LYRICS
You took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather
Well in case you failed to notice
In case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you
This is me down on my knees, and
These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar
You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line, I must have gone off track with you
Excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn
Somebody more like myself
These foolish games are tearing me
You're tearing me, you're tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
And you took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that

Funny that when you're a kid, you never imagine yourself getting old, or that the world as you know it will change drastically. All unimaginable things when we're young and careless. Fast forward 25 years and you lost touch with your childhood friends, working an average job, often reminiscing of the past. God damn did we ever take these times for granted. It's almost humbling in a weird twisted way. What a song. What an era. What a time that was. Amazing. Cheers to anyone that knows what I'm sayin'.

Or a one-sided verbally and emotionally abusive relationship. I think, believe and feel empathetically in my soul due to personal ongoing abuse that I am enduring, is what 💎 Jewel meant by this lyric. Similarly, it didn't start out this bad but now the evil devolution is killing her soul.

This song Moves Me Much Furthur than anyone, it’s a Message to Me, for You see Jewel is My Biological Child long story short Her mother was my first love September 1,1973 in Toronto Canada and Atz Kilcher told me His Name was Otto Carroll and Lanedra Carroll was his Sister and he Gave Me his Sister’s Hand in Marriage because I had a Draft Card for the Vietnam War. When they went home to Alaska Lanedra refused to write down her address for me telling me I had to write to her or I’ll never hear from her again and in my failed attempts to go from Western NY to Alaska to See Lanedra Christmas 1973 My Family had me put in Dr’s Care and after I heard a whisper that the girl in Alaska had a daughter and named her Jewel my family returned me to Dr’s who gave me Lithium and Electric Shock Treatments spring of 1974 and I woke up out of a Drug induced insanity August 25,1974 after I won my third Special Olympic Medal and I’m StrangerBlue in Jewel’s Song Enter from the East

@Thomas Hurley That's an absolutely horrible thing to say! I'm just gonna take a wild guess that you are human and not perfect either. Those "freaks" are just trying to be comfortable enough in their own skin to make their way through this shit show called life however they can just like the rest of us. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder so just cause the "freaks" aren't "cute chicks" for you to gawk at doesn't mean someone doesn't think they're beautiful for who they are inside and out. You are entitled to your opinion but did your mother forget to teach you that if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all? The way people treat each other so poorly and judge each other for things that are frankly none of their business anyhow is a way bigger problem in this day and age than trans people or those struggling with their gender or sexuality.

@@bigcity420 No, she was homeless for about year, after she got kicked out of the residence where she stayed, then she decided to live in her car while saving money to rent a new department, but then she went down with kidney decease and got fired for her consequent absence at work, that's when she found herself without any money and health insurance to the extent she nearly died of infection in the parking lot of a hospital because they wouldn't admit her because of that, but for a kind doctor spotting her lying on the floor and giving her the treatment she needed, she would have probably died. She also felt compelled to shoplift food in order to survive for a while, so yes, she was indeed homeless once. And Oh! I was born in the early 90s and I have to say that I miss hearing songs like this one. Jewel has always been one of my favorite singers. She is a genuine artist, who writes and sings songs about GENUINE human emotion, unlike so many of those meaningless, hip-shaking songs we hear today but still call "music". One of the sad things about young people today (not to mention the generations still to come) is many of them don't even know what REAL MUSIC is all about. I've seen it in my own friends. They only want that loud, feel-good sound that makes them turn up their car stereos until the speakers burst. All they've ever heard is the hip-shaking, booty-bouncing, foot stomping nonsense they hear in clubs and on the radio. And you know what's even sadder than that? Most of the people singing those songs all sound very much alike! Honestly, it is hard to tell many of them apart when you listen to them. Where is that diversity in music we used to love so much?

all generations say that about the current generations. i was born in early 80's and i think modern music is crap. my parents said that about music i liked. i'm sure my grandparents thought the beatles were a loud racket and not music. truth be told, real music is from mozart, beethoven, strauss, vivaldi etc... i listen to them and realise anything else is just not music. however, jewel and others like her are actual modern musicians. in my opinion anyway.

sultanabran1 I think your right but I like all sort of music from classic to rock ,pop and rap... I think because music these days has so much money in the industry... it's all about fake artists and musician... Song are written for artists because they can sing, lip sinking at concerts, silly song with outrageous video clips that make songs popular and i tunes where 1 hit wonders can make a fortune... Critics didn't know how to rate the music from the 90's good or bad it doesn't matter because it was the last decade before the internet changed everything... Turning pop to top channel v use to play all types of music and so did many others underground, hits and lost musician now it all about the top 40 and that's every channel just about.. half the band's I listen to I can not found on i tunes

This is by far one of my favorite rainy day songs of all time. It reminds me of being 13 in my room, listening to it when I was still living at home in New Orleans with the rain, just pouring down outside my window and all my candles in my room lit, living at my grandparents house❤❤❤ my grandparents have been gone for a long time now and there’s not a day goes by that I don’t miss them and miss living with them. Same with my mom. I went from having this beautiful close family my entire life to my entire family being gone in the drop of a hat.😢 and now it’s just me and my sister. Which is kind of sad when you consider the fact that I’m only 38 and my sister is only 28. Our parents passed away in 2010 and our grandparents passed away in 2007 and everybody else in between all from different forms of cancer. If anybody ever sees this comment, please keep your families close because you never know when they can be gone.

Back when I was in high school and this song came out, there was a boy that literally was all the characteristics that the song describes. And I was head over heels, completely and madly in love with him. But that love especially at a young age, brought so much pain. Whenever I hear this song I think of him and I think of that very bittersweet young love that I had. You always love your first love, right? But this song reminds me of the good and the bad of that time. I absolutely love this song and I love Jewel's music but there is a stinger of pain that comes along with this one --- even 23 yrs later.

Same here. First time I heard it was in my loaded down piece of crap car, driving away from boyfriends house after saying goodbye for good and heading off for college. I was balling my eyes out as it was, but this song really hit home. Fast forward 23 years and 2 divorces between us, we met for dinner.

You took your coat off Stood in the rain You're always crazy like that And I watched from my window Always felt I was outside... Looking in on you You're always the mysterious one with... Dark eyes and careless hair, you were... Fashionably sensitive, but too cool to care You stood in my doorway with nothing to say Besides some comment... on the weather In case you failed to notice In case you failed to see This is my heart... Bleeding before you, this is me down on my knees, these Foolish games are... Tearing me apart And your... Thoughtless words are breaking my heart You're breaking my heart You're always brilliant... in the morning Smoking your cigarettes And talking... over coffee Your philosophies on art Baroque moved you, you loved Mozart And you'd speak of your loved ones As I clumsily strummed my guitar Excuse me... Think I've mistaken you for... somebody else Somebody who gave a damn Somebody more like myself! These... Foolish games are... Tearing me You're tearing me You're tearing me apart! And your...
