In "Jesus - The Spirit and the Word," Anthony Buzzard is in excellent form as always as he teaches about Christ and how Jesus relates to his people by the spirit of God and by God's word.

Can anyone tell me what happens to our spirit when we die, our body stays in the ground what about the spirit. If the spirit goes to heaven does that mean when Jesus comes back he sends our spirit to earth then raises us up ???

Yes, agreed, however, I can't see simple intellect raising the dead by just speaking. Or healing a man born blind by putting spit and clay in his eyes.

I am curious about how Jesus said that the spirit won’t speak of itself similar to how Jesus himself doesn’t speak of himself. It just seems strange to me that God’s spirit(?) doesn’t speak of itself. If Jesus got his words from God, and the spirit is God’s spirit, how can Jesus say the spirit doesn’t speak of itself?

That is strange in my opinion, too. I am studying the topic of the holy spirit for quite some time now as a unitarian and as someone who is spirit filled (praying for sick people who get healed etc) and I just cannot come to a definite conclusion. The only real solution to the problem of understanding the verse that you show up, when looking at this verse in isolation, would be to say that the holy spirit is another person or some kind of supernatural reality which is revealing things that god or Jesus want to say to us e.g. by means of divine inspiration. In that sense the holy spirit would be like a tunnel of the words of god and/or Jesus and therefore he would not speak from himself. However, that could only be a definite conclusion if we leave out the other verses, e.g. 2. Corinthians 3,17-18. Or Romans 8,9-11 where the Holy Spirit is identified with the Spirit of God and with the Spirit of Messiah. End of verse 10 together with beginning of verse 11 seems to indicate that the Messiah is kind of the Spirit of the Messiah. But then, if the Messiah wants to speak to us, why is Jesus saying that the Spirit of the Messiah is not speaking from himself? I mean Jesus could just speak directly. There is, however, another way of interpreting Romans 8,10 in the sense that Messiah in us simply means that the Messiah isn't literally in us but through the spirit. So through the spirit the Messiah can speak to us and lead us and we can follow him as is he would be here on earth. Yeah as I said I cannot come to a conclusion. The closest that I can come to is this: The spirit is another person and is subject to both, Jesus and god. He is like the arm of both. But this theory is not really fitting to 2. Corinthians 3,17-18.

@@martinmartin6300 YOUR spirit does-NOT and CANNOT speak in-and-of himself simply-because neither your spirit(inspiration) nor your soul(mind) are separate-persons in-and-of themselves, and neither your soul nor your spirit can function at-all without each-other. This clearly-explains John16:13. The SOUL and SPIRIT of God is the IMAGE in-which Mankind was created(Gen.2:7/Isaiah42:1). God the Holy Spirit is the ONE and ONLY Person of God-Himself but with the EMPHASIS on His Spirit(Inspiration), and God The Father is EXACTLY the SAME-PERSON but with the EMPHASIS on His SOUL(Mind). Jesus was conceived by The Holy Spirit which is very-obviously The very Eternal-Spirit of God The Father HIMSELF. (Matt.1:20/Matt.10:20), (1Cor.3:16 / 1Cor.6:19 / 1Cor.6:16) , (Heb.8:10 / Heb.9:14 / Heb.10:15 , 16 ). Jesus does-NOT have 2 Fathers. Amen. ALSO SEE Rom.7:23 / 1Cor.14:14,15 / 1Thess.5:23. / Heb.4:12.

@@martinmartin6300 thank you for the response, and if only we had more Minds on this. I have a couple of theories but I don't hold much faith in them. It could be that this is just basically fancy speak, where we're not supposed to take it so woodenly and literally, so all Jesus means is that the spirit to come is going to testify of him and that we're not supposed to read that much into it. Also that as you said this is his spirit, whether it's his Spirit or whether it is God's spirit empowering him and his Spirit to reach us. Or, as you said, the spirit in john, or perhaps even in the entire Bible, is a separate spirit. Separate from God and Jesus somehow, acting on their orders. I once heard somebody theorize that The Advocate that Jesus was talking about in John was actually a man, like a community leader. I often think of what it would be like to have had been able to be born in the first century to be able to hear these things directly from the apostles, the community and Jesus. But that would have come with a lot of baggage, like social persecution. I suppose we have a duty as Scholars and as Christians to both read each of these documents within their own terms, but then also see if there is harmonization if we also want to view this through the lens of scripture cannot be broken.

@@youngknowledgeseeker I am often times thinking the same: Wouldn't it be great to be able to ask the apostles directly what they meant? But I guess it is as Jesus said in the end of John's gospel: Blessed are those who did nit see but still believe. That seems to be part of it. Be blessed!

If the holy spirit is the spirit of the father (God) and is also the spirit of Jesus, hasn't Jesus thereby assumed the identity of God the father?

Guys I hope you can help me out of my confusion (I hope the holy spirit will). OK let's assume for a moment that Jesus is the spirit himself. Don't you imply at the same time that Jesus is the father because the holy spirit IS god in action, like god himself? E.g. we know that god begot Jesus and in Luke's account we read that power from on high and the holy spirit came over Mary so I guess the holy spirit created Jesus? That would mean that the holy spirit is god himself, but in action as Anthony Buzzard also aknowledges often times. So didn't Anthony accidentially came up with some form of modalism? Also, if Jesus is the holy spirit how does it come that the holy spirit was active in old testament times, also? I really want to understand all of this.

@youngknowledgeseeker
@youngknowledgeseeker Жыл бұрын
Just my guess, the spirit in the Old Testament is God's spirit, or God in his operational power and presence. Whatever that means. Then in the New Testament after the resurrection God gives his spirit to all or many. However with a new caveat, the spirit also has empowered Jesus to be in communion and presence(?) with his people. So it is not that Jesus IS literally God's spirit but that Jesus, via the spirit, is doing things among his people, watching over them, being with them etc. And so we see the spirit being Jesus spirit, but also God's spirit in the New Testament. This is my current theory, I'm open to be incorrect, and I think it's what Anthony would say, or something along those lines.

It's the lack of understanding of literal and figurative language. The same way no one teaches the Holy Spirit is the father of Jesus even though scripture says the spirit came upon Mary.
