.

I think it's just funny how if people like something it is because somehow it upheld your core values, and that's what made it great, praise be!.. But if you don't like it people always find a way to make it about how it represents a prime example of whatever you happened to hate at the moment. Where's the actual objectivity?

I'm actually glad that they gender-swapped Hogarth, if she remained male they would've basically made the most dysfunctional characters male, and it kind of shows how both males and females can have the same flaws, and also it shows that gender is mostly irrelevant, kind of the opposite of what Social Justice Weasels keep telling us.

My biggest problem with the show is that, frankly, it shot its wad WAY too early. The 'Kilgrave' arc should have been saved for season 2 at the earliest. Now, because they can't adapt any of the other interesting storylines from "Alias" due to Sony still having the rights to the Spider-Man characters Jessica Drew and Maddie Franklin and Fox having X-Men so they can't even use the word "mutant," Jessica's character has been taken as far as it can be without making her Luke Cage's baby mama (aka the sum total of her characterization in "The Pulse").
@Butterworthy
@Butterworthy 9 жыл бұрын
I don't even think it's Kilgrave raping Jessica that really motivates her, but that Kilgrave MADE her kill someone, which was completely against everything she stood for her entire life. That was the pivotal moment in her life, that's what made her so paranoid, and that's what set her on this quest to take him down. Everything stems from that murder, not the rape.
@ginge641

I'd like to point out the the fight scenes in Jessica Jones were very disappointing. I'm aware the show is not meant to be Daredevil, but she only does two things with super strenght: grab someone by the neck or throw them to the ground. That is it. The latter she does poorly.
@TheRageaholic
@TheRageaholic 9 жыл бұрын
+Anderson Andrighi - Well, it's not really that kind of comic. Or show. It's more of a mystery procedural with the occasional fight scene.
@LordsSky
@LordsSky 9 жыл бұрын
+Anderson Andrighi Agreed. The only good fight scene in the entire thing was the bar scene with Luke, and that was only because of the use of his unbreakable skin. The actress simply couldn't fight, you can always tell when an actor can't do anything physical because the director has to rely on close ups and cuts. We didn't get that crap in Daredevil because they made sure to hire actors who had the chops for fight scenes.
@BatteryAz1z
@BatteryAz1z 9 жыл бұрын
+LordsSky That's what stopped me from watching about halfway through, the fight scenes were almost college level amateurish. The cuts were just too distracting. Show, don't tell. It felt like they were quite self-aware that since they couldn't manage to _show_ her strength, it had to keep reminding you by letting her break chain locks with one hand and jump on trampolines.

My main issue with Jessica Jones, and the main thing that takes it from the incredible 'best superhero show' level of Daredevil to being just great is the pacing. Jessica Jones' pacing is all over the fucking place, and she has several different run ins with the Purple Man, to the point where it's just frustrating, and they're retreading the same ground by the finale.

I have to admit, Netflix's Marvel stuff has consistently been solid. They should find a way to can that Agents of SHIELD/Agent Carter crap, and funnel extra resources into Netflix. God if Netflix made a Squadron Supreme/Sinister series or... god, dare I even dream, a Superior Foes of Spider-Man series, I would scream my passion to the heavens. As for DC's shows.... yeah honestly, Flash is the only really good one.

crossbones116 I figured. I considered dropping it early on, too. Sticking with it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The show takes a while to build up momentum (two thirds of the first season was building up to SHIELD's collapse, which completely changes the game), but once it does, it doesn't stop. I'd highly recommend giving it a second chance.

Great review. I was underwhelmed by Jessica Jones, but I recognize that has a much to do with me (couldn't stand Krysten Ritter's too-deliberately monotonous delivery) as with the show itself (a 7-episode plot stretched to 13 episodes, with no awesome fights to distract us from the padding). But everything with Kilgrave was solid gold (the wallpaper moment...good heavens, the wallpaper moment), and I'd definitely watch a second season if they delve more into the PI stuff.

+ThePainTrain Yeah, DD Season 2 didn't do anything to soften my opinion of JJ. Because now I want a Punisher show, a third season of DD vaguely based on "Born Again," and maybe even a deliberately campy Heroes For Hire, just for a change of pace. But I definitely don't want any more of the plodding nihilism of Jessica Jones.

I saw this series about 2 weeks ago. While I liked the writing (a lot) less than daredevil's killgrave was an interesting character. I thought in a later episode where (avoiding spoilage) Jessica came home and they had a neighbor over for breakfast was an outstanding scene. The rest of it was kinda schlocky which made it worse than just being full on schlocky. It's very much like what Arrow and Agents of Shield (which btw are much lighter fare than Jessica Jones) are.. Simply unwatchable. Also, this storyline is predated by JoJo's Bizarre Adventure's Dio arc. It seemed like a lot of things were lifted from that, and probably a lot of other things I'm not aware of.

I'd call my congressman, and tell him he'll lose my vote if *he* doesn't get hooked, but I didn't vote for him in the first place. Your terpsichorean linguistic fustigation of games I despise (and some I secretly love), combined with your ability to make heavy metal somehow more awesome when it's in your credits, notwithstanding your love of Daredevil, (which, for me was about twelve too many Old Boy long-take warehouse brawls, and Hannibal-classical-music-master-chef scenes to be particularly memorable) has led me to binge watch most of your history within a laughably brief interval. I hope you never quit, and if I can borrow a quote without getting a DMCA takedown notice for my troubles, God-fucking-speed!

I watched through Dare Devil after your recommendation, while I was not quite my cup of tea I could see where you were coming from. Jessica Jones I made it to the 4th episode and had to stop, it just felt like it was trying too hard and was dull as hell. So little happens each episode and everything is way to drawn out to fill the time slot. The cast is decent and it's well shot. Should I try episode 5 as it suddenly kicks up a gear?

I will give credit that the abortion subplot didn't seem to go anywhere until the absolute end where it was implied that Kilgrave used his aborted child to grow stronger. I was about ready to rage against it, not because of my pro-life stance, but because it initially appeared to be completely pointless to the overarching story.

Loved the show and enjoyed the review. I read the entirety of Alias and it's follow up The Pulse months before the show aired and loved watching Jessica's interactions with the players in her life, from Luke Cage to Ben Urich. It's a shame that Ben Urich and Jessica will never have much of a connection in the MCU, but it is what it is. I'm not sure what you meant when you said that Purple Man forced her to participate in a threesome though. I was under the understanding from her dialogue in Alias that he never actually touched her, simply tormented her by making her watch everything he did with everyone else. He'd basically put her in a position where she desperately wanted him and he would never give her the release she craved. It's in that that I found their connection to be most disturbing. He wasn't interested in breaking her body, just her mind and soul. It's that that I found Kilgrave in the show to be most interesting, kind of lost some of his sadisticness when you find that he actually did rape her.

That's my main issue with the Jessica Jones comic character. After Alias and The Pulse, the character was relegated to being a stay-at-home Mom in the Avengers books. I don't know if it's because no one else wanted to try to top what Bendis did, or if Bendis got greedy or if know else cared and Bendis ran out of ideas but either way it makes me wonder whether or not we will even have a season 2. DD, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist have decades of comic book lore to draw from, JJ has only 1 and a half. Like are they going to have her be like the Arrow show and just take other peoples villains? Deathstroke a Titans villain, Ra's al Ghul a Bamtan villain, and Damien Darhk another Titans villain.

I enjoyed this series, for the most part, having a passing knowledge of the existence of the Alias comics despite never having read them personally. I do loath that they killed off Kilgrave since it robs Jessica Jones of her arch-nemesis, but considering the massive back catalogue of C-list villains Marvel could employ who knows what character might take her place. Now I know they commissioned a second season of Daredevil within days of that series slamming its prehensile dick down on the table for all the other superhero series to see, but Jessica Jones could probably do well to wait until after they finally get around to producing The Defenders. Next year we get Daredevil season 2 and Luke Cage season 1, leaving 2017 for Iron Fist (Lord I am hyped for that series above all others) and The Defenders. 2018 strikes me as a good year to bring out Jessica Jones season 2. As to what stories could be told? Well, she's a Private Investigator, they can start there. Use her as the foil to showcase some Spiderman villains since Sony is now playing nice. No idea why, but Mysterio could do well as an adversary for generic super-strength with a hint of jumping. What say you sir?

I love the character. To me, Jessica Jones is a contemporary Sam Spade as seen by the intensity of her eyes, her intellect, assertiveness, and overall manner. I enjoyed David Tennant's performance, albeit having the feel of a darker and more twisted version of the Doctor. Basically, it's in the vocal rhythms like "weeeeeelll..." or "oh there you are!" I wonder how much of those moments were written. He is excellent, but if you've seen Doctor Who, you'll know what I mean. Like the Tenth Doctor, Killgrave is a tortured man who is alone with nobody to keep him in check which is why he doesn't know any better. Throughly enjoyed the modern noir vibe of the show along with what has to be one of the greatest soundtracks i've heard in a television series in quite a long time. Best of all, the humour works and feels natural to a point that it's just the right amount to separate it from Daredevil. Is it as good as Daredevil? Yes because Jessica Jones is to Daredevil what Deep Space Nine was to The Next Generation: same universe and setting but its own tone and style.

Gonna have to come back to this review :) I'm two episodes right now. I restarted by Netflix subscription in large part due to RF's rec of Daredevil. And I'm watching DD and JJ side by side, one episode at a time. And I will say that I'm impressed. So far I"m seeing good writing and good performances, good mood and great use of color. I will say, so far, everything in JJ has been about sex. Note I say sex, not gender, that hasn't been an issue yet. But every relationship has a sexual tinge to it and people so far seem to be heavily shadowed by what they want, what they need and what they do to get off. Not a complaint, I like sexually charged shows like Casanova over at Amazon, but I'm noticing it.

And it ended comedy. In 2016 I couldn’t have imagined how far things would soon sink. After loving things show Wouldn’t even make it thru season 2 of this or Iron Fist. Or the punisher 2. All were just so woke ... I can ignore it yes, but when woke is the center... they really had little story beyond being woke. I’ll just rewatch these old shows every few years the rest of my days

I thought the highs of Daredevil were better than Jessica Jones, but Jessica Jones overall was more evenly paced.

I personally found this show to be completely and utterly unwatchable. Daredevil had me completely hooked within the first half of episode one, but JarJarsica Jinks turned me completely off within the first half of the first episode.

On an unrelated note, nice to see Gorgoroth on the next Mythos! I know you probably can't say any spoilers, but what's an album you'd recommend to newcomers?

Yep, I fucking loved this show, and I can't believe anyone would even try to claim its "feminist" chops. There's almost literally no identity politics in it. Yeah, there are some small things I'd have wanted to see done differently, but I watched this after not being able to get through any more of the abysmal Arrow series, so compared to that, there's no comparison.

you're very effective here razorfist. I mean at presenting as objective a review as you can. you know, by not filling your reviews with pointless pseudo translations of what the show really means to society at large. just actually telling us why the show is good or bad in a sensible manner.

Well I watched it as requested, as I did Daredevil and I was pleased. It wasn't as good as Daredevil but Killgrave made the show for me. A concern I have for the show now is thus: How are they going to top that villain? Daredevil's got the same issue, they started out so strong with an antagonist that they have to bring their A+++ game for the next season if they wanted to improve. I still like Flash and Arrow but it became a bit hard to watch (esp. Arrow) while I watched Daredevil at the same time because the dialogue, action, and acting were superior.

+David Stubbs They don't necessarily need to top it; they just need to make sure that whatever they do different is just as good. Different != worse.

+The Rageaholic You also kinda, you know, said "there will be ample warning before the spoilers" which I think flashing text so red even a sanders supporter couldn't ignore along with the blaring klaxon, should have been a tiny hint.

I found the pacing to be very off with JJ, but I still enjoyed it. DD is a cut above it, but both certainly beat the other superhero shows currently around by light-years.

So fucking glad you pointed out the fact that DC's teenybopper bullshit shows fucking suck. I mean for fuck's sake, if I were counting every time a mindloess DC fanboy told me about how "Marvelhas the upper hand in the cinemas but DC dominates on the small screen" or any of that bullshit while citing the fucking Flash TV series as an example, I'd already have stormed in to WB's fucking headquarters with an AK in one arm and a pipe-bomb in the other.
