Definitely adding an "In memory of.." is better than changing the name of the car like some people below are saying. The car will be a lot of fun and you will goof around with the name and goals etc. You won't want to disrespect her name, so having a memory sticker or something will always honor her. Looks like you already agree since you loved this comment and not the others. Cheers.

The aerodynamics on that thing going 200+mph with half a windshield should be interesting. Might want to swing by the windtunnel with a mock-up before you commit to that design. Centering the driver and having a split intake would be a massive amount of fab work, and running the intake over the roof would likely require setting the jet engine back farther to maintain decently smooth airflow. Leroy had a period where the cage was entirely inadequate and it was pretty sketchy, but I'd have probably done the same thing. Jet cars are in an entirely different league though, do the engineering and do it safely. Also, for the frame and cage, why not design it in CAD and run FEA to know where the weak points actually are and tweak the design? You'd also know exactly how strong it was (assuming your welds are all perfect). I love the 'Merican style, Do It For Dale, measure once cut twice attitude, working man build style you often employ, but when you start getting into jet cars...

FOD is a pretty bad way to go. That's how the last Concorde went down. 8" piece of titanium strap from another plane took out over a hundred people in an instant. Totally preventable. Do yourselves a solid, Garrett, and make sure you have FOD awareness policies in place before you fire up that turbine. A single loose rivet will ruin your day. Edit: FOD: Foreign Object Debris/Foreign Object Damage, for those who don't know the acronym.
@GregoryVeizades

It wasnt exactly FOD that caused the accident. The jet dragster hit something and a piece of that struck her helmet. Really shitty situation.
@noanoxan
@noanoxan 5 жыл бұрын
@@GregoryVeizades The thing that she hit is by definition FOD. Anything that isn't supposed to be where it is, is FOD. I've seen what happens when a tech leaves a testing probe in a box, and I've seen what skin flakes can do to a clean surface moving at 68k rpm. I've seen the defense training videos. All of it is FOD, and all of it is preventable carelessness brought on by laziness.

@@noanoxan I think the point being made here is that FOD is typically a term that is reserved for turbine damage and other engine failure anomalies... The fact that she clipped a timing 'device' and either got hit by that object and that killed her or hitting the wall did... at no point was anything said about the turbine coming apart. More to the point, I don't think they are going to be able to certify that the track has absolutely no loose objects on the surface... And yes while it is possible to get components from the front of the motor, it is much more likely they will come out the sides or the rear due to the nature of the forces involved...

@kleetus92 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Cleetus, I know you're well on the way with the design of the Jet car as evident by this video, but I think you may want to reconsider and or contact the folks at Larson Motorsports for your intake design. We've seen how much power strange aerodynamics robs a vehicle, as proven by Leroy's flying brick power loss numbers. My concern is with you having half a windshield at what will probably be well over 175 mph (since you're there now with Leroy), you are going to have some amazing wind resistance on the left side of your car, which means it's gonna turn left without any driver input. I really don't want to see you or anyone else make a hard hit into the wall for an early error in design, which I'm afraid this is. I too am an electrical engineer with a very strong mechanical background. I'd rather mention it and delay the project than have one of you guys get seriously injured or worse. Kat's accident brings this into focus. I think you need to either put a scoop up to the roof, or, make the windshield 40-20-40, or have a circular cut out in it with a conical taper to the jet intake. That will maintain the aerodynamic drag symmetry of the car, and allow for a balanced wind load.
@admkbldwn
@admkbldwn 5 жыл бұрын
Guys... that asymmetrical windshield/intake idea is, uh, not great. You're going to have all kinds of _really strong_ aerodynamic forces exerted on the car in an imbalanced manner, making the car more unstable than you would want it to be at ~200 mph. I seriously hope you take your time and come up with a nicer solution, otherwise this thing will end up either too unruly to drive to its full potential (aka all kinds of disappointing for the amount of effort you're putting in) or outright dangerous. I'd recommend calling up your wind tunnel buddies again!

Why wouldn't you cut the windshield into 3 pieces? Use the middle section to run straight back to the jet inlet. You would close off the middle 15% or 20% for air inlet and the remainder would be driver and passenger space. Like this... [42.5][15][42.5] Or [40][20][40].

Yeah I kinda wonder what a off center wind drag is going to do to that car at speed... we already know Leroy is worse than trying to fly a brick. That could make the car have a permanent left turn built into it. I am honestly not a fan of the half windshield idea...
@xbris117
@xbris117 5 жыл бұрын
kleetus92 Off center wouldn’t be bad. The airway just has to be smooth and engineered nicely. Take a look at the Gripen or the F-35. Both have two air intakes converging in the middle to feed one engine. You can picture the same thing with the car, except they’re using one side instead of both sides of the windshield, for obvious reasons. Using the middle of the windshield isn’t a bad idea but you can’t just stick a cylinder through the middle of the car and expect it to be efficient. The more surface you have taking in air, the better, that’s why the engine they have and all the ones they saw have a bell/funnel shape to the intake, because you don’t want the air being stagnant. I picture what actually ends up being in the car sort of like the shape of a snail horn, obviously without the twist. A box with a wire screen (because you don’t want anything like tire fragments getting sucked in) that flows through a narrowing tunnel that ends at the diameter of the turbines. This narrowing will also speed up the air and compress it giving you the most efficiency. They may want to even bring the bottom edge of what ever they build out to the front of the hood, because the angle on that Camino windshield is going to do nothing for aerodynamics, which they will absolutely have to factor in because not doing so means the engine will starve.

Cut center of the roof and make something like a transition tunnel that comes down kinda splits the driver and passenger apart but make it come down all the way gradually steps down to the bottom back windshield seal. Pretty much a big slid on the roof. So u can keep windshield factory.

Cleetus, after Mullet is complete you should submit the design to hot wheels headquarters in sure they would love to have a car modeled after him. Also, more marketing opportunity (hot wheels cleetus mcfarland edition, etc). Love your videos, keep on doing it for Dale!

Something you need to take inconsideration if a turbine compressor blade lets loose at full rpm they tend to exit the engine at 45 degree forward angles (turbine blades exit aft at 45 degree angles) witch is right through the drivers seat with this setup. Angled armored plating (AR500 or Kevlar) behind the drivers seat might be a good idea. I have seen the damage a compressor blade exiting a JT8-15 and a Allison 250-C20B has done, it ain't pretty. Be as safe as you can and do it for Dale.

Why not build an intake scoop that goes over the top of the car? I realize it'd be thin, but if you made it as wide as the roof, it'd probably more than make up for the difference in area.

My idea for the jet intake would to be have an s-duct routed above the roof of the car, so the jet would sit in the back but would have a duct routed above the front roof to suck in air from up there and route it back, similar to how planes like the L1011 tristar had a third jet engine in the tail but had an air intake on top of the fuselage. The cirrus vision jet also has something similar. You’d keep your passenger seat too and have a full windshield However I guess it’s too late to change it now, and besides this way will be more efficient to build than designing an entire engine intake duct.
@timmanley3734
@timmanley3734 5 жыл бұрын
I worked on the L-1011 and the B727-200 the S duct could be applied here but you would have to cut into the roof and probably have the cage running through the duct. If you ran the duct across the full roof and angled down though the roof just behind the drivers head I think it would work. You would have to do some math to figure the cfm airflow you need to figure out the height the inlet across the roof.
@thebanksfilms4426
@thebanksfilms4426 5 жыл бұрын
Not trying to be a smart ass here as you seem to know somewhat of airflow, and turbo fans, but doesn’t the jet need clean straight air? Would a duct disrupt the flow of smooth air and not be as efficient?
@timmanley3734
@timmanley3734 5 жыл бұрын
Shooting for maximum efficiency you might lose a tiny bit. As long the duct is big enough to handle the airflow without being a restriction plus as you start moving you should get some ram air effect. I think it would be a minor lose. The lose on the S-Duct on the Boeing 727 and the L-1011 was a couple percent and the inlet of duct vs the engine was was not a hole lot bigger, it had to have negative pressure in it on takeoff power.

What we would do back in the day's with are mini trucks and El Co's. Was use Limo window kits. That way the back window can be lowered or raised. Maybe they can do a split window actuator that way you can raise or lower ether side. Not sure of FL Law but if front window required by DOT. Then maybe they can fabrcate a window that drops down into the front cowl. Just throwing some ideals out there😝

That design is still considered a single frame rail car, double frame rail cars have the 2nd frame rail on top of the inner frame rail you are adding in the cab. Also 25.3 is chromoly only, which means those mild steel OEM frame rails will have to go in order to meet the SFI spec.

With your head so close to the air intake of the jet , your will be subjecting your ears to irreparable damage from the noise of the air getting sucked by and earplugs won’t help much inside your helmet. Even if nothing happens , you might begin to regret this build because the noise will be unbearable. No other jet vehicle in history has been built with the driver so close to the intake
